Lapidei ornamentali della Sardegna. Manuale tecnico
TEFLU computational benchmark
This document summarises the results obtained for the WP2 (TEFLU benchmark) of the
ASCHLIM project. The main task of the benchmark was the assessment of the limitations of an eddy viscosity approach for HLM flows.
The test case set-up and boundary conditions are described, highlighting some problems coming from the definition of inlet boundary conditions for turbulence quantities. A summary of the approaches followed and of the results obtained by each participant is then reported, making reference to the full reports annexed in the Appendix. Some general conclusions are drawn, as a synthesis of the conclusions reached by every participant.
The main conclusion is that an approach based on the Reynolds analogy with Prt ∼ 1 is not able to simulate the correct temperature spreading rate of the TEFLU experiment, and, more in general, it is unsuitable for low Peclet number flows. Higher values of Prt, possibly as a function of local flow characteristics should be used, or higher order methods, not based on the Reynolds analogy.
The tendency of two-equation models to overestimate the velocity spreading-rate is confirmed, even if definite conclusions about this point can not be drawn, due to the uncertainties in the inlet turbulence conditions
Real-time haptic and visual simulation of bone dissection
Bone dissection is an important component of many surgical procedures. In this paper, we discuss a haptic and visual implementation of a bone-cutting burr that is being developed as a component of a training system for temporal bone surgery. We use a physically motivated model to describe the burr-bone interaction, which includes haptic force evaluation, the bone erosion process and the resulting debris. The current implementation, directly operating on a voxel discretization of patient-specific 3D CT and MRI data, is efficient enough to provide real-time feedback on a low-end multiprocessing PC platform.209-21
Development of the MPI version of the Ares code
This report describes the MPI parallelization of the combustion code Ares. First, the structure of the code is described, then a detailed analysis of the algorithms used to integrate the flow equation is carried out, with particular emphasis to the parallelization issues. An analysis of few possible alternative approaches is then followed by the description of the chosen approach. A preliminary validation of the parallel code completes the report. Thorough validation on 3D complex test cases will be presented in the next report

Inviscid supersonic minimum length nozzle design
An aerospace vehicle is accelerated by a propulsion system to a given velocity. A nozzle is used to extract the maximum thrust from high pressure exhaust gases generated by the propulsion system. The nozzle is responsible for providing the thrust necessary to successfully accomplish the mission while its design efficiency translates to greater payload and reduction in propellant consumption. Specifically, the nozzle is that portion of the engine beyond the combustion chamber. Typically, the combustion chamber is a constant area duct into which propellants are injected, mixed and burned. Its length is sufficient to complete the combustion of the propellant before the nozzle accelerates the gas products. The nozzle is said to begin at the point where the chamber diameter begins to decrease. This paper exploits the De Laval nozzle, a convergent divergent nozzle invented by Carl De Laval toward the end of the 19th century, and it tries to give a practical procedure to design the nozzle of minimum length. The basic assumption made is that the boundary layer thickness is small compared to the characteristic length, i.e. nozzle radius, so that the nozzle flow field can be treated as inviscid for the purpose of designing the aerodynamic lines. Ones the aerodynamic lines are determined, a correction can be made to account for the displacement thickness of the boundary layer. This second step of the designing procedure is not treated in here. This basic procedure has been applied successfully to many supersonic nozzle
Natural stone from Sardinia
This guide was created as part of the pilot project "Dimension Stone: Collection and Publishing of Information Resources for the Stone Sector", in which nine companies and the two main consortia of the Regional stone sector have taken part. The project aims at developing technical and promotional resources on Sardinian dimension stone products, so as to disseminate knowledge of their quality, properties and applications among potential buyers.
This guide provides an overview of the Regional stone industry, covering both quarrying and fabrication. It deals not only with granite and dimension limestone (marketed under the commercial name of Orosei Marbles) but also
the other types of valuable dimension stone that have recently come to the fore, such as basalt and pyroclastic rocks (Trachyte). This guide provides detailed descriptions, accompanied by a great number of photos, of standard stone products and their main applications, both traditional and innovative. It also contains information on installation systems and associated specifications
