    Bildens och stenens relation : En undersökning av variationen i bildmotiv hos Gotlands stora och små bildstenar

    This essay sought to analyse the variation in picture motifs and size between of the big and small picture stones of the island of Gotland. This was done to better understand the relation between the pictures and the stone of both types of picture stones and if the relation was different for each type. The analysis used three theoretical frameworks, the Pictorial turn, the Mediality of the Picture and the Technology of Enchantment. The stones were categorised based on three aspects. The first analysed the number of picture fields on the small and big stones, the second analysed the distribution of six selected themes and the third analysed the figures, both within the selected themes and figures not included in them. The results pointed to that the people that created the picture stones wanted to use up as much space on the stones as possible. Because the big stones had more space than the small stones the creators filled out the space by telling a more detailed story and in doing so added more pictures on the big stones. This also served the purpose of getting people’s attention which in turn allowed for the story on the picture stones to be told. Therefore, the relation between stone and pictures was a sort of cooperation, which was stronger with the big picture stones because of their greater sizes, number of picture fields, number of pictures and the skill needed to make them.

    This thesis examines the extent to which national gender equality policy is integrated into Swedish municipal budget documents and explores political and institutional factors that help explain variation between municipalities. The study is based on an original, author-constructed dataset consisting of 50 Swedish municipal budgets, amounting to approximately 3220 pages of text. All documents were manually coded by the author using a self-developed and theory-informed coding scheme and coding manual, specifically designed for this study. The findings show that while gender equality is frequently acknowledged at a rhetoric level, it is far less often translated into concrete measures or targeted resource allocations. Variation between municipalities is systematically related to differences in institutional capacity and political context, indicating that both administrative and political factors shape the local implementation of national gender equality policy. By highlighting the gap between normative commitments and practical implementation, the study contributes to research on gender equality policy and local governance, while it underscores the importance of municipal budgets as a key arena for understanding the actual steering capacity of gender equality policy in the local context

    Local struggles rooted in place: Exploring the role of place-based arguments in community advocacy for ecosystem conservation in Lima, Peru

    Urban ecosystems in rapidly growing cities face serious pressures from land use change, socio-economic inequality and climate impacts. In Lima, community-based organisations (CBOs) have emerged as key actors in advocating for parks and lomas (fog oases) conservation. This thesis investigates how CBOs use place-based arguments (PBAs) in their advocacy processes, how PBAs contribute to perceived policy outcomes, and how PBAs are used differently in the two ecosystem types. By integrating the concepts of sense of place and policy advocacy, and using the Narrative Policy Framework, the study examines the interplay between place attachment and meanings, and strategic advocacy in the context of environmental stewardship. Based on 20 in-depth interviews with members of ten CBOs, findings show that PBAs are strategically adapted to the target audience. Coalition building is done by using PBAs in mainly ecological, social and emotional narratives, while legal narratives become more prominent when engaging with decision makers. PBAs related to lomas focused on biodiversity, species and legal mechanisms, while for parks, they covered green areas features and benefits, mixing with non-PBAs on the right to public spaces and to a healthy environment. While PBAs contributed to policy outcomes by consolidating advocacy coalitions and promoting public support through the media, other factors, such as political windows of opportunity, were decisive. These findings provide insights into how connections to place are intertwined with and nurture advocacy narratives, motivate urban stewardship and provide legitimacy to local actors in governance processes, highlighting the value of recognising place-based narratives as part of inclusive governance strategies for urban nature in the Global South

    Stakeholders’ opportunities and attempts to influence drug policy in Sweden

    Background: Drug policy is a polarized and value-laden policy area with divergent interests of stakeholders. Through a Swedish case study, this article examines stakeholders’ strategies to influence drug policy, and perceptions of their own and others’ opportunities to influence drug policy—a topic that has not been systematically analyzed previously. Methods: The analysis of 38 semi-structured key informant interviews with stakeholders within the national-level drug policy field drew on concepts from research on political access and influence strategies. Results: Most stakeholders used both ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ strategies when trying to influence drug policy. The majority perceived having opportunities to influence but they agreed that the voices of people who use drugs (PWUD) and significant others remained unheard. Stakeholders’ power and interest varied within the drug policy field, as did their resources, often serving as a doorway to political arenas and greater influence. Conclusion: This study highlights the variety of strategies stakeholders use in drug policymaking, and how stakeholders’ resources are connected to their power and opportunities to influence drug policy. Consequently, power outweighs interest, leaving PWUD and significant others in a weak position. A political will is necessary to ensure more equitable stakeholder involvement in drug policymaking

