Communication Through Interpreters : Deaf Academics’ Wishes and Preferences in Collaboration with Sign Language Interpreters in the Workplace.
This study investigates what deaf professionals with an academic degree value in their collaboration with interpreters between spoken Swedish and Swedish Sign Language in the workplace. Through semi-structured digital interviews with five participants and an inductive thematic analysis, key themes such as competence, shared responsibility, the interpreter’s approach, and perceived challenges were identified. The results show that effective interpretation in the workplace requires more than accurate linguistic rendering—continuity, opportunities for preparation, subject matter knowledge, and close interaction are essential. The interpreter is seen as an active participant in communication, and relationships characterized by trust, respect, and security are central to enabling participation. Particular emphasis is placed on the interpreter’s ability to adapt language, pace, and expression to the context, as well as to include informal conversations in the workplace’s social environment. The study also highlights the importance of organizational structures that create conditions for continuity and access to qualified interpreters. The findings can contribute to the development of interpreting services and enhance the quality of interpreter-mediated communication in the workplace
Visual strategies in biblical narratives : A transmedial investigation of Netherlandish carved altarpieces
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse how the biblical stories are narrated through the diverse media of the Netherlandish carved altarpieces. It investigates the transmedial narrativity of the altarpieces currently in Sweden. The narrativity is analysed as a visual property that the scenes possess, which generates a narrative interpretation by encouraging a perceived sense of motion or action. The dissertation asks what the narratological qualities of the altarpieces are in relation to temporality, spatiality, and the characterisation of figures, and whether these qualities were adapted from the cultural context of the early 16th-century Low Countries. In three empirical chapters the dissertation combines close narratological analyses with contextual studies to highlight the multiplicity of artistic expression in the 16th century. The second chapter analyses the narrative ordering of the scenes of the altarpieces, and whether these narrative sequences intersect and act in dialogue. Because the altarpieces had the possibility to display such multiplicity of scenes, they can accommodate a variety of theological narratives, such as a biblical chronological series of events, but also thematic and typological narratives. The narrative sequences, as well as the ordering of multiple narratives, create a narrative reading order through which the scenes are “read” and interpreted in relation to each other. The spatial structures of the altarpieces are studied in the third chapter: the liminal spaces of the frame as well as the constructed habitable spaces for the figures in the scenes. The settings of the scenes form the locations of the narrated events in the shape of built architectural structures, landscapes or interiors, and particular to the Netherlandish altarpieces is a hybridisation of historicising and contemporary architectual elements or novel fantastical designs. The spatial environment for the characters in the scenes thus echoes the built environment of the Early Renaissance of the Low Countries, but also reflects established ideas of history and time. The setting contributes to a spatial depth in the scenes, and situates the story for the contemporary 16th century viewer. The fourth chapter studies the dress of the characters, as well as the displays of emotion and body language. In a narrative story the appearance and features are vital for the interpretation of a character, as clothing and jewellery in particular act as indicators of social status or morality. Like the architecture of the setting, the dress of the charcters displays an eclectic diversity of contemporary dress and imagined historicising dress. Likewise, gestures can reflect established patterns and known body language in Netherlandish or Northern European society, which are not necessarily related to traditional Christian iconography
Herring in a changing environment : Trophic interactions, growth, and contaminant burden
The Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) is an ecologically and economically important species of forage fish that plays a central role in the Baltic Sea food web. While elevated concentrations of contaminants within biota have been well documented in this historically polluted sea area, the effects that ecosystem changes such as eutrophication, climate-driven shifts in food web structure, and changes in growth have on contaminant burden remain poorly understood. This thesis investigates the complex effects of changing trophic interactions (Studies I, II, & III) and growth (Study III) on contaminant burden in herring, while providing updated tools to investigate similar questions in the future (Study IV). Study I showed that concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (PCBs and PCDD/Fs) and heavy metals (Hg) in herring are best explained by ecological and trophic changes, rather than decreased emissions. Higher cyanobacterial bloom intensity was associated with decreases in contaminant concentrations. Study II further investigated the relationship between herring and cyanobacteria by using compound specific isotope analysis in amino acids to