    Developing a framework for enhancing security testing of android applications

Android is currently the most popular mobile operating system, and it is susceptible to exploitation attempts by malicious entities. This has led to an increased focus on the security of Android applications. This dissertation proposed the development of a framework which provides a systematic approach to testing the security of Android applications. This framework was developed based on a comprehensive review of existing security testing methodologies and tools. In achieving the study objectives, a test application was run on an emulator, Burp Suite was used as a proxy tool to capture HTTP and HTTPS traffic for analysis, reverse engineering was carried out, static and dynamic analysis were executed, network traffic was captured and analysed with tcpdump and Wireshark, intent sniffing was carried out, fuzz testing was discussed, and a proof-of-concept tool (automation script) was developed. This work covers various aspects of Android applications’ security testing, and the proposed framework provides developers with a practical and effective approach to testing the security of their Android applications, thereby improving the overall security of the Android application ecosystem.unfunde

    Errors in diabetic insulin therapy and the vitality of proper precautions in Bangladesh: Real-life insights from the developing world

Given the increasing prevalence of diabetes and insulin therapy in Bangladesh, it is crucial to identify and prevent these errors. This study uses case-based clinical experiences to thematically analyze insulin therapy errors and propose preventive measures. The study aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges faced in managing insulin therapy in a developing country setting and the importance of involving various stakeholders. Materials and Methods: This is a qualitative research that used a case study approach to identify and analyze errors in insulin therapy in diabetic patients who had experienced adverse clinical consequences. The cases were thematically analyzed to generate insights into current global health problems resulting from erroneous insulin therapy. Results: The two case studies highlight potential risks of errors in insulin therapy, including poor glycemic control, complications, and death. The analysis also highlights the importance of careful monitoring, checks, and communication among health-care providers, patients, and pharmacists to prevent such errors. In addition, it emphasizes the need for education and awareness among patients and health-care providers to ensure safe and effective insulin therapy. Conclusion: Accurate insulin therapy is crucial for diabetes management and preventing adverse outcomes. Identified themes emphasize improved communication, education, and monitoring to minimize therapy errors. Insights from this study can inform policies and practices for better patient outcomes. Further research can identify the root causes and develop interventions to prevent errors, leading to improved quality of life for diabetics.VoR added to CR 19/02/202

    Co-presence of Epstein-Barr Virus and Human Papillomavirus is associated with a high frequency of p53 gene mutation in cervical cancer diagnosed in southern Nigeria

    Background: Evidence shows that the co-existence of Human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with aggressive and poorly differentiated cervical squamous cell carcinomas (CSCC) phenotype. Aim: This study aimed to determine the frequency of mutant p53 (mtp53) gene in single and co-existence of HPV and oncogenic EBV latent membrane protein 1 (E-LMP1) among women diagnosed with CSCC in Southern Nigeria. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 105 cervical cancer tissues, diagnosed between January 2016 and December 2018. The tissue sections were immunohistochemically stained for mtp53, E-LMP1, and HPV proteins and scored accordingly. Descriptive, Chi- square test and Pearson’s correlation were performed, and statistical significance was set at p≤0.05. Result: Among the stained sections, the frequency of HPV, E-LMP1, and E-LMP1/HPV detection was 8.6%, 20.0%, and 42.9%, respectively. The mtp53 detection was higher in ELMP1/HPV co-presence (86.7%) compared with HPV and ELMP1 mono-presence (55.6%, and 14.3%, respectively), and this was statistically significant (p< 0.0001). The prevalence of invasive and non-invasive cases of CSCC were 62.9% and 37.1%, respectively. E-LMP1 and HPV co-presence were significantly higher in invasive cervical cancer (48.5%) compared to non-invasive cervical cancer cases (33.3%) at p= 0.156. The E-LMP1 presence was significantly higher in poorly differentiated CSCC (50.0%) compared to the moderately and well- differentiated CSCC (25.0% and 10.5%, respectively) at p= 0.011. Conclusion: This study revealed a higher frequency of EBV/HPV co- infection in CSCC. It also shown- that a higher frequency of mtp53 in E-LMP1 and HPV co-presence, suggesting that E-LMP1 could be responsible for the high CSCC lethality in West Africa.Unfunde