    Detta examensarbete består av en längre skönlitterär översättning från engelska till svenska, samt en översättningsteoretisk kommentar. Källtexten utgörs av utdrag ur två olika kapitel i Shelby Mahurins debutroman Serpent & Dove, första boken i samma trilogi. I första hand har en acceptansinriktad översättning eftersträvats men i vissa fall inte varit optimalt för textsorten. Bland de mest framträdande problemen finns översättning av olika typer av bildspråk, kulturella referenser samt anpassning av kontext. Skälen till varför acceptansinriktad översättning inte alltid varit optimalt samt vilka alternativa översättningslösningar som applicerats på respektive problem diskuteras i översättningskommentaren. Kommentaren diskuterar även svårigheter med att anpassa en text för den aktuella målgruppen och de begränsningar som kan finnas med acceptansinriktad översättning.This essay covers a longer literary translation from English to Swedish, along with a translation commentary. The source text consists of excerpts from two different chapters in Shelby Mahurin’s debut novel Serpent & Dove, the first book of the same trilogy. An acceptanceoriented translation has primarily been sought, but has not always been optimal in regards to the text type. Among the more prominent issues have been the translation of different types of imagery, cultural references, and adaptation of context. The reasons as to why acceptanceoriented translation has not always been preferable and which alternative translation solutions have been applied to each issue are discussed in the translation commentary. The commentary also addresses the difficulties of adapting a text for the current target audience and the limitations that may exist within the applied translation principle

    Formation and tectonic evolution of the Yukon-Koyukuk Basin, Alaska

    The Yukon-Koyukuk Basin (YKB) is a large wedge-shaped depression south of the Brooks Range orogen in Alaska. It consists of two sub-basins, the northern Kobuk-Koyukuk Basin and the southern Lower-Yukon Basin, separated by remnants of the Koyukuk Arc Terrane. In the Late Jurassic, this arc began colliding with the Arctic Alaska continental margin, resulting in Brookian orogeny. Hypotheses for YKB formation vary from a forearc-backarc setting to formation during post-collisional lithospheric extension of the Brookian hinterland. Although this point remains debated, part of YKB development is clearly related to Brookian orogenesis. While the beginning of the collision is well constrained by synorogenic deposits on the northern side of the Brooks Range, the evolution of the YKB remains unclear. To test which model best describes basin formation and to better assess basin evolution, this thesis investigates the sedimentary units deposited within it. Sediments are effective in recording orogenic evolution, documenting progressive mountain belt denudation, linking erosional detritus to distinctive source areas, constraining depositional ages through U-Pb mineral dating, and more. This PhD thesis characterizes YKB sedimentary units using point counting of framework grains (quartz, feldspars, lithics) in thin section to determine composition, degree of transport, and maturity, and, together with new paleocurrent data, defines sediment dispersal patterns. Heavy mineral analysis further refines provenance and associated source regions. U-Pb analyses of volcanic and detrital zircons provide absolute age constraints and define shifts in sediment supply from early volcanic- to later metamorphic-dominated input. Zircon trace element chemistry provides insight into magmatic sources and allows evaluation of tectonic environments in which magmas formed. Integrated data suggest active sedimentation of deposits with distinct volcanic input characterized by strong continental contribution at ~138 Ma (Valanginian), consistent with the forearc-backarc model rather than the extensional scenario. This was followed in the late Early Cretaceous (~112 Ma, Albian) by deep-marine turbiditic deposits with strong metamorphic input from the surrounding highlands, later overlain by more proximal conglomeratic deposits at ~100 Ma. During the Late Cretaceous, inferred east-west convergence between the North American and Eurasian plates possibly caused additional uplift of the Ruby Terrane. Its enhanced erosion marked a major provenance shift, with sediment supply moving from the Brooks Range in the northern Kobuk-Koyukuk Basin to the Ruby Terrane in the southern Kobuk-Koyukuk Basin and eastern Lower-Yukon Basin. Increased Ruby Terrane uplift further confined the southern Kobuk-Koyukuk Basin, resulting in rapid infill and deposition of fluvio-deltaic deposits. In addition, a structurally controlled valley cutting across the Koyukuk Arc Terrane funnelled sediment to the backarc basin, leading to the deposition of slurry beds and directly connecting the forearc and backarc domains. Comparisons with modern systems such as the Banda Arc-Timor and Luzon Arc-Taiwan highlight strong similarities in tectonic setting, metamorphic grade, volcanic geochemistry, and basin stratigraphy. These parallels improve understanding of sedimentary basins formed in arc-continent collisional settings, providing fundamental insights for refining models of their formation and evolution

