The Edinburgh Companion to the Brontës and the Arts

    No full text
This chapter introduces the wider historical and cultural contexts of the Brontë family’s engagement with the arts, which include painting, drawing sculpture, music, literature, theatre, architecture, design and crafts. It demonstrates how this engagement permeated their creative work, leading to the development of an aesthetic sensibility which today is identified as recognisably ‘Brontëan’, an approach which privileges imaginative exploration and a heightened engagement with the workings of the interior life. The chapter demonstrates how the aesthetic discourses of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries informed the Brontës’ understanding of their cultural moment, helping to shape their development as writers and artists, focusing on Branwell’s portrait of his sisters in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The chapter also offers critical assessments of the influence of the arts on the family’s creative work, as well as the important role played by art in the heritage and tourism industries associated with the Brontës’ lives and legacies. This chapter highlights the book’s unique contribution to existing scholarship in Brontë studies. The Introduction also presents an overview of subsequent chapters, demonstrating how each contributor’s discussion relates to the book’s overall rationale and design.Unfunde

The Edinburgh Companion to the Brontës and the Arts

    No full text
The book is not available on ChesterRepThis book situates the life, work and legacies of the Brontë family in relation to the visual, musical, plastic and performing arts. The volume identifies and explores networks of influence and engagement between the Brontës’ creative practice and artistic precedents, the broader context of mid-Victorian aesthetics, and the politics and ethics of adaptation from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. It forms a significant contribution to Brontë studies and scholarship on Victorian women’s writing more broadly; and looks beyond and behind the myth of three sisters and their wayward brother isolated on the Yorkshire moors, locating their work at the heart of vital debates concerning ‘ways of seeing’ and representing the world and self, both in their present and in ours. The subject of the Brontës’ relation to the arts is approached broadly and inclusively, with chapters exploring: the influence of the arts on their creative practice; the representation of the arts in their work; the role played by the arts in the heritage, tourism and creative industries built upon their lives, images and reputations; the appropriation and adaptation of their life stories and work across a range of artistic genres and media.Unfunde

Using Voice Input to Control and Interact With a Narrative Video Game

    Get PDF
With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) over recent years, especially the breakthrough in technology that OpenAI achieved with the natural language generative model of ChatGPT, virtual assistants and voice interactive devices such as Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri, have become popular with the general public. This is due to their ease of use, accessibility, and ability to be used without physical interaction. When it comes to the video games industry, there have been attempts to implement voice input as a core mechanic, with various levels of success. Ultimately, voice input has been mostly used as a separate mechanic or as an alternative to traditional input methods. This project will investigate different methods of using voice input to control and interact with a narrative video game. The research will analyse which method is most effective in facilitating player control of the game and identify challenges related to implementation. This paper also includes a work-in-progress demonstration of a voice-activated game made in Unreal Engine.Unfunde

Neurodiverse inclusive social work education considered through a student partnership

© 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. To improve inclusion in one social work teaching department, a ‘Students-as-Partners’ project employed four social work students with lived experience of neurodiversity to work in partnership with staff on pedagogical design. The student partners’ role was to evaluate teaching and learning through neurodivergent lenses and co-design strategies to enhance provision. Higher education can often adopt an individualised, adaptive approach to difference (Clouder et al., 2020), rather than a social approach to inclusion where whole courses and environments are designed with neurotypical and neurodivergent learners in mind. ‘Neurodiversity’ offers social work education a constructive new paradigm for understanding learning experiences and for considering individuals’ strengths alongside challenges (Long, 2023). Using a reflective, critical storytelling approach (Beresford, 2016), this article weaves published research findings with the experiences of three student partners and one staff partner, to reflect on and analyse a Students-as-Partners neurodiversity pilot. We conclude that educational designs which actively include the perspectives and ideas of neurodivergent students can deepen understanding of individual challenges and strengths and facilitate the co-creation of more inclusive teaching and assessment strategies.University of Chester Access and Participation tea

Impact of Different Anti-Hyperglycaemic Treatments on Bone Turnover Markers and Bone Mineral Density in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
© 2024 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Diabetic bone disease (DBD) is a frequent complication in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), characterised by altered bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover marker (BTMs) levels. The impact of different anti-diabetic medications on the skeleton remains unclear, and studies have reported conflicting results; thus, the need for a comprehensive systematic review is of paramount importance. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and the Cochrane Library. The primary outcomes assessed were changes in BMD in relation to different anatomical sites and BTMs, including mainly P1NP and CTX as well as OPG, OCN, B-ALP and RANK-L. Risk of bias was evaluated using the JADAD score. The meta-analysis of 19 randomised controlled trials comprising 4914 patients showed that anti-diabetic medications overall increased BMD at the lumbar spine (SMD: 0.93, 95% CI [0.13, 1.73], p = 0.02), femoral neck (SMD: 1.10, 95% CI [0.47, 1.74], p = 0.0007) and in total hip (SMD: 0.33, 95% CI [−0.25, 0.92], p = 0.27) in comparison with placebo, but when compared with metformin, the overall effect favoured metformin over other treatments (SMD: −0.23, 95% CI [−0.39, −0.07], p = 0.004). GLP-1 receptor agonists and insulin analogues seem to improve BMD compared to placebo, while SGLT2 inhibitors and thiazolidinediones (TZDs) showed no significant effect, although studies’ number cannot lead to safe conclusions. For BTMs, TZDs significantly increased P1NP levels compared to placebo. However, no significant differences were observed for CTX, B-ALP, OCN, OPG, and RANK-L between anti-diabetic drugs and metformin or placebo. High heterogeneity and diverse follow-up durations among studies were evident, which obscures the validity of the results. This review highlights the variable effects of anti-diabetic drugs on DBD in T2DM patients, emphasising the need for long-term trials with robust designs to better understand these relationships and inform clinical decisions.University of Chester QRFun

The Defying Expectations exhibition at the Brontë Parsonage Museum: a reflection on contemporary curatorial practices

    Get PDF
© 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis GroupThis article reflects on the curatorial practices in the Brontë Parsonage Museum’s 2022 Defying Expectations costume exhibition, to assess its strengths and weaknesses and to identify opportunities for similar exhibitions to be launched and improved upon in the future. The Defying Expectations exhibition included interactive art installations, recreations and illustrative reconstructions alongside traditional display methods, and this article evaluates the effectiveness of such a blended approach. Written from the perspective of a museum professional, the article considers how the exhibition developed contemporary curatorial practices and its legacy. Drawing on heritage studies and curatorship, the article juxtaposes information gleaned from literary analysis with an assessment of material culture. It assesses the exhibition’s aim of reinterpreting Brontë’s reputation as choosing plain and practical clothing by foregrounding her interest in colourful and multicultural textiles, which raises questions of individual, local and national identity as well as regarding the effects of colonisation.Unfunde
