    Defining a distributed agile methodology for an open source scenario

    In this paper we propose and describe an agile methodology for distributed development (MADD - Methodology for Agile Distributed Development). In particular, it's illustrated a set of best practices to apply in a distributed and agile context, chosen on the base of their impact software quality and team interoperation. Beyond the proposed methodology, we show the results of a survey that we submitted to various contributors of Open Source projects. The survey has been of support to the definition of the MADD, helping to more understand and estimate if, how and how much agile practices and values are already present in the OS world, that today represents one of the most emblematic examples of distributed development. The MADD methodology will be adopted on a software development project at the University of Cagliari (Italy), by a group of students that will work like an Open Source community

    Il tema dell’utilizzo di tecnologie innovative nel campo della didattica, catalizza da tempo l’attenzione della comunità scientifica. L’obiettivo è sinteticamente quello di offrire ai docenti nuovi strumenti atti a potenziare l’apprendimento degli studenti attraverso l’uso delle tecnologie. Si tratta quindi di progettare e realizzare soluzioni innovative che catturino l’interesse e la partecipazione di studenti e docenti. In questo contesto si è recentemente introdotto un nuovo elemento: la televisione digitale interattiva. La crescita e la diffusione di questo nuovo media ha condotto a nuove sfide, come quella di esplorare nuovi scenari d’utilizzo del mezzo televisivo. La narrativa a fini didattici può facilmente sfruttare quest’opportunità, proprio perché l’interattività offre agli spettatori la possibilità di cambiare la trama e, allo stesso tempo, all’autore quella di proporre più punti di vista della stessa storia. In quest’articolo è presentato un modello per l’utilizzo della narrativa interattiva a fini didattici sviluppata per la televisione digitale su piattaforma DVB-MHP [DVB, 2003].The growth of digital television has driven new challenges for broadcaster, content producers and software developers; interactivity, in particular, represents a clear shift in the paradigm of television applications. The art of interactive narrative can easily take this opportunity because interactivity allows viewers to change the plot and, at the same time, allows authors to present multiple perspectives of the story. The combination of interactive narrative with iTV could represent a further chance in the transition process from analogue to digital TV, where one of the critical needs is the development and delivering of new services and applications, able to attract new viewers. In this paper we propose a viable approach to develop interactive narrative with iTV technology. We present an idea to deliver television events, usually dramas or cartoons, having multiple and selectable plots, using the DVB-MHP platform.249-25

    Automatic calibration of CODESA-3D using PEST

    We describe here our experience in using the Model Independent Pameter ESTimation (PEST) free software tool [Doherty, 2002] to perform the automatic calibration of the COupled DEnsity-dependent variably SAturated flow and miscible transport (CODESA-3D) groundwater model [Gambolati et al., 1999]. Generally speaking, calibration of a model requires that a suitable method of spatial parameter characterization be defined in order to adjust model parameters until model outputs correspond well to specific laboratory and/or field measurements of the system which is simulated. In particular, for groundwater models the adjustable parameters are usually given by main hydrogeological properties (e.g. hydraulic permeability) and/or system excitations (e.g. abstraction volumes) while control data are represented by piezometric heads and/or salt concentrations measured in the field. Model calibration is a complex task. To perform it for a 3D fully-distributed physically-based hydrological model we need to build up a chain of interdependent software tools and data through the interdisciplinary expertise of GIS experts, modelers and hydrogeologists (Figure 1). The newly generated optimization model is comprised by the two pieces of software CODESA-3D and PEST with the latter wrapping the former up. The optimization model is not restricted in its use solely to the calibration of the groundwater model, through this tool modeler can gain valuable insight into the strengths and weakness of the input dataset allowing future data gathering to be undertaken in an optimal manner. In addition, lessons learned will be applicable also to the estimation of the degree of uncertainty associated with a given calibrated model prediction and to make decisions regarding appropriate levels of model complexity. In the following we discuss in detail the optimization model development and test using synthetic observations generated by the groundwater model itself

    Il Programma Integrato di Servizi (PIS) Export si è articolato in attività di animazione e di servizi reali diretti alle singole imprese manifatturiere (escluso agroalimentare). L'obiettivo è stato quello di agevolare i progetti di sviluppo o consolidamento dei mercati esteri delle PMI regionali. Sono stati presentati complessivamente 21 progetti export e 10 di questi sono stati approvati e implementati. I progetti sviluppati hanno consentito l'ingresso o il consolidamento della presenza in un mercato estero attraverso azioni di pianificazione strategica, lo studio di strumenti promozionali e di comunicazione, l'adeguamento dei prodotti a normative tecniche, la partecipazione a fiere e la progettazione di reti di vendita. Le imprese partecipanti al programma appartenevano al settore lapideo, al settore della produzione di dolci, paste fresche e prodotti da forno, al settore dell'artigianato tessile e orafo.     The data-crossing approach to locate point source pollution. The Portoscuso Case (Sardinia)

