    Composed of 36 black&white photographs (portrait format) taken in the 1980s and 1990s. It is included in one of the box sets of 100 Café Royal Books titled Archive and is in the collection of major institutions. Mailboxes San Diego 1986-1987 was exhibited at the Martin Parr Foundation in the exhibition Café Royal Books: Documentary, Zines and Subversion (14 April-12 June 2022); and at Stills: Centre for Photography, Edinburgh as part of the exhibition titled Café Royal Books (10 November 2023 – 10 February 2024).© Stephen Clarke & Café Royal Books. All Rights Reserved,When Stephen Clarke arrived on America’s West Coast in the mid-1980s having just completed his art degree, he had expected to feel a familiarity with its landscape. Growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s he had absorbed a version of California by watching popular American detective shows. Onto this childhood picture he later mapped the work of the photo-artists based there —Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Lewis Baltz—who informed his art practice. For a year he took photographs of San Diego, struggling to navigate through an arid and sprawling landscape which he discovered was alien territory. [a version of this abstract was written by Julia Garcia Hernandez and first published in the RPS Contemporary Photography, No. 63, Spring 2016] Mailboxes San Diego 1986-1987 was published by Café Royal Books in an edition of 250. It was edited by Craig Atkinson, founder of Café Royal Books. Mailboxes San Diego 1986-1987 is the first of Clarke’s four CRB publications dedicated to the subject of San Diego, California, USA.     © 2024 The Author. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Reports of primates being able to recognise familiar humans are rare in the literature and tend to be regarded as anecdotal. The COVID-19 pandemic created two unique conditions facilitating the observation of spontaneous face recognition in zoo apes: i) lengthy gaps in contact with human visitors due to lockdowns and zoo closures, and ii) the wearing of face masks obscuring at least half the face of familiar individuals. Here, I report on the historical context of the familiarity between a primatologist and individual apes of two species, how those apes consistently showed recognition of this particular human over a time span of up to thirty years, how facial recognition was extended to family members, and how recognition persisted even when a significant portion of the face was obscured by a mask. This constitutes, to my knowledge, the first documented cases of recognition of familiar human faces changed by time and COVID-19 face masks in two great ape species. Although based on just two individuals, the documentation of this ability is important because it arose in a more naturalistic and spontaneous context compared to typical face processing research in which primates are tested with experimental stimuli in a laboratory setting. Implications for face processing theory and applications for the therapeutic utility of faces are discussed. These observations provide insight into the evolutionary origins of face recognition and, sitting at the interface of science and society, are of interest to a wide audience

    Healthcare workers in clinical training are at a high risk of stress and burnout due to their dual clinical practice and academic components. The psychosocial clinical environment and personality traits contribute to healthcare workers' increased risk of psychological distress. The two-dimensional circumplex proposed by the complete state model of mental health suggests that people with mental illness symptoms can have mental well-being and are seen as traversing the circumplex from floundering to flourishing. Poverty is a significant predictor of mental illness, and COVID-19 has been linked to poorer mental health. The WHO's Global Mental Health Report identifies three paradigm-shifting strategies for enhancing mental health, including elevating those who are impacted and reshaping social and living conditions. The United Nation's action plan is to achieve sustainable health goals for 2030. The aim is to improve leadership and governance, responsive and integrated care, strategies for promotion and prevention, and the use of evidence and research to improve mental health

    Copyright (c) 2023 Jackie Potter, Katharine Welsh, Laura MilneSince the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, there has been a dawning understanding in the higher education sector of ways Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools can challenge the traditional roles of academic teaching staff (e.g., Chan and Tsi, 2023) and support learning by students. For example, Mike Sharples in Sabzalieva and Valentini (2023) identifies ten roles that ChatGPT can play which would all support student learners. Media and sector concern has focused on whether GenAI use by students would disrupt the integrity of degrees and awards and there is a good deal of debate on how to adapt assessment, learning outcomes and curricula to reflect and reward unique human competences associated with a discipline or subject and embrace students’ use of GenAI. Educational development colleagues have been at the vanguard of leading higher education provider reactions and responses to the widespread availability and capabilities of GenAI. This case study reflects on a year of action to lead teaching staff and students as well as institutional policy and practice through a series of steps to enable rapid, proportionate and robust change. We apply Kotter’s (1996) eight stage change model to reflect on the activities, achievements and challenges to date. We do not purport to have finished but rather can see, one year in, that increasingly activity is more embedded into structures, routines, the practice of others, and our work as educational developers. We reflect forward too on the ways we will act next to ‘make change stick’ and on our own personal, professional journeys as educational change leaders, all of whom were new appointments in the educational development centre. The definitive, peer reviewed and edited version of this article is published in [Drawing: Research, Theory, Practice, 9, 1, 3-18, 2024, https://doi.org/10.1386/drtp_00125_2].Editorial: Drawing is widely appreciated as a means of knowing, something testified to in a wide range of practices, fine art practices as well as practices such as architectural, botanical and other scientific drawing. This text recounts anxieties regarding the epistemic worth of drawing that persist from early modern art education and before. These relate to the embodied, situated and enactive nature of drawing. The text charts a distrust of the body as aid in the attainment of knowledge, as audible in Plato’s dialogues as it is in the disputes of the first Florentine academy. It delineates the deep-seated apprehension evident in theories of disegno as proposed by 16th century artists/theorists such as Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccaro who sought to elevate the status of drawing to an overarching principle, firmly ensconced within the theoretical domain. That strategy privileged drawing as a paragon while paradoxically distanced it from association with the taint of manual labour. The discussion identifies the same apprehension and distrust in the Duchampian disparagement of skill and retinal art – the retina too is a body part. These phenomena have been diagnosed elsewhere in terms of deskilling the artist, reflecting a wider societal division; the elevation of symbolic labour over productive labour, an all too familiar hierarchy. The text expounds recent research rooted in philosophy of mind and cognitive science, which offers a perspective that challenges these apprehensions, including Somaesthetics and Situated Cognition theory that assert the essential embodied, embedded, extended, and enactive dimensions of cognition – the 4E model.Unfunde

    Designing defect enriched Bi2Ti2O7/C3N4 micro-photo-electrolysis reactor for photo-Fenton like catalytic reaction

    Among various advanced oxidation processes, photo-Fenton like catalysis, which couples solar energy with Fenton-like catalysis to generate highly reactive species for wastewater decontamination, has attracted broad interests. However, photo-Fenton catalysts usually suffer from poor pH adaptability, metal leaching and photogenerated charge recombination. Herein, a novel defect-enriched Bi2Ti2O7/C3N4 (BTO/CN) heterojunction is prepared via ball milling-thermal treatment method and used as a durable photo-Fenton like catalyst to degrade phenol in water. The BTO/CN heterojunction shows an excellent optical absorption capacity, and a superior e--h+ separation efficiency. With the addition of PMS, a micro-photo-electrolysis reactor can be formed in the BTO/CN, rendering it high photocatalytic activity, excellent tolerance to environmental condition and exceptional stability. The BTO/CN micro-photo-electrolysis reactor exhibits superior performance in phenol removal and excellent tolerance towards salt ions. Non-radical pathway and radical dotOH oxidation are demonstrated to contribute to phenol degradation in the BTO/CN heterojunction photo-Fenton-like system. The PMS can simultaneously boost the interfacial charge transmission from BTO to CN forming internal BTO photoanode and CN photocathode, leading to sustainable photocatalytic performance without secondary pollution. This work successfully demonstrates a feasible strategy to develop solar energy assisted Fenton-like catalyst for efficient water decontamination, which holds a great promise towards practical photo-Fenton water decontamination
