    The 10:25: A Novella-in-Flash

    No full text
This book is not available on ChesterRepWelcome aboard the 10:25 to Manchester, where Train Manager Malcolm is working his last shift. His world is falling apart, and what waits for him after his shift is unthinkable, but before he leaves, he has to spend one last day with the people who’ve moved through his world and through his train every day for years. They’re all different and have their unique problems, but they’re also the same, because if there’s one thing life does, it’s kick everyone with equal ferocity. It’s how everyone deals with it that matters. Follow Malcolm through his train and catch glimpses of jilted lovers, unrequited teens, grieving sons, and hopeful romancers, all interwoven with the story of Malcolm’s family, and the most difficult thing he’s ever had to do. The 10:25 is about how appearances can mislead; how people’s lives are bubbling under the surface; and how love, kindness, and respect are everything.Unfunde

Stable carbon isotopes and bulk-sediment geochemistry as indicators of relative sea-level change in tidal marshes, mangroves and isolation basins: application and developments

    Get PDF
Bulk organic stable carbon isotope (δ13C) and accompanying bulk organic geochemical measurements have been increasingly used as a relative sea-level (RSL) indicator over the last two decades. Their utility as a RSL indicator is premised on the ability of bulk organic δ13C and bulk organic geochemistry to distinguish between organic matter (OM) sources in coastal environments, and to identify changes in OM source contributions in sediment sequences in response to RSL change. We evaluate the performance of bulk δ13C and bulk organic geochemistry as a RSL indicator in tidal marsh, mangrove and isolation basin environments. The interpretation of isotope measurements from these environments requires knowledge of the processes controlling contemporary OM δ13C, and the influence of decomposition on bulk values. We review in detail the controls on the δ13C composition of OM in tidal marshes, mangroves and isolation basins, and advocate wherever possible for the collection of contemporary geochemical datasets corrected for the 13C Suess effect to help inform interpretations. From the wide range of case studies considered, an emerging principle is that the degree of isotopic distinctiveness between OM sources is key in determining how the technique can be deployed as a RSL indicator. This can range in use from the provision of qualitative information on changes in marine influence over time, to the identification of sea-level index points at lithostratigraphic contacts, and most powerfully to the recognition of inter-tidal sub-environments with isotopically well-constrained vertical limits.N/

"I code as much as I can because you never know what they might ask for”. The role of the coach in Performance Analysis: The view of the analyst

    Get PDF
This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a published work that appeared in final form in [International journal of Sports Science & Coaching]. To access the final edited and published work see http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/17479541241270426Performance Analysis (PA) is viewed as an integral feature of soccer; however, the processes underpinning such practice are often described as simple, linear procedures. This fails to acknowledge the dynamism of PA and given increased investment and employment of analysts in professional soccer, scrutiny of the current processes and duties associated with the role would seem timely. To this purpose, eight full-time analysts in the English Football League (EFL) and English National League (National League) participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews and transcripts were subjected to inductive reflective thematic analysis. The data analysis revealed two higher-order categories (Flying solo / Coach control) and four themes classified as lower-order (PA pragmatism / Identifying indicators / The reticent coach / Autocratic presentations). The findings of this study highlight that the responsibilities of the performance analyst range from acting on their own initiative to responding to requests and instructions from the coach. Subsequently, the responsibility for individual actions/activities related to PA is dependent on what aspects of analysis are to be used, who is the recipient of the data/video/presentation, when in the relationship between analyst and coach the activities are developed and when in the match-play process they are carried out.N/

The efficacy of Ketamine for acute and chronic pain in patients with cancer: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

© 2024 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.A correction to this article has been published which can be accessed via this DOI: 10.3390/healthcare12222219Managing cancer-related pain poses significant challenges, prompting research into alternative approaches such as ketamine. This systematic review aims to analyze and summarize the impact of ketamine as an adjuvant to opioid therapy for cancer-related pain. We conducted a literature review in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus from 1 January 1982 to 20 October 2023. Abstracts were screened against inclusion criteria, and eligible studies underwent a full-text review. Data was extracted from the included studies, and a framework analysis approach summarized the evidence regarding ketamine’s use in patients with cancer. A total of 21 randomized clinical trials were included, and the quality of all the included studies was good or fair. Significant improvements in pain scores and reduced morphine consumption were consistently observed with intravenous ketamine administration for postoperative pain control, particularly when combined with other analgesics such as morphine. Ketamine was less effective when used as an analgesic for chronic pain management, with several studies on neuropathic pain or chemotherapy-induced neuropathy finding minimal significant effect on reduction of pain scores or morphine requirements. The efficacy of ketamine in pain management appears to depend on factors such as dosage, route of administration, and patient population.Unfunde

Codes over a ring of order 32 with two Gray maps

    No full text
We describe a ring of order 32 and prove that it is a local Frobenius ring. We study codes over this ring and we give two distinct non-equivalent linear orthogonality-preserving Gray maps to the binary space. Self-dual codes are studied over this ring as well as the binary self-dual codes that are the Gray images of those codes. Specifically, we show that the image of a self-dual code over this ring is a binary self-dual code with an automorphism consisting of 2n transpositions for the first map and n transpositions for the second map. We relate the shadows of binary codes to additive codes over the ring. As Gray images of codes over the ring, binary self-dual [ 70 , 35 , 12 ] codes with 91 distinct weight enumerators are constructed for the first time in the literature