    È oggi comunemente riconosciuta l’esigenza di disporre di metodi e tecniche per la tutela e la gestione ottimale delle risorse idriche e per la valutazione dell’impatto ambientale dovuto a rischi naturali e alla presenza di sostanze contaminanti nei bacini idrologici e nelle acque sotterranee. Individuare le fonti localizzate e le modalità di immissione di inquinanti negli acquiferi, in riferimento a cause e tempi con cui l’inquinamento si è prodotto, è estremamente complesso. In questo lavoro viene descritto un sistema informatico integrato di modellizzazione formato da tecnologie GIS, generatori di griglia, simulatori numerici, e visualizzatori al fine di indagare l’impatto sulla qualità dell’acqua di fonti di inquinamento localizzate e diffuse e quantificare l’incertezza nell’applicazione del modello idrologico. La procedura permette, variando la posizione delle fonti di immissione degli inquinanti, di simulare le configurazioni che meglio riproducono le situazioni reali. Possono essere ipotizzate congiuntamente più fonti di immissione contemporanee supponendo diverse leggi di immissione. In particolare la procedura è stata applicata ad un caso di studio reale, per analizzare e incrociare i campi di inquinamento simulati coi valori di inquinamento misurati in situ al fine di individuare i punti possibili d’immissione dell’inquinante e il relativo tempo di permanenza. L’insieme delle configurazioni in grado di riprodurre il comportamento del sistema è stato poi discusso in termini probabilistici e statistici. Il sito in esame è un settore della piana di Portoscuso (Sardegna Sud Occidentale) inquinata da residui inorganici provenienti da industrie metallurgiche e chimiche.Tools and methodologies for optimal water resources management and for environmental impact analysis are needed in order to evaluate natural hazards, presence of contaminant sources in hydrological and groundwater basins etc.. Finding the location of point source pollution and understanding the dynamics of groundwater degradation, considering also the causes and the time of its occurrence, can be extremely complex. In this work, an integrated software system has been developed, herein described. This is a suit of partly in-house developed modules composed of GIS technologies, mesh generators, and hydrological and pre/post processing codes designed to predict the impact of a point source of pollution and to quantify the uncertainty due to the model application. Moreover the computational system has been personalized, for a case study, to integrate simulated contamination fields with in situ measurements to identify the location of point source pollution and the time of the spill. The procedure enable the user to identify the simulated scenario closest to the observed one. A probabilistic approach will be then performed to analyse the results. The resulting methodology was applied to the case of the Portoscuso Plain (South-West Sardinia) threatened by inorganic residuals from the industrial zone of Portoscuso

    3D functional models of monkey brain through elastic registration of histological sections

    In this paper we describe a method for the reconstruction and visualization of functional models of monkey brains. Models are built through the registration of high resolution images obtained from the scanning of histological sections with reference photos taken during the brain slicing. From the histological sections it is also possible to acquire specifically activated neuron coordinates introducing functional information in the model. Due to the specific nature of the images (texture information is useless and the sections could be deformed when they were cut and placed on glass) we solved the registration problem by extracting corresponding cerebral cortex borders (extracted with a snake algorithm), and computing from their deformation an image transform modeled as an affine deformation plus a non-linear field evaluated as an elastically constrained deformation minimizing contour distances. Registered images and contours are used then to build 3D models of specific brains by a software tool allowing the interactive visualization of cortical volumes together with the spatially referenced neurons classified and differently colored according to their functionalities

    Far Voxels: A Multiresolution Framework for Interactive Rendering of Huge Complex 3D Models on Commodity Graphics Platforms

    We present an efficient approach for end-to-end out-of-core construction and interactive inspection of very large arbitrary surface models. The method tightly integrates visibility culling and out-of-core data management with a level-of-detail framework. At preprocessing time, we generate a coarse volume hierarchy by binary space partitioning the input triangle soup. Leaf nodes partition the original data into chunks of a fixed maximum number of triangles, while inner nodes are discretized into a fixed number of cubical voxels. Each voxel contains a compact direction dependent approximation of the appearance of the associated volumetric subpart of the model when viewed from a distance. The approximation is constructed by a visibility aware algorithm that fits parametric shaders to samples obtained by casting rays against the full resolution dataset. At rendering time, the volumetric structure, maintained off-core, is refined and rendered in front-to-back order, exploiting vertex programs for GPU evaluation of view-dependent voxel representations, hardware occlusion queries for culling occluded subtrees, and asynchronous I/O for detecting and avoiding data access latencies. Since the granularity of the multiresolution structure is coarse, data management, traversal and occlusion culling cost is amortized over many graphics primitives. The efficiency and generality of the approach is demonstrated with the interactive rendering of extremely complex heterogeneous surface models on current commodity graphics platforms.878-885Pubblicat

    Haptic and visual simulation of bone dissection

    Tesi di dottorato: Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Facoltà di Ingegneria, Dipartiemnto di Ingegneria Meccanica, XV Ciclo di Dottorato in Progettazione Meccanica.In bone dissection virtual simulation, force restitution represents the key to realistically mimicking a patient--specific operating environment. The force is rendered using haptic devices controlled by parametrized mathematical models that represent the bone--burr contact. This dissertation presents and discusses a haptic simulation of a bone cutting burr, that it is being developed as a component of a training system for temporal bone surgery. A physically based model was used to describe the burr--bone interaction, including haptic forces evaluation, bone erosion process and resulting debris. The model was experimentally validated and calibrated by employing a custom experimental set--up consisting of a force--controlled robot arm holding a high--speed rotating tool and a contact force measuring apparatus. Psychophysical testing was also carried out to assess individual reaction to the haptic environment. The results suggest that the simulator is capable of rendering the basic material differences required for bone burring tasks. The current implementation, directly operating on a voxel discretization of patient-specific 3D CT and MR imaging data, is efficient enough to provide real--time haptic and visual feedback on a low--end multi--processing PC platformInedit
