Visual core description of IODP Hole 386-M0088A
Collection of visual core description (VCD) sheets (hand drawn originals and digital representations) and lithologic composite plots from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). VCD was performed on unsampled archive halves of split cores, directly after linescan imaging, during the onshore phase of expedition 386, which took place between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15 onboard D/V Chikyu. The lithology of each core section is represented on the hand drawn VCDs by graphic patterns next to the X-ray CT image of the archive-half core section. Further, a wide variety of features that characterize the sediment are indicated in additional columns. The information from the hand-drawn VCD sheets was then transferred into the Drilling Information System database (s. also datasets "Description of lithologic section units of IODP Hole 386-M0088A"), from where it could be accessed semi-automated to produce digital lithologic columns and composite plots using Strater (Golden Software).

The role of the Port of Hamburg for biodiversity: 7452 floristic records for the survey sites (2018-2021)
The BMDV network of experts commissioned a comprehensive terrestrial biodiversity assessment of the Hamburg harbor area, enlisting local experts to conduct the surveys. This research focused on evaluating the harbor's ecological significance for both indigenous and non-native species. Surveys were conducted between 2018 and 2021. The study employed standardized methodologies for floristic mapping and habitat classification, ensuring consistency with established protocols of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG). For this study, habitat type data from previous surveys (1983, 2005) could be mobilized, digitized and included in the analysis. Floristic mapping adhered to the city state's survey methods and metadata standards, which allowed comparisons with available data from 1975 onwards. Methodological details pertaining to the collection of zoological data are available in the accompanying publication and followed established standards for each taxonomic group (Coleoptera, Aculeata, Formicidae, Araneae, Opiliones, Culicidae). The data here contains 7452 floristic records for the respective survey sites, recorded 2018-2019. Coordinates were recorded as centroids in ETRS89 / UTM zone 32N (EPSG 25832) and are stored in WGS84 (EPSG 4326, decimal degrees)
Smear slide microscopy images of IODP Hole 386-M0090B
Collection of smear slide microscopy images from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). The offshore phase of this expedition took place between 2021-04-13 and 2021-06-01 onboard Japanese R/V Kaimei from and to Yokosuka, Japan. This was followed by an onshore phase onboard D/V Chikyu between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15. During the offshore phase, smear slides were prepared from paleontology samples collected with a tip-cut syringe from section ends every 5 m. During the onshore phase, smear slides samples were collected every 2 m to complement visual core description observations and identify the composition of fine-grained sediment. The smear slides were prepared by putting a small amount of sediment on a glass slide mixed with distilled water. The slide was subsequently evaporated on a hot plate, and the dried sample was mounted in Norland Optical Adhesive 61 using ultraviolet light. Sediment grain size and composition were examined under a polarized light petrographic microscope (Zeiss Axio Imager A1m POL-1) with an ocular micrometer. With a few exceptions, one photo with open and one with crossed nicol prisms was taken of each slide.

Moisture and density (MAD) from IODP Hole 386-M0089B
Moisture and density (MAD) data from discrete samples from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). During the onshore phase of expedition 386, which took place between 2022-02-14 – 2022-03-15 onboard D/V Chikyu, discrete samples for MAD measurements (bulk density, dry density, grain density, water content, porosity, and void ratio) were taken from the work halves using 10 cubic centimetre syringes at an approx. down-core resolution of every 2 meters. Sampling depths were adapted and slightly modified for layers of special interest, such as tephras. Samples were processed and measured directly after sampling onboard Chikyu. For the measurements themselves samples were transferred to glass beakers of known weight and volume.

X-ray CT images of IODP Hole 386-M0081C
Collection of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images from the above given hole of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 386 (Japan Trench Paleoseismology). X-ray CT scanning was performed on whole-round sections on board D/V Chikyu in July 2021, after the offshore phase and prior to the onshore phase, using a Discovery CT 750HD (GE Medical Systems) that produces 32 0.625 mm thick slice images every 0.4 s. Data generated for each core consist of core-axis-normal planes of X-ray attenuation values that are 512 × 512 pixels in size. Data were stored on the server as DICOM formatted files. The DICOM files were restructured to create 3-D images for further investigation. For publication purposes JPG files of each scanned section were produced imaging the plane representative of the split core surface.

Vibracores collected in Quarantine Bay, Louisiana, United States of America
This dataset contains vibracore samples collected in Quarantine Bay, located in southeastern Louisiana, USA, on the east side of the lower Mississippi River. Sampling was conducted on 12 and 13 June 2023. The primary objective was to investigate the geology of Quarantine Bay, which serves as the receiving basin for Neptune Pass—the largest new distributary of the Mississippi River. Sediment cores were collected using a vibracorer, a standard technique employed in the Mississippi River Delta and other coastal environments. The coring apparatus utilized aluminum pipes with a diameter of 7.6 cm. Core compaction was assessed during collection by comparing the depth of sediment recovered in the barrel to water depth measurements taken via tape measure and/or hand ruler. The spatial extent of the study area ranges from 29.432624°N to 29.375139°N latitude and from -89.522453°W to -89.458961°W longitude. Specific core locations are provided in the associated data table
