The effect of single and combined use of base isolator and fluid viscous damper on seismic performance in a conventional RC building with torsional irregularity
Ozer, Esra/0000-0002-7778-0119This study investigates the effects of fluid viscous damper (FVD), lead rubber bearing (LRB) and friction pendulum slider (FPS) used both separately and in combination on seismic performance of a mid-rise reinforced concrete building with torsional irregularity. Three earthquake levels were used corresponding to frequent, design and rare earthquake ground motions. 528 different bi-directional nonlinear history analyses of 3-D 5-story building models were performed. Each earthquake level was represented using 11 spectrum-compatible ground motion record pairs. Nonlinear behavior of structural members, base isolators and fluid viscous dampers was considered in the models with torsional irregularity. The roof drift ratios, inter story drift ratios, absolute acceleration profiles and torsion irregularity coefficient values and plastic damage states were compared for seismic performance evaluation. When passive systems were added to the model, seismic performances improved as expected and torsional irregularity was largely eliminated compared to the fixed-base model. Although using only FVD improved seismic performance less than using only base isolators, it should be noted that FVDs used in different numbers and configurations may change the results. The findings underscore the benefits of combined damping systems, particularly FPS and FVD in mitigating torsional effects and enhancing overall structural performance. Compared to the fixed-base model, RDR, IDR and maximum acceleration demands in this model decreased at least by 91.2 %, 74.7 % and 80.3 %, respectively. Besides, it was concluded that using a limited number of ground motion records may lead to misleading results
Piaget’in bilişsel gelişim kuramına dayalı beslenme eğitiminin okul öncesi çocuklarda besin tüketimi, beslenme ve yeme davranışına etkisi: mix metod çalışma
Çalışma sonucunda okul öncesi çocuklara Piaget’nin bilişsel gelişim kuramı kullanılarak verilen beslenme eğitiminin çocukların besin tüketimini ve beslenme davranışını olumlu yönde etkilediği ancak yeme davranışı üzerinde herhangi değişiklik oluşturmadığı görülmüştürThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nutrition education given to preschool children using Piaget's cognitive development theory on food consumption, nutritionbehavior, and the eating behavior of children. The research is a mixed-method study in which qualitative and quantitative research methods are used. In the first phase of the study, a quasi-experimental research design based on pre-test and post-test was used. The sample of the study consisted of 238 preschool children and their mothers in the experimental (n=127) and control (n=111) groups in kindergartens affiliated with Uşak Provincial Directorate of National Education. The experimental group received six sessions of nutrition education. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Food Consumption Frequency Questionnaire (FFCQ), Nutrition Behaviour Scale (NBS), and Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ). Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon test method, and Pearson-χ2 cross-tabulations were used to analyze the first stage data, and ‘Spearman correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between two quantitative variables that did not have a normal distribution. In the second stage of the study, the focus group interview method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used, and the sample consisted of mothers (n=18) of children who received nutrition education using Piaget's cognitive development theory. The data of the mothers were collected using a semi-structured interview form, and the qualitative data were evaluated by content analysis method. In the quasi-experimental study, positive changes were observed in the consumption rates of milk, fruit, vegetables, legumes, cereals, and meat groups in the experimental group compared to the control group after nutrition education. After the intervention, while there was no statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test NBS scores of the control group, the post-test NBS scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the pre-test. After the intervention, it was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of pre-test and post-test CBEQ scores of food responsiveness, emotional overeating, enjoyment of food1, desire to drink, satiety responsiveness, and fussiness. In the qualitative research, which is the second stage of the study, three themes were determined ‘the effect of education on a child's food consumption’, ‘the effect of education on a child's feeding behavior’ and ‘the effect of education on child's eating behavior’ after qualitative interviews with mothers after the training. As a result of the study, it was seen that nutrition education given to preschool children using Piaget's cognitive development theory positively affected children's food consumption and nutrition behavior but did not change eating behavior

Effects of quercetin on adipokine profile in fructose-induced metabolic syndrome;
