    Evaluation of white grain maize varieties for growth, yield and yield components

    Maize (Zea mays L.)  is one of the most commonly cultivated crop after rice in Nepal. The present study was done to evaluate and recommend the best performing white maize genotypes in mid hill region of Nepal. This study was conducted at research field of Kavre, Nepal during the rainy season of 2019. Five white maize genotypes were evaluated in randomized complete block design with four replications where Deuti used as standard check. Ear and plant height of plant, days to 50% silking and tasseling, count of leaf above and below main cob, total number of leaf, cob length, cob diameter, kernel rows per cob, kernels count per row, thousand kernels weight, shelling and sterility percentage, stay green and grain yield parameters were observed. Deuti and DMH-7314 had good stay green and husk cover rating. Plant height (282.6 cm) and ear height (162.4 cm) was more in HB-008. Number of kernels per row was more in HB-008 (36.5) and HB-007 (36.5) and thousand kernel weights was more in DMH-7314 (386.3 g) followed by Deuti (353.9 g). DMH-7314 was late in tasseling (86 days) and silking (89 days) but shelling percentage was lowest in DMH-7314 (70.8) than other varieties. Analysis of variance reveled that genotype HB-008 (9.70 t/ha) as compared to standard check Deuti (7.80 t/ha). Thus genotype HB-008 perform better in mid hill region of Kavre, Nepal

    Evaluation of chemical pesticides for the management of Top Borer (Scirpophaga excerptalis Walker) in sugarcane

    An experiment was conducted at research field of National Sugarcane Research Program, Jeetpur, Nepal in 2014 and 2016, to evaluate the efficacy of chemical insecticides against sugarcane top borer (Scirpophaga excerptalis Walker). Nine different treatments viz. Chlorantraniliprole 0.4 G, Cartap hydrochloride 4 G, Fipronil 0.3 G, Carbofuran 3 G (standard check) as soil application and foliar spray of Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC, Thiodicarp 75 WP, Spinosad 45 SC, Chlorpyrifos 20 EC (standard check) and one untreated check (control) were used in randomized complete block design with three replications. The top borer susceptible genotype, Co 0238 was planted on February and single application of these insecticides was done on July at brood stage against top borers. The lowest 10.65 and 12.43, 13.68, 14.61, 14.15 percentage of top borer damage was found in foliar application of Chlorantraniliprole @ 35g a.i. /ha followed by Spinosad @ 125g a.i. /ha and soil application of Cartap hydrochloride @ 1500g a.i /ha and foliar application of Thiodicarp @ 1500g a.i. /ha and Fipronil @ 100g a.i. /ha. The infestation percentage reduction over control was found highest in Chlorantraniliprole (69.40%) followed by Spinosad (64.29%) treated plots. Furthermore, the cane yield was highest in Chlorantraniliprole (92.30 mt/ha) and Spinosad (90.06 mt/ha) treated plots than that of other insecticide treated plots. The number of millable canes and cane diameter in the plots among the treatment was found non-significant. Based on the infestation reduction rate, foliar application of the chemical insecticide (Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC and Spinosad 45 SC) could be better option for chemical management of sugarcane top borer. &nbsp

    Effect of different levels of nitrogen on growth and yield of hybrid maize (Zea mays L.) varieties

    Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is considered as one of the most important factors affecting growth and grain yield of hybrid maize. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different rates of nitrogen and varieties on growth and yield of hybrid maize in Lamahi Municipality, Dang, Nepal from June to October, 2019. Three levels of hybrid maize varieties (10V10, Rajkumar F1 and NMH-731) and four levels of nitrogen (160, 180, 200 and 220 kg N ha-1) were evaluated using two factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that grain yield and yield attributing traits of hybrid maize varieties increased with the increasing level of nitrogen from 160 to 220 kg ha-1. The application of nitrogen @ 220 kg N ha-1 produced the highest grain yield (10.07 t ha-1), cob length (16.33 cm), no of rows per cob (14.97), no of grains per row (33.37), cob diameter (4.54), thousand grain weight (276.77 g), stover yield (12.91 t ha-1), biological yield (23.00 t ha-1), harvest index (43.80), gross return (NRs. 208940 ha-1), net return (NRs.104488 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.001). The hybrid maize variety 10V10 produced the highest grain yield (9.35 t ha-1), net returns (NRs. 91740.66 ha-1) and B:C ratio (1.91) accompanied by the highest cob length (16.25 cm), and as number of grains per row (32.35) as compared to other varieties. This study suggested that maize production can be maximized by cultivating hybrid maize variety 10V10 with the use of 220 kg N ha-1 in inner Terai region of Nepal

    Screening of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes for rust-resistance and assessment on prevalence and distribution of the rust diseases in wheat production fields

