Kurt Gruebler was born in Vienna in 1925. He went to school on Hetzgasse in the third Viennese district, and immigrated to the US via the Netherlands. AHC Interview with Kurt Elias
Kurt Elias was born in Vienna on September 3, 1918. He lived with his family at Liechtensteinstrasse 2 in the ninth district of Vienna. He studied at the University of Vienna and between 1936 and 1937 he spent a voluntary year in the Austrian army. He left Vienna for Prague in 1938, then went to England, and took the ship "Normandy" to New York, where he arrived in November of 1938. He then moved on to Memphis, TN, where he went to graduate school.
