Randomized Clinical Trial for the Optimization of Dyslipidemia Management in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease Undergoing In-Hospital Maintenance Hemodialysis Therapy
Background/Objectives: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) frequently develop L-carnitine (LC) deficiency, leading to dyslipidemia and increased cardiovascular risk. While LC supplementation may improve dyslipidemia, the optimal route of administration remains unclear. This study evaluates the effects of LC on dyslipidemia in MHD patients and compares oral versus intravenous (IV) administration. Methods: In this dual-center randomized controlled trial (NCT05817799), 102 MHD patients aged 18–50 years were randomized to receive either oral (500 mg thrice daily) or IV LC (20 mg/kg post-dialysis thrice weekly for 23 weeks followed by 500 mg oral daily for 1 week) for 24 weeks, and blood samples were obtained to evaluate lipid profile parameters. Results: Eighty-three patients completed the study (oral n = 49, IV n = 34). Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in all lipid parameters (p 0.05). Conclusions: Both oral and IV interventions effectively improved lipid profiles, and IV administration showed a more pronounced effect on LDL reduction, suggesting potentially greater efficacy of IV administration for LDL reduction.N/
Efficient Spectrum Sharing in Cognitive Radio Networks With NOMA Using Computational Intelligence
The integration of Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) offers great potential for improving spectral efficiency in 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) networks. This study proposes an efficient spectrum-sharing technique for dual-hop CRNs using NOMA, optimized by an Improved Artificial Bee Colony (IABC) algorithm and guided by a Single Input Single Output Fuzzy Rule-Based (SISO-FRBS) System. In this setup, a distant primary transmitter communicates with the primary receiver via a secondary NOMA relay. The objective is to maximize the sum data rate of secondary users (SUs) while minimizing total transmission power. SISO-FRBS enhances IABC search process by dynamically guiding the search agents, improving both optimization quality and convergence. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves the primary data rate benchmark of 5bit/s/Hz at a transmit power of 19mW, compared to 23mW with traditional ABC, achieving a 19.04% improvement in power efficiency.N/
Generative artificial intelligence and learning: At the dawn of Idiocracy?

We identify several concerns associated with generative artificial intelligence in relation to knowledge processing and developing understanding, including misalignment between the AI’s intended and actual use, its rhetorical duplicity, risk of technical dependence, negative impact on creativity and contextual understanding, overall decreased knowledge quality, the production of ‘illusory truths’, AI’s progressive encapsulation and its exponential proliferation. A multiple case study evaluating how school sport partnerships can achieve impact within a competitive, external provider PE and school sport market

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.This study aimed to research the factors required to achieve impact between England’s School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) and schools, and whether theory could help to improve evaluations. In the last 10 years, SSPs have changed from being one of the sole providers in this field towards having to compete with other agencies commonly referred to as external providers (EPs) within a marketised education system. Sixteen research participants (teachers and managers) were interviewed from SSPs within two contrasting regions. The need to capture participants’ thoughts and feelings led to a qualitative approach utilising a multiple case study design, underpinned by deductive and inductive reasoning enabling theory to emerge both before and after the collection of data. Data analysis was enacted through coding and the presentation of themes. Results revealed the importance of head teachers for creating successful partnerships leading towards impact within school communities. In addition, SSPs needed to understand context in terms of fulfilling a client’s needs, particularly in demonstrating how PE could contribute towards whole-school improvement. Theoretical findings included recommendations for SSPs to use mixed methods, instead of monitoring impact solely through a quantitative approach. Evaluations could be improved through adopting programme theory in the form of theory-based impact evaluation (TBIE) to understand why change has taken place. Influence of role and competition stage on movement, heart rate and perceived task load characteristics of match officials during men’s and women’s rugby league World Cup

