A Systematic Review and Analysis of Brucella Endocarditis Cases

    No full text
Benli, Aysun/0000-0003-0679-0990Endocarditis is the most common cause of death from brucellosis. The information used to guide the management of cases with Brucella endocarditis has relied on case reports/ series. Risk factors related to death and other adverse outcomes in patients with Brucella endocarditis were identified by an individual-patient data analysis of all reported Brucella endocarditis cases in the literature. The keywords "Bruce" and "endocard" were used to search articles published until July 2022 on PubMed and ULAKBIM databases. Case reports/series containing patients with endocarditis caused by Brucella spp., aged >= 17 years, and with data on antimicrobial or surgical treatment were included in the study. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and treatment characteristics and outcomes of 273 cases from 86 eligible articles were recorded. It was found that male gender, a Wright serum tube agglutination (STA) titer of >= 1/1280 on admission, development of heart failure due to endocarditis were independent risk factors that increase mortality, while the usage of aminoglycoside and cardiac surgical intervention for endocarditis were factors reducing mortality. Including streptomycin or gentamicin in the treatment regimen may benefit patients with Brucella endocarditis. Valve surgery could be life-saving in patients with Brucella endocarditis. An STA titer of >= 1/1280, which probably reflects long-term and advanced disease, may be used as a marker for increased mortality. However, additional and more reliable studies are needed to define the most appropriate management approach in diagnosing and treating cases with Brucella endocarditis due to the low quality of the current evidence

    No full text
Objective: There are numerous factors that play a role in a student’s selection of a profession, including examinations that need to be passed before being admitted into a programme such as dentistry. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic characteristics of the students admitted to the Pamukkale University Faculty of Dentistry based on their Student Selection and Placement Examination score, to determine their reasons for entering dental school and to examine their expectations from the dental profession. Methods: We administered a questionnaire to the first-, second-, and third-year students of the Pamukkale University Faculty of Dentistry. The questionnaire collected the students’ gender, type of high school they graduated from, the region of Turkey they were from, their reasons for selecting dental school and their expectations about dentistry. Results: Overall, 69.5% of the students entered the faculty of dentistry voluntarily. In addition, 70.3% of the students stated that would still enter dental school if they were to take the placement examination again. The majority of students stated that it is important for a dentist to be helpful to people. Moreover, a significant proportion of the students planned to continue with dental specialisation after graduating from dental school. Conclusion: Willingly choosing to attend dental school and to become a dentist would help students cope with the myriad challenges they will experience in their education and professional lives. In addition, the fact that students' financial gain expectations when they become dentists remain in the background will ensure that more attention is paid to professional ethics. © 2025, Ataturk Universitesi. Possible Drug-Drug Interactions Between Mesalamine and Tricyclic Antidepressants Through Cyp2d6 Metabolism - in Silico and in Vitro Analyses

