Water chemistry and catchment data collected from lakes and streams in South Greenland in August 2022
This dataset contains measurements of physico-chemical parameters, biofilm, and watershed characteristics from subarctic lakes and streams in the Narsaq area, Greenland, collected in August 2022. Water samples were collected and analyzed for temperature, conductivity, alkalinity, and nutrient concentrations. Biofilm samples were collected from stones, with chlorophyll a (Chl a), ash-free dry weight (AFDW), and carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratios measured. Algal pigments were analyzed using HPLC for taxonomic composition. Watershed delineation was performed using a digital elevation model (DEM), and vegetation greenness was quantified via the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. This dataset contributes to understanding the environmental drivers of biofilm biomass and community composition in Arctic freshwater ecosystems
Physical oceanography during RV METEOR cruise M180
The CTD data on cruise M180 contain oceaninc measurements of temperature, salinity, and pressure at 67 stations. The data were collected with the research vessel Meteor. Region: South Atlantic, 45°W-9°E, 32°S-38°S; Ports: Montevideo - Cape Town; Date: February 23 - April 13, 2022. The data where collected by a CTD device of type SBE 9. Due to technical problems, two different CTDs were operated on this cruise: The ship's CTD and the CTD system from the university of Bremen. In all cases, the sampling frequency was 24 Hz, and the raw data were then interpolated on 1 dbar intervals. Due to a failure of the salinometer, no salinity samples could be analysed for the calibration of the conductivity sensors. A comparison between the CTD systems and a previous cruise in the same area (MSM60) revealed good agreement for the ship's conductivity sensors and a correction of +0.005 ms/cm in conductivity for the sensor from the university of Bremen. With this correction, all CTD salinity data agree close to the bottom, i.e. in the Antarctic Bottom Water, within 0.001 psu. The accuracy of the calibrated CTD measurements is: 1 dbar for pressure, 0.002 °C for temperature, 0.003 psu for salinity
δ Deuterium leaf wax isotopes from sediment core of Lake Alchichica in Mexico
The isotope analyses were performed on subsamples from a 57-cm-long sediment core retrieved from Lake Alchichica (19° 24' 38 N, 97° 24' 14 W, 2322 masl) at a water depth of ~ 60 m using a Uwitec® coring device equipped with a 9-cm coring tube. n-alkanes were extracted from 20 dried samples (1.3–2.8 g) using DCM:MeOH (9:1) in a DIONEX ASE-200 at 100°C and 1000 psi for 5 minutes, repeated thrice, with squalane as an internal standard. Lipid extracts were concentrated under N₂, treated with activated copper to remove sulfur, and saponified with 6% KOH in MeOH at 80°C for 2 hours. Hydrocarbons, ketones, and alcohols were extracted with hexane, and non-polar hydrocarbons were isolated using silica gel and silver nitrate-silica columns. Saturated fractions were analyzed by GC/FID at MARUM, University of Bremen, with retention time comparison for compound identification and <5% quantification precision
Diatom bound nitrogen isotopes of sediment core PS69/899-2
Diatom-bound nitrogen isotopes (d15N-db) from sediment cores PS69/899-2, located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, covering the past 150,000 years, based on the age model described in Fripiat et al. (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.983936). This proxy reflects past variations in the degree of nitrate consumption in surface waters of the Southern Ocean
Timeseries of binned benthic stable carbon isotope from ODP Site 162-982,130-807 and IODP Site 306-U1313
Age model of sediment core PS67/197-1
Age model of PS67/197-1 28 – 60 ka BP. Model is based on correlating magnetic susceptibility to δ18O of EDML and paleomagnetic measurements to the Black Sea core stack of Liu et al. (2020). The model is an update of the one of Xiao et al. (2016)
A Bayesian Network risk model for assessing oil spill recovery effectiveness in the ice-covered
A Bayesian Network (BN) model for assessing oil spill recovery effectiveness, focusing on mechanical recovery is presented. It aims to generate holistic understanding and insights about the oil spill-to-recovery phase, and to estimate oil recovery effectiveness in representative winter conditions. The model is built with GeNIE
Shelf ice and sea bed videos of the Remotely Operated Vehicle "Ocean Modules V8 Sii" from the continental shelf of the Weddell Sea during Polarstern cruise PS111
The objectives of this study were (i) to repeat the surveys carried out in earlier expeditions to the Weddell Sea to assess the dynamics of Antarctic benthic communities, and (ii) to explore the shelf ice "hanging gardens" discovered in Drescher Inlet in other parts of the Weddell Sea in relation to potential factors governing the "seeding" of the shelf-ice with benthic organisms (e.g. rising platelet ice) and food supply (e.g. tidal currents)