Purpose: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health condition characterized by obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study aimed to assess the effects of quercetin, a natural flavonoid on MetS induced by fructose in Sprague Dawley rats. Materials and methods: The rats, aged 8-10 weeks, were divided into 4 groups: control (C) group, metabolic syndrome (MetS) group, control+quercetin (C+Q) group, and metabolic syndrome+quercetin (MetS+Q) group. The MetS groups received a 20% fructose solution in drinking water for a duration of 10 weeks. For the last 4 weeks of the study, rats in the Q groups were administered 50 mg/kg/body weight quercetin. After 10 weeks, serum samples were tested using ELISA for Triglycerides (TG), High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), fasting insulin, resistin, (Interleukin 6) IL6, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), leptin, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and, adiponectin (ADP). The body weights, Lee index and HOMA-IR scores were also measured. Results: Fructose-fed rats showed significant increases in body weight, Lee index, HOMA-IR scores and, fasting insulin with significant decrease in HDL compared to controls. In MetS group, ADP levels were significantly lower compared to control group. In MetS+Q group, there was a tendency for reduced levels of resistin, IL-6, and leptin compared to the untreated MetS group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that quercetin may be beneficial in managing MetS, though further research is needed to explore its mechanisms and effectiveness. © 2025, Pamukkale University. Normal Faulting and Its Role in the Drainage Divide Migration in the Karıncalıdağ Region, Menderes Massif, Western Türkiye
Drainage divide migration refers to the shifting boundaries between adjacent drainage basins over time, driven by processes such as tectonic uplift, differential erosion, stream capture, and lithological variations. This phenomenon has a significant impact on water flow patterns and basin extents, serving as an indicator of the landscape's response to active tectonic forces. One of the key drivers of divide migration is asymmetric uplift, which causes divides to shift from areas of lower uplift to regions experiencing higher uplift. Drainage divides are inherently dynamic, evolving over time as drainage networks develop and adjust to changing conditions. This study focuses on the migration of the main drainage divide along Kar ; imath;ncal ; imath;da ; gbreve;, located between Bozdo ; gbreve;an and Karacasu. It employs geomorphic analyses using metrics such as the normalized steepness index (ksn), Chi (chi), and Gilbert metrics. The main divide is categorized into four segments (D1-D4), with the Karacasu Fault, situated along the mountain's north-eastern boundary, identified as the primary factor influencing divide dynamics. Secondary factors include the relatively low elevation of Kar ; imath;ncal ; imath;da ; gbreve;, uniform lithology, and consistent rainfall patterns across the region. The results indicate that the main divide is currently stable, suggesting a balance between uplift and erosion. However, higher chi values in the D4 segment suggest that future erosion may dominate, potentially causing the divide to migrate toward the Bozdo ; gbreve;an Basin. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of drainage divides and the complex interplay of tectonic, erosional, and lithological processes that shape their evolution. Continued monitoring and advanced geomorphic analysis are essential for understanding the long-term stability of the divide and its response to future tectonic activity and erosional modifications
Human Anti-Apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-Xl Proteins Protect Yeast Cells From Aging Induced Oxidative Stress
Aging is a degenerative, biological, and time-dependent process that affects all organisms. Yeast aging is a physiological phenomenon characterized by the progressive transformation of yeast cells, resulting in modifications to their viability and vitality. Aging in yeast cells is comparable to that in higher organisms in some respects; however, due to their straightforward and well-characterized genetic makeup, these cells present unique advantages when it comes to researching the aging process. Here, we assessed the impact of human anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins on aging using a yeast model. The findings clearly showed that these proteins exhibited remarkable anti-aging properties in yeast cells. Our data indicate that the presence of both proteins enhanced the reproductive survival of aging cells, likely by effecting the components functioning as both pro- and anti-oxidants, depending on the stage of yeast cell lifespan. Both proteins partially protected yeast cells from aging-related morphological deformations and cellular damage during the aging period. In particular, Bcl-xL expressing yeast cells reached the maximum activity levels for almost all of the major antioxidant enzymes and the total antioxidant status on the 8th day of lifespan and could provide effective protection at the latest stage of the investigated aging period. The chemometric data analysis of IR spectra confirmed the findings of the morphological and biochemical analyses. In this regard, specifically, understanding the mechanism of action on the cellular redox state of Bcl-xL in yeast may facilitate comprehension of its indirect antioxidant function in higher eukaryotes.
Grup I (oda havası, kontrol grubu, n=8), Grup II (HAH modeli, n=8), Grup III (profilaksi plasebo grubu, HAH+1.-6. günler subkutan salin uygulandı, n=8), Grup IV (profilaksi tedavi grubu, HAH+1.-6. günler subkutan anne sütü eksozomu uygulandı, n=8), Grup V (plasebo tedavi grubu, HAH+7.-11. günler subkutan salin uygulandı, n=8), Grup VI (tedavi grubu, HAH+7.-11. günler anne sütü eksozomu uygulandı, n=8).