    No full text
Mesalamine (mesalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid, 5-ASA) is an essential anti-inflammatory agent both used for therapy and as a remission control in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis (UC). Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are used to alleviate remaining symptoms in patients already receiving IBD therapy or with quiescent inflammation. The cytochrome P4502D6 enzyme is involved in the metabolism of TCAs. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the role of CYP2D6 in 5-ASA metabolism. Initially, in silico analysis involving the docking of 5-ASA to CYP2D6 and molecular dynamics simulations was conducted. Next, the rate of O-demethylation of a nonfluorescent probe 3-[2-(N,N-diethyl-N-methylammonium)-ethyl]-7-methoxy-4-methylcoumarin (AMMC) into a fluorescent metabolite AMHC (3-[2-(N,N-diethyl-N-methylammonium)ethyl]-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin) was optimized with baculosomes co-expressing human CYP2D6 and human P450 oxidoreductase (hCPR) to monitor CYP2D6 activity in a microtiter plate assay. The apparent Km and Vmax were found to be 1.30 μM and 32.68 pmol/min/mg of protein for the O-demethylation of AMMC to AMHC, and the reaction was linear for 40 min. Then, nonselective inhibition of CYP2D6 activity with various concentrations of 5-ASA was detected. Finally, the conversion of AMMC to metabolites was analyzed by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS spectrometry, and none were identified. Thus, this study suggests that concurrent use of mesalamine with TCA may lead to adverse effects, and CYP2D6 genotyping should be routinely performed on these patients to eliminate possible threats. © 2025. No full text
This study investigated the color stability and surface roughness of universal chromatic resin-based composites (RBCs) after immersion in detox juices. One hundred seventy-six disc-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were prepared using four universal chromatic RBCs: NeoSpectra ST (NS), Omnichroma (OM), Charisma Topaz One (CO), and G-ae nial Universal Injectable (GI). Specimens of each material were randomly divided into four subgroups (n=11) and immersed in either the assigned detox juices (red, green, or yellow) or distilled water (control). Color and surface roughness measurements were taken at baseline, 15 and 30 days of immersion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the surface topography of the composites. The color change [CIEDE2000 (Delta E00)] and surface roughness (Ra) values were analyzed using generalized linear models and multiple comparison tests with Bonferroni correction. Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman rank correlation test. The main variable effects of "composite and immersion media" were significant for both color change and surface roughness parameters (p0.001). Additionally, the main effect of the "evaluation period" was significant only for surface roughness (p=0.001). The highest discoloration occurred in the GI group immersed in a red beverage, while the CO group immersed in yellow beverage had the highest Ra values. In SEM analysis, OM demonstrated a more homogeneous filler structure with clearly visible nano-spherical fillers and nanoclusters, contributing to its superior smoothness. Conversely, a significant increase in rough areas was observed, especially in NS exposed to the green beverage and CO exposed to the yellow beverage, after 30 days. While the immersion of resin composites in detox juices induced an acceptable color alteration except for OM and GI groups immersed in the red beverage, all tested materials exhibited clinically admissible results regarding surface roughness

Objective: To evaluate the anxiety and depression levels and the factors affecting them in the patients who applied to the Prosthodontics Clinic during the end of the pandemic process with the ‘Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)’. Methods: To determine the symptoms of anxiety and depression, probable cause questions and the “Turkish version of the HADS” were applied to the volunteers who applied to the Prosthodontics Clinic. In the study, independent groups t- and one-way ANOVA tests were used to compare the data according to the groups, the Chi-square test was used for the relationships between group variables, and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors affecting anxiety and depression. Results: A total of 194 volunteers (96 male, 98 female) were included in the study. Of the participants, anxiety was detected in 42.3%, depression was detected in 58.8%, and the HADS average was measured as 15.97 ± 7.66. In the depression score classification, the difference between the depression scores of nonsmoking participants (7.8 ± 4.03) and smokers (9.07 ± 3.36) was found to be statistically significant (p = 0.036). Applying to the prosthodontics clinic during the period when pandemic measures were reduced (OR = 2.158) and the possibility of transmitting COVID-19 to relatives (OR = 1.816), and removing the mask during examination and treatment (OR = 2.245) were factors that increased the risk of anxiety. Applying to the prosthodontics clinic (OR = 2.757), the possibility of transmitting COVID-19 to relatives (OR = 1.653) were factors that increased the risk of depression in participants. Conclusion: In the third year of the pandemic, we can assume that patients who have not had COVID-19 and were smokers who applied to the prosthodontics clinic are more prone to depression. Also, it can be said that application to the prosthodontics clinic during this period and the worrying about transmitting COVID-19 to relatives are both anxiety and depression-increasing factors. Removing the mask during examination and treatment is an anxiety-increasing factor. Copyright © 2025 Hatice Lamia Elif Sagesen et al. Investigating the Chemical Composition and Antifungal Effect of Cinnamomum Cassia Essential Oil Against Saccharomyces Cerevisiae and Acremonium Sp