    Enhancing Industrial Training through Situated Visualization in Augmented Reality: A Comparative Study of 2D vs. 3D Labels in Maintenance Tasks

    Introduction: Industrial training is important for knowledge sharing, keeping workers safe, and guiding them to perform tasks successfully. Traditional training methods in industrial environments often lack real-time guidance and interactive feedback, making knowledge transfer challenging, which can be harder for novice workers who intend to gain practical skills. Augmented reality (AR) and situated visualization (SV), which present spatially relevant, in-depth instructions directly in the environment, offer a promising solution. However, there is a lack of validated, decision-ready guidance on how to design these visualization patterns to enhance training outcomes. By consulting with industry experts, this thesis presents an immersive tool deployed on head-mounted displays (HMDs) and explores how two different SV patterns -- two-dimensional (2D) vs.~three-dimensional (3D) labels -- affect user experience (UX) and task performance in an AR-based training scenario for machine maintenance. Research Question: The research question in this study is: ``How do different SV label designs (2D vs. 3D) affect UX and task performance in an AR-based training environment for industrial maintenance tasks?'' UX is assessed through perceived usability, cognitive and physical workload, and discomfort; task performance is measured by task completion time and memory recall. Method: An experimental research strategy compares two instructional designs—2D vs. 3D labels— within a virtual reality (VR)-simulated AR training environment. The training simulation is developed using Unity 3D and deployed on the Meta Quest Pro HMDs. The user study involves 24 convenience-sampled participants, including students and acquaintances representing novice trainees. Each SV condition is tested by 12 participants. Quantitative data are collected through standardized questionnaires (SUS, NASA-TLX, and SSQ), task completion time measurements, and a delayed memory recall questionnaire. The results are analyzed and discussed to evaluate how different SV designs impact usability, workload, discomfort, task completion time, and memory recall. Results: The results show that both SV conditions achieve high usability in AR-based industrial training. Although differences between conditions are not statistically significant, the 3D condition shows shorter task completion times, lower discomfort, and slightly lower workload, whereas the 2D condition shows a slight advantage in usability. In general, memory recall performance appears similar across both designs; however, conclusions remain limited due to several missing responses. Discussion: This study reveals that both SV designs effectively support AR-based industrial training by providing clear, spatially relevant guidance for the safety-critical Lock Out, Tag Out, Try Out (LoToTo) procedure. The primary finding is that there were no statistically significant differences between the 2D video labels and 3D ghost labels across all outcome measures. This suggests that both visualization methods were highly effective and achieved high usability scores. This shows that for SV training, displaying clear, spatially relevant guidance is more important than the specific dimensional format. Despite the lack of statistical significance, observable trends indicate designers can prioritize the 3D ghost labels when speed and user comfort are critical, and use 2D video labels when higher perceived usability and a familiar user interface are expected to be the priority. Limitations include student participants instead of real industrial trainees, the absence of a comparison to traditional training methods, and using a VR-simulated environment rather than deploying AR on the real factory floor. Future research should involve novice industrial workers, explore additional forms of SV beyond labels, include traditional training methods in comparisons, and aim to develop the project in AR to take advantage of the tangible aspect of the actual machines. Insights from this work contribute to designing AR tools that may enhance learning efficiency by improving task performance and UX in industrial training settings

