    Inside the Ark (hechal) are the Sirei Torah in the traditional Sephardi round casing. The Ark faces south (Antakya is north from Jerusalem) and protrudes from the exterior of the synagogue, recalling the architecture of the mihrab -the niche in mosques which denotes the direction towards Mecca.Digital imag

    No more than a mile from the extensive ruins of Pergamon is found the only synagogue of Bergama, adjacent to the former Jewish school. Four central columns define the tevah. The wooden ceiling is lavishly ornamented and painted; each side is different. The tourism-conscious municipal government has expressed interest in restoring the synagogue as a protected landmark. Yet the building is in dire condition and, if protective measures are not taken soon, faces certain collapse.Digital imag
