Two types of definiteness
No full textThe question of how to formally represent definites as a class of referential expressions has been a longstanding area of inquiry in linguistic research (Hawkins 1978; Heim 1982). This talk contributes to this research by analyzing elicitation data on definite expressions from four diaspora (Indianapolis) speakers of Hakha Lai, a South Central (formerly Kuki-Chin) Tibeto-Burman language (Chin State, Burma). While descriptive accounts of definiteness marking in Lai exist (Barnes 1998; Baclawski 2013), this talk contributes novel data as well as a finegrained syntactic analysis of referential expressions in Hakha Lai and contributes more generally to ongoing research on the role of indices and their status as syntactic objects
Interaction between Raphidiopsis raciborskii and rare bacterial species revealed by dilution-to-extinction experiments
No full textInteractions between heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria regulate the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems and are thus crucial for the prediction and management of cyanobacterial blooms in relation to water security.
Currently, abundant bacterial species are of primary concern, while the role of more diverse and copious rare species remains largely unknown.
Using a dilution-to-extinction approach, rare bacterial species from reservoir water were co-cultured with the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii in the lab to explore their interactions by using Phyto-PAM and 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing.
We found that a <= 1000-fold bacterial dilution led to bacteria control of the growth and photosynthesis of R. raciborskii.
Moreover, the bacterial community compositions in the low-dilution groups were clearly diverged from the highdilution groups. Importantly, rare species changed dramatically in the low-dilution groups, resulting in lower phylogenetic diversity and narrower niche width. The network complexity and compositional stability of bacterial communities decreased in the low-dilution groups.
Collectively, our results suggest that rare bacterial species inhibit R. raciborskii growth and photosynthesis through microbial interactions mediated by species coexistence and interaction mechanisms.
Our study provides new knowledge of the ecological role of rare bacteria and offers new perspectives for understanding the outbreak and regression of R. raciborskii blooms
Reduplicated distributivity in Mandinka
No full textReduplication is commonly exhibited by markers of distributivity. Although distributivity markers can either mark the key (as determiner each does, as in each child saw a lion) or the share (as with adnominal each, as in the boys saw a lion each), it has been conjectured that distributivity markers formed through reduplication are always markers of the share, rather than the key. Here we discuss a case that challenges but ultimately vindicates this conjecture. In Mandinka (spoken in Senegambia), reduplicating a nominal with interposition of the morpheme -woo- gives rise to a distributive reading. We investigated the semantics of the X-woo-X construction and found that it behaves as a key-marker, but also as a share-marker. We take these findings to support an analysis on which X-woo-X signals ‘simultaneous distributivity’, simultaneously marking both key and share
In search of exclusive plural
No full textThere is an ongoing debate in the literature whether there is a language with the exclusive plural only, i.e., in which plural invariably gives rise to the more-than-one meaning both in upward and downward entailing contexts. I extend the discussion on the exclusive vs. inclusive plural in a novel way to the interpretation of the verbal plural, so-called pluractionals. In particular, I examine the meaning of plural and pluractionals in Hausa, a language for which it has been claimed in the previous literature that it has the exclusive plural only, both in the nominal and verbal domain (see e.g., Součková and Buba 2008, Součková 2011, Zimmermann 2021). The outcome of the empirical elicitation studies suggests that the inclusive interpretation in Hausa is available in both domains. Thus the data from Hausa inform an empirically adequate theory of plural across domains and languages

Interprofessionelles Dysphagiemanagement in Pflegeeinrichtungen
No full textMehr als 50 % der Bewohner:innen stationärer Pflegeeinrichtungen weisen eine Dysphagie auf. Die Aspirationspneumonie als mögliche Folge stellt dabei eine vitale Bedrohung dar. Ein interprofessionelles Dysphagiemanagement von Logopädie und Pflege kann helfen, das erhöhte Risiko einer Aspiration zu minimieren. Eine strukturierte Empfehlung zur Aspirationsprophylaxe fehlt in Deutschland für den Bereich stationärer Langzeitpflege. Ziel dieser Studie war die Entwicklung und Evaluation einer evidenzbasierten, individualisierbaren Handlungsempfehlung für die orale Nahrungsaufnahme bei neurogener, oropharyngealer Dysphagie.
Basierend auf einem Literaturreview wurden 18 internationale Studien analysiert, um adaptive und kompensatorische Maßnahmen zur Reduktion des Aspirationsrisikos zu identifizieren. Die entstandene Empfehlung wurde in einer Online-Befragung mit 52 Expert:innen aus stationären Pflegeeinrichtungen in Deutschland evaluiert, wobei die Unterschiede in der Berufserfahrung berücksichtigt wurden. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass sich der Großteil der Befragten dem Risiko einer Aspirationspneumonie bewusst ist, wobei Berufseinsteiger:innen im Umgang mit Dysphagien häufiger Unsicherheiten angaben. Mit der entwickelten Handlungsempfehlung würden sich alle Befragten im Dysphagiemanagement sicherer fühlen. Die Empfehlung ermöglicht ein strukturiertes, individualisierbares Vorgehen vor, während und nach der Nahrungsaufnahme. Trotz Barrieren wie Personal- und Zeitmangel konnten sich etwa 90 % der Proband:innen vorstellen, die Empfehlung einzusetzen.
Die entwickelte Handlungsempfehlung hat das Potenzial, die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Logopädie und Pflege im Dysphagiemanagement zu stärken und Pflegenden Sicherheit bei der Aspirationsprophylaxe zu vermitteln. Die konsequente Aspirationsprophylaxe durch Einsatz der Empfehlung könnte das Mortalitätsrisiko bei neurogener Dysphagie senken und das Dysphagiemanagement für Bewohner:innen stationärer Pflegeeinrichtungen verbessern. Um die Handlungsempfehlung weiter zu evaluieren, wäre eine empirische Untersuchung zur Umsetzbarkeit im stationären Pflegealltag empfehlenswert