    Evaluation of 45 wheat genotypes was performed to quantify genetic responses to inoculation of rust pathogens in aqueous suspension at the early vegetative stage. The study was conducted in field conditions at Plant Pathology Division, Nepal Agricultural Research Council, Lalitpur, Nepal in winter, 2013. Results showed large variations of rust resistance on wheat genotypes. Thirty-six genotypes were susceptible to yellow rust (YR), 18 had high severity, 7 had moderate severity, 6 had low severity, 5 had trace reactions, while 9 were rust-resistant. Old varieties (Lerma-52, Kalayansona, RR-21, NL-30, HD-1982, UP-262, Lumbini, Vinayak, Vaskar, Nepal-297, Nepal-251, BL-1135, Annapurna-4, Achyut, Rohini, and BL-1473) had high severities of YR, but relatively recent cultivars had medium severities. YR was severe (100S) in genotypes HD-1982, Vaskar, Vijay, and Rohini followed by RR-21, NL-30, UP-262, Nepal-297, BL-1135, and Annapurna-4 (90S). The pipeline cultivars: Aditya, NL-971, BL-3503, BL-3623, NL-1008, NL-1064, Becard#1, and Chyakhura-1 had trace to moderate reactions of YR with low severity indices. But varieties Vijay and NL-1055 showed high severity of YR (100S and 80S, respectively). Overall, leaf rust (LR) was minor while stem rust (SR) developed in traces on a single genotype (Annapurna-1). A survey of wheat rusts across 66 production fields revealed the prevalence of YR and LR at high levels, but none on SR. The occurrence of LR was higher than YR; 48.48% vs 36.36% of assessed fields, respectively. YR was a primary concern of rust diseases with most fields under high severity (62.5%) and incidence (54.16%) levels. LR had low incidence and moderate severity levels. A considerable gap exists between an extension of such research outcomes and the producers, who demonstrated little know-how on wheat rusts and varieties. These results may support and enhance varietal selection, breeding programs, and effective management and control strategies against wheat rust diseases

    Evaluation of rice genotypes for growth, yield and yield components

    Twelve rice genotypes were evaluated under irrigated lowland and upland rainfed conditions in a randomized complete block design with three replications at Khumaltar, Lalitpur, Nepal in 2019. Data on plant height, panicle length, effective tillers per plant, fertile grain number per panicle and grain yield were taken. The variation was observed for plant height, panicle length, effective tillers per plant, fertile grain number per panicle among the evaluated rice genotypes. The rice genotype NR 11375-B-B-21 produced the highest grain yield (3974.75 kg/ha) followed by NR 11374-B-B-23 (3615.26 kg/ha) and NR 11145-B-B-B-6 (3597.56 kg/ha) under irrigated low land condition. Similarly, the rice genotypes, NR 11375-B-B-21 produced the highest grain yield (3837.15 kg/ha) followed by NR 11321-B-B-7-3 (3588.71 kg/ha) and NR 11305-B-B-1-3 (3292.36 kg/ha) under upland rainfed condition. The combined analysis showed that rice genotype NR 11375-B-B-21 produced the highest grain yield (3905.95 kg/ha) followed by NR 11374-B-B-23 (3494.63 kg/ha), and NR 11321-B-B-7-3 (3409.89 kg/ha) respectively. Thus, after evaluation of yield, two genotypes namely NR 11375-B-B-21, NR 11374-B-B-23, were selected as outstanding genotypes, which can be used as potential breeding materials for upland and low land environments of mid hills of Nepal

    Rice production in Chitwan district of Nepal: An analysis from economic and environmental perspectives

    Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the major staple food in the Nepalese context. Chitwan district of Nepal was purposively selected to analyze the rice production from the socio-economic and environmental perspective. A total of 100 rice growing farmers, 50 organic and 50 inorganic were selected as the sample for the purpose of the study using the simple random method of sampling. Primary data were collected through a pre-tested semi-structure interview schedule and key informant interviews; secondary data were collected reviewing related publications. Descriptive statistics, multiple regression and chi-square test were used for data analysis. The multiple regression revealed that the four explanatory variables included in the model: age of the household head, primary occupation of the household head, number of family members involved in agriculture and subsidy in inputs for rice farming were found to have positive and statistically significant effect on rice yield (P<0.01). Moreover, chi-square test revealed that the farming practices that contributes to climate change mitigation such as: minimum tillage practice (P<0.05), crop diversification (P<0.01), green manuring (P<0.01), agro forestry practice (P<0.05), incorporating crop residues (P<0.1), weed management practice (P<0.01) and pest management practice (P<0.01)were found to be well adopted by the organic rice farmers, in contrast, the farming practices of inorganic rice farmers were statistically and significantly different in this respect. Government should make such policy that could grave the attention of the Nepalese people towards organic agriculture; moreover, encouraging them to make it their primary occupation

    Modified atmosphere packaging of capsicum for extending shelf life under coolbot condition

