The Contributions of Positive Outgroup and Negative Ingroup Evaluation to Implicit Bias Favoring Outgroups

    No full text
In an initial set of studies, we investigated the contributions of positive and negative evaluations to implicit biases in favor of outgroups. Among members of lower-status groups (i.e., Asian, Black, older, gay and lesbian people), their outgroup favorability biases reflected positive evaluations of the higher-status outgroup more than negative evaluations of their ingroup. Among members of higher-status groups (i.e., White, younger, straight), their outgroup favorability biases reflected a more mixed pattern of positive and negative evaluations. In a separate set of analyses, we also investigated the contributions of positive and negative evaluations to implicit biases in favor of ingroups. We found that ingroup favorability biases reflected positive evaluations of ingroups more than negative evaluations of outgroups – and this was true for members of higher-status groups as well as for members of lower-status groups. In the present research, we seek to replicate our initial findings in new samples, using different analytic methods, and including additional measures of bias

The effects of food environment framing on weight stigma, policy support, and food industry beliefs

    No full text
The aim of our current study is to investigate the effects of various messaging about the food environment on individual beliefs about the food industry, support for obesity-related policies, and weight stigma by comparing the effects of industry-focused messaging,individually-focused messaging, food addiction-focused messaging, and general health consequence-focused messaging. This study seeks to add to the literature considering the most effective public health campaigns regarding obesity and HP foods by testing different interventions that had been previously tested when exposing the tobacco industry. This is important because there has been little research investigating the effects of food addiction frameworks in counter-industry efforts against the highly-processed food industry. This study will consist of an online survey created with UM Qualtrics that is administered anonymously through Prime Panels, a participant recruitment platform. Participants will be located within the United States, ranging from ages 18 to 25. Our proposed sample size is approximately 1,500. Participants will be randomly assigned a vignette discussing the current food environment with messaging framing industry manipulation tactics and food addiction, industry manipulation tactics and the health consequences of highly-processed food consumption, individual responsibility and food addiction, individual responsibility and health consequences of highly-processed food consumption, or a control condition

Chronic pain and opioid use at primary care using big data - a scoping review

    No full text
This is a preregistration of a protocol for a scoping review on chronic pain and opioid use at primary care using big data. The aim of the scoping review is to describe primary care patient population characteristics using big data, investigating characteristics of those with chronic pain and their opioid prescription patterns. The objectives are to investigate chronic pain patients who receive opioid prescriptions for pain management, the settings in which these chronic pain patients are managed, the datasets where the outcomes are reported, and to use the information for future research and strategies

Student well-being: A systematic review of the literature from 1995–2022

    No full text
School systems have recognized the importance of fostering not only academic achievement but also skills of well-being in order to meet the challenges of 21st century education by building a strong foundation for students’ healthy development and effective learning. The term student well-being is used in different branches such as health science, positive psychology, and psychology of well-being, resulting in a variety of different definitions and operationalizations as well as diverse correlates, predictors, and outcomes of the multidimensional construct of student well-being. Therefore, a systematic review of the definitions and empirical evidence published from 1995 until 2022 will be conducted. The systematic review aims to contribute to a broader understanding of the construct of student well-being and to fill the gap between the need to support student well-being and evidence-based knowledge about effective student well-being enhancing strategies