    Nurses’ Learning During Specialist Education in Intensive Care : – Opportunities and Constraints for Professional Development

    This master’s thesis explores nurses’ learning during specialist education in intensive care, focusing on the opportunities and constraints they experience in both academic and clinical contexts. Drawing on theories of situated learning, communities of practice, reflection, experiential learning, and multidimensional views of learning, the study addresses a gap in understanding how nurses perceive learning across these settings. Data were collected through six in-depth interviews with nurses undergoing specialist training. A dialogical and abductive analytical approach enabled an iterative interplay between empirical data and theory, providing a nuanced understanding of how theoretical concepts are expressed in nurses’ accounts. Findings show that learning during specialist education in intensive care is a relational and situated process shaped by emotional engagement, including a sense of responsibility, social participation, reflection, and interaction with academic and clinical environments. Learning contributes to the gradual development of professional competence and identity, but is constrained by organizational pressures, limited opportunities for reflection, and shortcomings in shared meaning-making and collaborative participation. Supportive practice communities, inclusive social interactions, and pedagogical guidance foster meaningful participation, dialogue, and integration of theory and practice. Diversity within practice communities further enhances learning by challenging routines and promoting critical reflection. The study concludes that pedagogical awareness, emotionally attuned supervision, and structured prospective reflection are central to supporting nurses’ learning. Flexible programme arrangements can strengthen opportunities for well-supported learning, emphasizing the importance of reflective practice, social inclusion, and supportive learning environments for professional development in intensive care

    What’s the Problem with Illustrated Mathematical Word Problems? : Exploring Their Complexity Through Sociocultural and New Materialist Paradigms

    Illustrated mathematical word problems (IMWPs) have long been a central element in mathematics education. Multiple research traditions have examined their constitution and functioning, and their effects on teaching and learning, revealing many of the challenges they pose in practice. Yet, IMWPs continue to cause difficulties—particularly for multilingual students. To engage with these recurring issues, without reducing them to a single explanation, I define a research problematique that attends to the multiple ways in which IMWPs have been studied and understood. Theory, method, and ethics are kept in continuous conversation rather than in fixed alignment. IMWPs are approached as complex and dynamic entities within mathematics education, tracing how they emerge across historical, educational, and research contexts. IMWPs are treated not as static tasks but as relational and agential participants in teaching, learning, and research—shaping how representations through text and image act  within classroom practice. The thesis has two parts, each with distinct theoretical and methodological approaches. The first examines the difficulties multilingual students encounter when reading and solving IMWPs and the strategies teachers use to scaffold their proficiency. Drawing on sociocultural theories of learning and a four-fold framework of social praxis, and deploying qualitative methods—including think-aloud interviews and classroom observations in multilingual classrooms—two empirical studies explore the social, cultural, and linguistic experiences that multilingual students mobilize and create when working with IMWPs. The studies reveal how IMWPs continuously mobilize forms of exclusion. The second part shifts toward new materialist and post qualitative approaches, attending to the agency of IMWPs themselves as well as human interaction. IMWPs are treated as active participants in classrooms, shaping what can occur, what can be said and imagined. Three investigations are conducted: a literature intra-view that traces how IMWPs act, with whom they engage, and how they move across past, present, and possible futures; a speculative fabulation that reimagines IMWPs otherwise, exploring both the promises and limits of imagining and performing them differently; and a collage that follows small visual and linguistic changes to see how they reconfigure what counts as mathematical, cultural, or social difference. Together, these explorations show how IMWPs can reinforce dominant cultural narratives and implicit norms that shape who is recognized as a valued learner, while also demonstrating how alternative research methods can surface the often unseen or normalized assumptions embedded in educational materials. Across the thesis, IMWPs emerge not as neutral tasks but as relational, agential, and culturally situated artifacts that enact particular ways of knowing, participating, and becoming—especially in multilingual classrooms. By moving between sociocultural and new materialist perspectives, the work reimagines how IMWPs, and mathematics education more broadly, can be studied and thought-with. Knowledge, ethics, and didactics are inseparable—continuously moving, responsive, and entangled—and this highlights the tensions, possibilities, and responsibilities that IMWPs bring to educational research and practice