    Capsicum is one of the high value vegetable crops in Nepal. Its demand in kitchen is increasing due to urbanization and increased awareness on its health benefit. Its commercial cultivation has been started in protected as well as open field conditions. It fetches higher price in market but has very short storage life under ordinary storage condition. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on extension of shelf-life of capsicum fruit. Fruit were harvested at full mature stage with smooth and shiny appearance from farmer\u27s field grown under protected condition at Chitwan, Nepal. The fruits were brought to postharvest laboratory of National Horticulture Research Centre, pre-cooled for 3-4 hours, cleaned with muslin cloth and packed in 25 micron Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) packaging with different number of pinhole sized perforations viz. without pinholes, eight pinholes, sixteen pinholes, twenty four pinholes and control (without MAP). The study was conducted in completely randomized block design with five treatments and four replications. Fruits were kept at coolbot storage (9.8+2 ºC, 86+5% RH) till 30 days and analyzed for various postharvest physical, chemical and physiological parameters at every 10, 20 and 30 days of storage. The result showed that LDPE packaging influenced on reduction of physiological loss in weight (PLW), spoilage loss, ascorbic acid content, TA, freshness, firmness and shelf life. The modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) without pinholes showed the minimum PWL (1.71%) and the optimum fruit freshness (4.76) but the spoilage loss was the maximum (14%). Among the packaging, MAP with 8 pinholes maintained majority of postharvest quality retention with reduced physiological loss in weight (4.15 %), freshness (4.5) and spoilage loss (2%)

    Evaluation of livestock’s hide and skin marketing in Adamawa State, Nigeria

    This study evaluated hide and skin marketing in Adamawa State, Nigeria, with the aim of describing the socioeconomic variables of the marketers, determining the marketing efficiency and major socioeconomic factors that influenced participation in the area. Purposive and simple random sampling methods were used in the selection of four large and small ruminant markets, and 120 hide and skin marketers, respectively. Descriptive statistics, Marketing Efficiency (ME) and regression analysis were employed in the analyses of data. Results show that all the marketers were males (100%) and married (66.67%) within middle-aged group. A larger proportion (40.00%) had secondary school education and fairly experienced in the business. The most popular (51.67%) channel of hide and skin marketing was producer-rural collector-urban collector-wholesaler-tanneries, with a very efficient marketing (178.52%). Further, the level of education and marketing experience of marketers and the average purchasing price of hide and skin were found to heavily influence the marketing output in the area. The major challenges experienced were insufficiency of capital (88.33%), multiple taxations on transit (71.66%) and quality deterioration (63.33%). It is recommended that institutions that intend to improve on hide and skin marketing in the State and areas with similar economic terrains should resolve the aspect of inadequacy of funds, minimise tax on products, and employ efficient extension services to tackle spoilage. &nbsp

    Economics of production and marketing of wheat in Rupandehi district of Nepal

    Wheat is the third most important cereal crop of Nepal after rice and maize in terms of area. The study on profitability and marketing of wheat was conducted in the Rupandehi district in 2019. The household survey, focus group discussion, interview with the individual market actors such as input suppliers, producers, collectors, wholesalers, millers, and retailers in selected clusters was carried out. The study showed that the Benefit-Cost Ratio of wheat production (BCR) was 1.87. The marketing margins at three different levels of marketing farm-wholesale, wholesale-retail, and farm-retail were also analyzed. The farm-retail marketing margin was found highest (31.42%) and the farm-wholesale marketing margins were less (15.78%). The producers’ share in consumer price was 68.5% and the total gross margin was 56.36%.  This showed if value-added activities are absent in the chain, the shorter chain can provide a higher margin to farmers by bypassing the intermediaries

    Efficacy of commercial insecticides for cowpea pod borer (Maruca vitrata F.) management in Pokhara, Nepal

    Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) is a major grain legume used as vegetables and pulses. Among the several insect pest of cowpea, spotted pod borer is one of the most destructive pest. To evaluate the available chemical pesticides for pod borer management, a set of field experiments on cowpea variety Malepatan-1 were conducted at Horticulture Research Station, Malepatan, Pokhara in years 2019 and 2020. The experiments were laid out in Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) having seven  treatments viz.Flubendiamide 39.35 % SC @ 0.3 mL/L, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 % SC @ 0.2 mL/L, Emamectin benzoate 5 % SG @0.3 g/L, Spinosad 45 % SC @0.3 mL/L, Bacillus thuringiensis Kurstaki @2g/L, Azadirechtin 0.03%@ 5mL/L and Control with four replications. Flubendiamide 39.35 % SC @ 0.3 mL/L and Emamectin benzoate 5 % SG @0.3 g/L were found the most effective insecticides in lowering cowpea flower and pod damage with highest benefit cost ratio; however, considering environment, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 % SC @ 0.2 mL/L and Spinosad 45 % SC @0.3 mL/L being next effective treatments could be viable option to manage spotted pod borer in cowpea production.  &nbsp