    No full text
Essential oils are promising, safe, and eco-friendly alternatives to chemical fungicides. This study aimed to develop an effective biological control agent using Cinnamomum cassia essential oil (CCEO) as potential fungicidal agent against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acremonium sp, both isolated from natural orange juice. The yield, chemical composition and antifungal activity of CCEO were evaluated. The essential oil was extracted via hydro-distillation, and its composition was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antifungal activity was assessed using the disk diffusion agar method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were determined using microdilution methods. The extraction yield was 2.8%. (E)-cinnamaldehyde was identified as the major compound (37.72%). Inhibition zones ranged from 51 mm to 80 mm against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and from 75 mm to 90 mm against Acremonium sp. Equal MIC and MFC values were recorded for both fungal strains: MIC = MFC = 6.25% against Saccharomyces cerevisiae and MIC = MFC = 3.125% against Acremonium sp. These findings demonstrate for the first time that CCEO could be a promising antifungal agent against the two primary fungal contaminants of fruit products, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acremonium sp.RUDN University Scientific Projects Grant System [202787-2-000]This Publication has been supported by the RUDN University Scientific Projects Grant System, Project No. 202787-2-000

Κ-Deformed Bosonic Oscillators: Algebra, Interpolating Statistics, Condensation and Debye Crystal Model

    No full text
We introduce a specific deformed Bose gas model, whose underlying quasiparticle algebra is related to the kappa-deformed bosonic oscillator algebra. We then develop the statistical distribution function of a gas model of the kappa-deformed bosons containing finite and infinite dimensional cases. We investigate interpolating statistics behavior of this deformed model and apply it to lattice oscillations via the Debye crystal model. The effect of the deformation parameter kappa onto the low-temperature behavior of the model specific heat is discussed and is compared with the results of both the standard phonon gas and the ones with the Tsallis non-extensive statistics. Another application is carried out onto the Bose-like condensation of this deformed model and the conditions under which the kappa-deformed boson condensation would occur in such a system are discussed. It is shown that the critical temperature of the kappa-deformed boson gas with the infinite dimensional case is higher than that of the ideal Bose gas, while it has lower values than those of the ideal Bose gas for the finite dimensional case. We consider that the results obtained in this work may provide much physical insight into further studies on strongly correlated quantum materials as well as interacting theories of bosons including collective excitations, where unconventional quantum statistics might have an important role

Aim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between psychological resilience, ruminative thoughts and spiritual well-being of individuals diagnosed with cancer. Background: Cancer, which can cause fear, anger and future anxiety in individuals from the moment of diagnosis, is a disease that individuals can associate with death, pain, and suffering. Design: A descriptive and correlational research design was employed. Methods: The study sample consisted of 382 patients receiving outpatient treatment at an oncology center affiliated with a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, Ruminative Reactions Scale, Psychological Resilience Scale, and FACIT-Sp Spiritual Well-Being Scale. We evaluated the data via descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analyses. Results: The resilience score of the participants was 52.48 +/- 6.96, the ruminative reactions score was 44.26 +/- 15.11, and the FACIT-Sp total score was 38.97 +/- 8.23. In the study, there was a moderate and statistically significant positive relationship between the mean psychological resilience score and the mean scores of FACIT-Sp on the meaning, FACIT-Sp peace, FACIT-Sp faith sub-dimensions, and the total scale of FACIT-Sp (p 0.05). Also, a moderate and statistically significant negative relationship existed between the mean psychological resilience and the ruminative response scores (p 0.05). Conclusion: Participants' psychological resilience was slightly higher than moderate, their ruminative thoughts were moderate, and their spiritual well-being was high. In addition, there was a relationship between psychological resilience, ruminative reactions, and spiritual well-being. Relevance to Clinical Practice: They may be important for nurses to plan and implement interventions that will reduce patients' ruminative thinking and increase their spiritual well-being and resilience. Therefore, the results obtained in this study may help nursing care be more effective. Reporting Method: The reporting of the results of the study was conducted in accordance with the STROBE guidelines