quantify the amount of diazotrophic-N fixed by cyanobacteria present in juvenile herring over a growth season. Results showed that at peak levels, more than 30% of N in juvenile herring was fixed by cyanobacteria, with levels correlated to cyanobacterial biovolume in the water. Study III analyzed concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in the same juvenile herring used in study II and investigated the variables driving differences in concentrations. It was observed that contaminant concentration significantly decreased with fish size, with the smallest juveniles having higher contaminant concentrations than adults. General additive models showed that growth rate, assessed from daily growth rings in otoliths, was the variable most responsible for changes in contaminant concentration, with a higher growth rate leading to lower contaminant concentrations. These three studies show that cyanobacteria blooms in the Baltic have possible positive effects including providing N to the production of fish resources thereby potentially improving growth conditions and reducing contaminants through somatic growth dilution. Since non-lethal estimates of in-situ growth rates are difficult, we further developed a bioenergetic model for juvenile herring using ambient zooplankton densities and a functional consumption response, and incorporated water temperature and light period to predict growth (Study IV). The model was shown to better predict natural growth than previous models. The work in this thesis shows that ecosystem changes thought to be detrimental, such as increased cyanobacterial blooms, can have interactions with contaminant burden that are beneficial (Studies I & II), while showing that if the growth of juvenile herring can be improved, contaminant burden can be decreased (Study III). Lastly, a new mathematical method to calculate the important metric of growth rate in juvenile herring is presented, which will allow for future predictions of herring growth in a warming Baltic Sea (Study IV). In conclusion, all four studies support the need to contemplate potential ecological synergies and linkages when managing a rapidly changing system, in order to minimize the potential harmful effects of changes such as eutrophication, without compromising the positive impact on contaminant concentrations in fish
Configurations, dynamics, and temporality. : Exploring the social networks of students and their relevance for successful transitions into higher education
This study examines social networks' role in high-achieving students' transitions from upper secondary school to higher education. A specific focus is on the configuration of their social network, its' stability over time, and how the students experience the nature of the relationships in the network. The case study is based on three student cases selected from a pool of 52 students, and the data includes three waves of interviews with students over two years, interviews with a significant other to the students, and a subjective mapping of their social network. Analytical tools are the concepts of cultural and social capital and weak and strong ties. The study shows how social and cultural capital works within a social network, experienced from the students’ perspectives. In addition, we conclude that the transition process is fragile for students with low cultural capital regarding network configurations, significantly when changing fields of interest from upper secondary to tertiary education. Here, the importance of having weak ties is illustrated in terms of the need for field-specific influx for a bridging support role in the transition. The active involvement and reciprocal nature of the relationships are vital, and the strength of the network depends on whether it pertains over time. The results have implications for practice due to the emerging interrupted transitions to higher education and how to support students in their apparent situations, which are characterised as being in a state of limbo with no clear resolution
Divorce Law Reform, Family Stability, and Children's Long-Term Outcomes
While divorce laws are known to influence family behavior, empirical evidence of their effects on children remains scarce. I shed more light on this by evaluating a 6-month parental reconsideration period for divorce, which was implemented during the Swedish divorce law reform of 1974. I exploit quasi-experimental policy variation and population-wide register data on 1.17 million Swedish children born 1952–1964 to evaluate the implications of family stability on children’s long-term human capital outcomes. I find that families with more years of exposure to this divorce restriction are 18.8% less likely to divorce. The children with greater exposure are also 1.8% more likely to graduate from upper secondary school and exhibit higher rates of marriage and lower rates of divorce in adulthood. The findings highlight a trade-off between parental freedom of choice related to divorce and externalities on children’s outcomes

The Work Practice of Platform-Mediated Food Delivery : An Ethnographic Study of Bridging Algorithmic Workflows and Situated Action
The thesis examines the work practice of platform-mediated food delivery. Combining ethnographic studies in India and Sweden, it highlights the friction between the platform’s representation of work and the ground realities shaping workers’ situated actions, including their economic concerns. The thesis contributes to the fields of Human-Computer Interaction and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, with an emphasis on worker-centered design and the critical role of human labor in gig work