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.We examined the influence of rugby league match officials' role and competition stage on movement, heart rate and subjective task loads during international competition. Measures were recorded from all 28 match officials (male n = 25; female n = 3; 4 ± 3 matches per official) comprising 42 referees and 84 touch judge performances from Men's (n = 29) and Women's (n = 13) World Cup matches. More accelerations (p = 0.003) and decelerations (p = 0.013), higher mean heart rates (p = 0.006) and perceived physical load (p < 0.001) and less high-speed running (p = 0.002) occured in referees compared to touch judges. Distance, high-speed running, accelerations/decelerations, heart rate, and subjective mental, physical, temporal, effort and frustration loads (all p < 0.05) were higher during the Men's compared to Women's competition. Mean speed and high-speed running (all p < 0.05) decreased between halves in the Knockout stage, while subjective mental, physical, temporal and effort load increased (all p < 0.05). Declines in relative high-speed running between the halves were also greater during the Knockout stage (p = 0.016). The on-field role, the competition and stage influence the physical, heart rate and perceived task loads of rugby league match officials.Unfunde
Measuring the semantic priming effect across many languages

Although previous studies provide insight into the cognitive underpinnings of semantic representations, they have suffered from small sample sizes and a lack of linguistic and cultural diversity. In this Registered Report, we measured the size and the variability of the semantic priming effect across 19 languages (N = 25,163 participants analyzed) by creating the largest available database of semantic priming values based on an adaptive sampling procedure. We found evidence for semantic priming in terms of differences in response latencies between related word-pair conditions and unrelated word-pair conditions. Model comparisons showed that inclusion of a random intercept for language improved model fit, providing support for variability in semantic priming across languages. This study highlights the robustness and variability of semantic priming across languages and provides a rich, linguistically diverse dataset for further analysis.N/
Enabling organisational congruency? A critical examination of character, culture and strategic intent at the University of Chester
Higher Education (HE) in England has been subject to significant change over the past 20 years, with most recent concerns including the sector’s long-term future as financial pressures reach a critical point in many institutions. Set against a challenging, arguably neoliberal environment, and using a mixed methods approach, I critically examine the character, culture and strategic intent of one university – the University of Chester (UoC). As an insider researcher, and through utilising an adapted version of the Organisational Character Index (OCI) (Bridges, 2000) with 75% (n=47) of UoC middle managers, I assert that the organisational character type for UoC is ISTJ and the organisational shadow is ENFP.
Using this data, alongside analysis from an in-depth interview with the current Vice Chancellor, three key contributions to knowledge are noted; 1) A proposed model of character influence on organisational congruence; 2) The novel application of the Organisational Character Index to a university; and 3) The important identification of the ambivert organisation. Recommendations for germane training and development are offered for UoC, alongside opportunities for further research
A logic model to guide ‘My Grief My Way’: An intervention development study for a digital psychological support package for unmet bereavement support needs

This paper describes a logic model for an online intervention to improve coping and quality of life after bereavement. A combination approach to intervention development was used. Evidence was synthesized in iterative cycles from: (i) research literature; (ii) interviews with therapists; (iii) workshops with bereaved people; (iv) workshops with bereavement support professionals; and (v) expertise of the research team. The logic model illustrated the links between: risk factors for and indicators of grief support needs, contextual considerations for online interventions, intervention components, change mechanisms, short and long term intended outcomes at the individual and organizational level, as well as broader impacts. The logic model guided the intervention development process, fostering collaboration and synthesis of multiple sources. Numerical study for a stochastic semilinear subdiffusion equation driven by fractional Brownian motions
© 2025 Published by Elsevier.In this work, we consider the Galerkin finite element method for solving the stochastic semilinear subdiffusion equation driven by additive fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) , where the fractional Brownian motion has a Wiener integration representation. The existence and uniqueness of a mild solution are proved using the Banach fixed point theorem. The temporal and spatial regularity of the solution are studied via the semigroup approach. The finite element method is used to approximate the spatial variable. The Caputo fractional time derivative and the Riemann–Liouville integral are approximated using the Grünwald–Letnikov schemes, respectively, and the noise is discretized using the Euler method. The optimal error estimates of the fully discrete scheme are established using the discrete Laplace transform method. Under the assumption that the noise is in the trace class, we prove that the time convergence order is O ( τ min { α , H + α + γ − 1 , 1 / 2 } ) when H ∈ ( 0 , 1 / 2 ) , and O ( τ min { α , H + α + γ − 1 } ) when H ∈ ( 1 / 2 , 1 ) . Here, τ denotes the time step size.
