George Segal: An iconographic study of biblical imagery.

    No full text
George Segal is best known for his sculptural tableaux in which plaster casts of human figures are placed within a realistic context. Because Segal uses 'found' objects, his work is generally associated with Pop art. A close examination of his oeuvre proves this assumption is misleading. The major studies of the artist's work thus far have focused on a stylistic analysis which, in highlighting his affinities to Pop, make his work seem one dimensional. The one theme that unites Pop artists is a concern with consumer culture, a subject with which Segal is only minimally concerned. This study demonstrates that Segal is more interested in human relationships than in the commodification of American culture.Proceeding from this assumption, this dissertation examines Segal's work thematically, concentrating on a small but crucial group of works illustrating Old Testament stories. This dissertation undertakes an iconographic study of Segal's Genesis scenes, and places these works in the context of Segal's position as a modern artist, rather than specifically as a Pop artist. Segal has completed eight major tableaux, as well as several minor works, which illustrate tales from Genesis. These include the Expulsion, Lot and His Daughters, the Parting of Abraham and Ishmael, the Binding of Isaac, and Jacob's Dream. He has also executed a Holocaust memorial in which several biblical references are literally buried in a pile of corpses. Segal's consistent fascination with Biblical themes throughout his career indicates their importance. His attraction to Biblical themes places him within a long tradition of illustrating the Bible, and is indicative of a larger interest in narrative art which further separates Segal from his Pop contemporaries.George Segal has been my primary resource for this study. Hours of interviews with Segal have uncovered an autobiographical component in his sculpture which is most apparent in his Genesis works. In addition to aesthetic issues this study explores Segal's art as autobiography. The Genesis scenes demonstrate how the artist weaves together layers of personal, political and religious beliefs. By examining Segal's Genesis works in the context of autobiography, Biblical and Midrashic (Jewish exegesis of Biblical writings) texts this dissertation achieves a more complex reading of Segal's work which serves as a paradigm for studying his oeuvre, as well as his relationship to modernism.Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick, 1996.School code: 0190