    Vibration-Based Structural Health Monitoring of Composite Plates with Integrated Sustainable Micro-Fibre Transducers

    Composites have gained widespread acceptance in various industries due to their exceptional performance over the last 10 years. In 2024, industries predominantly employ manual and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for routine inspection and maintenance. However, a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technology that is low in energy consumption, easy to install and applicable to various working conditions could cater better to market demands. To address this, the thesis focuses on the identification, localisation, and quantification of damage through vibration analysis methods based on Frequency Response Functions (FRFs). It also explores potential challenges in the practical application of these methods. The thesis relies on the integral differential method to measure the variation of FRF between the pristine and damaged stages, referred to as the Difference of Response (DoR) index. A series of carbon fibre composite panels with integrated microfibre composite (MFC) sensors arranged in equilateral triangles were fabricated. Through sine swept-frequency vibration testing at three different frequency ranges (10 Hz to 1 kHz, 1 kHz to 3 kHz, and 3 kHz to 5 kHz), the dynamic responses of the sample in both the impact-damaged and pristine stages were recorded in real-time, allowing for mutual comparison. Combined with damage geometrical dimensions measured by thermography imaging technology, a quantification formula is derived through numerical analysis, demonstrating a segmented linear relation between the DoR and damage size governed by power and logarithmic functions. According to the local effect of the damage, the DoR results of each region in the sample were compared, successfully achieving damage localisation in single and multiple damage scenarios. Additionally, experimental results highlight the significant influence of environmental factors on the dynamic behaviours of the structure. This thesis contributes significantly to the realisation of SHM using traditional vibration methods and addresses a longstanding development gap in this field

A custom-made Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is designed for identification of four different classes of brain tumors viz. Meningioma, Glioma, Pituitary brain tumor and normal (no tumor). Furthermore, another tailor-made lightweight model is presented for the segmentation of the tumor from the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. The output of the segmentation model is the ‘mask’ depicting the tumor region. The overall performance in terms of detection accuracy, and segmentation accuracy, for the two models is found to be approximately 95% for both the cases individually. The proposed models are worthy additions to the existing literature on brain tumor classification and segmentation models due to their low-parameter count which make the models amenable for deployment on resource-constrained edge hardware

    Exploring Footedness, Throwing Arm, and Handedness as Predictors of Eyedness Using Cluster Analysis and Machine Learning: Implications for the Origins of Behavioural Asymmetries

    Behavioural asymmetries displayed by individuals, such as hand preference and foot preference, tend to be lateralized in the same direction (left or right). This may be because their co-ordination conveys functional benefits for a variety of motor behaviours. To explore the potential functional relationship between key motor asymmetries, we examined whether footedness, handedness, or throwing arm was the strongest predictor of eyedness. Behavioural asymmetries were measured by self-report in 578 left-handed and 612 right-handed individuals. Cluster analysis of the asymmetries revealed four handedness groups: consistent right-handers, left-eyed right-handers, consistent left-handers, and inconsistent left-handers (who were left-handed but right-lateralized for footedness, throwing and eyedness). Supervised machine learning models showed the importance of footedness, in addition to handedness, in determining eyedness. In right-handers, handedness was the best predictor of eyedness, followed closely by footedness, and for left-handers it was footedness. Overall, predictors were more informative in predicting eyedness for individuals with consistent lateral preferences. Implications of the findings in relation to the origins and genetics of handedness and sports training are discussed. Findings are related to fighting theories of handedness and to bipedalism, which evolved after manual dexterity, and which may have led to some humans being right-lateralized for ballistic movements and left-lateralized for hand dexterity
