Memoir of Susanne Hahn MarkwalddigitizedRichard MarkwaldSusanne Hahn Markwald was born on December 27, 1916 in Berlin, Germany. Her parents were the physician Georg Hahn (born 1882 in Breslau) and his wife Else Blum Hahn (born 1888 in Deutsch-Eylau). She could not finish her high-school (Gymnasium) education in Berlin after 1933 and completed an apprenticeship with a dentist instead. In 1934 she met the medical student Heinz Markwald; they got engaged in 1937, shortly before he immigrated to the United States. Susanne could follow him in 1938, but her parents perished in Auschwitz. She worked as a dentist’s assistant in New York and got married to Heinz Markwald in 1940