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), which is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality affecting premature infants, has no proven treatment or preventive strategy. In this study, we planned to investigate the histopathologic and biochemical effects of subcutaneous breast milk exosome in the lungs of neonatal rats in which BPD was induced by hyperoxic lung injury (HLI). Sprague-Dawley rat pups in which HLI was induced were exposed to hyperoxia (oxygen concentration 85%) in a closed space made of plexiglass from postnatal day one to postnatal day seven. Oxygen concentration was checked twice a day (anesthetic gas monitor, Drager, 1996) and humidity was kept between 60-80%. Carbon dioxide was removed from the environment with soda-lime.
Rat pups were divided into six groups of eight in each. Group I (room air, control group, n=8), Group II (HLI model, n=8), Group III (prophylaxis placebo group, HLI+1.-6. days subcutaneous saline administered, n=8), Group IV (prophylaxis treatment group, HLI+1.-6. days, subcutaneous breast milk exosome administered n=8), Group V (placebo treatment group, HLI+7.-11. days, subcutaneous saline administered, n=8), Group VI (treatment group, HLI+7.-11. days, subcutaneous breast milk exosome administered, n=8). Groups I, II, III and IV were euthanized on postnatal day 7, and groups V and VI on postnatal day 11. After euthanasia, alveolar surface area score, fibrosis and smooth muscle actin score were evaluated in the right lung tissue samples of the rats. Left lung tissue samples were analyzed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant capacity (TOC) levels with commercial ELISA kits, and TAC and TOC levels in blood obtained by cardiac intervention with commercial ELISA kits were analyzed by antigen antibody reaction based sandwich immunoassay method in the Medical Biochemistry Research Laboratory.
Both lung alveolar surface area score and smooth muscle actin score were significantly higher in the HLI model compared to the control group (p0.05), but no difference was found in terms of fibrosis (p>0.05). TOC levels in both lung tissue and
XIV
blood were found to be higher in the HLI group compared to the control group, but not statistically significant. Prophylactic administration of breast milk exosome significantly decreased both lung alveolar surface area score and smooth muscle actin score compared to groups II, III, V and VI (p0.05) and no statistical difference was found between the prophylactic treatment group and the control group. In addition, prophylactic breast milk exosome administration significantly decreased lung tissue TOS levels compared to both HLI group and placebo group (p0.05).
In conclusion, in this experimental study in which hyperoxic lung injury and BPD model were established, it was shown that prophylactic breast milk exosome administration has a preventive effect on lung injury both histopathologically and biochemically. In recent years, especially early diagnosis and preventive strategies have been emphasized. In this respect, we think that our study is important in terms of prophylactic administration of breast milk exosome as a preventive treatment method to infants with a high probability of developing BPD, but more comprehensive and further studies are needed in this field
Coronary Artery Dissection in Drug-Coated Balloon Angioplasty: Incidence, Predictors, and Clinical Outcomes
Coronary dissection is a potential occurrence after lesion preparation for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Unlike stents, drug-coated balloons (DCBs) do not allow to cover dissections, thus demanding an assessment of their safety in this setting. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, predictors, and clinical outcomes of dissections occurring with DCB-based PCI for de novo coronary artery disease. Consecutive patients with de novo coronary artery disease who underwent PCI with intention-to-treat DCB angioplasty, with or without stent implantation, were retrospectively enrolled between 2018 and 2022 at 2 Italian centers. The decision whether to leave a dissection untreated or to proceed with bail-out stenting was based on a combined angiographic evaluation of Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction flow, residual minimal lumen diameter, and persistent extraluminal contrast hang-up. The primary end point at 2-year follow-up was target lesion failure, a composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction, and clinically driven target lesion revascularization. Among 522 DCB-treated lesions (466 patients), dissections were angiographically evident in 39.1% of cases, with 21.1% which underwent bail-out stenting and 78.9% left untreated. The incidence of bail-out stenting increased from type A to type E dissections (p for trend 0.001). Left anterior descending artery involvement (odds ratio 1.64, 95% confidence interval 1.12 to 2.39) was the strongest risk factors for dissection. Target lesion failure at 2 years occurred in 2.7% of lesions with untreated dissection compared with 4.2% of those with no dissection (log-rank p = 0.324). In conclusion, coronary dissections often complicate PCI with DCB angioplasty but do not correlate with increased risk of adverse events at midterm follow-up. (c) 2024 Elsevier Inc.
