    High-quality networked terrain rendering from compressed bitstreams

    We describe a compressed multiresolution representation and a client-server architecture for supporting interactive high quality remote visualization of very large textured planar and spherical terrains. Our approach incrementally updates a chunked level-of-detail BDAM hierarchy by using precomputed wavelet coefficient matrices decoded from a compressed bitstream originating from a thin server. The structure combines the aggressive compression rates of wavelet-based image representations with the ability to ensure overall geometric continuity for variable resolution views of planar and spherical terrains with no need for run-time stitching. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated on a large scale interactive remote visualization of global and local terrains on ADSL networks. A library implementing an early version of this work has been incorporated into a widely distributed geo-viewing system with tens of thousands of clients.37-4

    Pseudo-holographic device elicits rapid depth cues despite random-dot surface masking

    Experiments with random-dot masking demonstrate that, in the absence of cues mundanely available to 2-D displays (object occlusion, surface shading, perspective foreshortening, and texture gradients), Holografika's large-screen multi-projector video system (COHERENT-IST-FP6-510166) elicits useful stereoscopic and motion-parallax depth cues, and does so in under 2 s. We employed a simplified version of Julesz's (c. 1971) famous spiral ramp surface: a 3-layer cylindrical wedding-cake--via an openGL model that subjects viewed along its concentric axis. By adjusting its parameters, two sets of model-stimuli were rendered: one with a uniform large field of depth and one where the field was effectively flat. Each of eleven, pre-screened, subjects completed four experiments, each consisting of eight trials in a 2IFC design whereby they indicated in which interval they perceived the greatest field of depth. The experiments tested one-eye static, one-eye head-swaying, two-eye static, and two-eye head-swaying observation--in that order. Scores improved also in that order

    Il progetto Recupero dell'oro da rifiuti elettrici ed elettronici aveva come finalità la dissoluzione e il recupero selettivo dei metalli preziosi dai RAEE mediante attacchi chimici poco aggressivi ed eco-compatibili. Le classi di RAEE selezionate sono state: simcards, cartucce ink-jet, schede elettroniche. Le classi di reagenti selezionate sono state: ditiossammidi cicliche epta-atomiche; ditiossammidi lineari 1e e 2e; dialchil (o morfolin) tiuram disolfuro.     CRIMSON

    The CRIMSON project aims to research, develop and validate an innovative system using the Virtual Reality technologies for the inter-organisational preparation, rehearsal and management of security missions in response to urban crisis. The proposed system will enable the involvement of multiple participants from various operational agencies such as fire brigades, policemen, medical teams, military troops, and even the general public. It will allow the 3D simulation and evaluation of complex crisis and contingency scenarios that would be difficult to simulate and validate in real conditions. This system will offer a unique tool for creating, communicating and sharing complex knowledge between users with very different educational or cultural background. It will dramatically enhance the planning and management of crisis, the preparation of crisis management tasks, and, at the same time, it will provide a captivating tool for the collaborative training of the security actors and the information of citizens.     The EUA4X (European Atelier for Engineering and Computational Sciences) Series of Events will provide a well-balanced and focused training program in the field of computational sciences (ECS). ECS are a crucial part of the new century technologies, offering the potential for advance knowledge in a wide range of technical processes and physical phenomena of very high societal interest. This era of unprecedented simulation capability will be made possible by the increased sophistication of physical and mathematical modelling tools combined with the never ending advances in computer technology and information sciences. However, this situation is far from achieved, due to a shortage of multidisciplinary skilled researchers combined with the challenge of complex software development. The enabling technologies are available separately, but the know-how is very dispersed and rarely combined in a multidisciplinary context for the solution of complex problems. EUA4X aims to cure this lack of coherence and shortage of skilled labour force by offering a European wide training environment combining the competences of educational and research institutions with a very wide horizon and experience. A coherent program is offered that tackles both the enabling technologies and a number of important applications. This will be achieved through a well balanced program of 9 formal training courses, as well as 14 application oriented hands-on lecture series and workshops, tackling the above mentioned enabling technologies as well a s a selection of sophisticated applications. To better integrate the young researchers in the professional world of the scientific community, 4 events are planned which are organised as guest events in high-level scientific conferences.     A numerical analysis of a high temperature solar collecting tube, using helium as an heat transfer fluid

    This article analyses the use of a gas as a heat transfer fluid in the absorber tube. The fluid dynamics of the gas in the pipe, the heat-transfer in the system and the stresses and deformations of the pipe structure have been simulated numerically. The resulting flow characteristics, temperature distributions and stresses for a reference test case are discussed, and some possible solutions to enhance the system performance are analyzed

    The technology of search engines is evolving from indexing and classification of web resources based on keywords to more sophisticated techniques which take into account the meaning and the context of textual information and usage. Replying to query, commercial search engines face the user requests with a large amount of results, mostly useless or only partially related to the request; the subsequent refinement, operated downloading and examining as much pages as possible and simply ignoring whatever stays behind the first few pages, is left up to the user. Furthermore, architectures based on centralized indexes, allow commercial search engines to control the advertisement of online information, in contrast to P2P architectures that focus the attention on user requirements involving the end user in search engine maintenance and operation. To address such wishes, new search engines should focus on three key aspects: semantics, geo-referencing, collaboration/distribution. Semantic analysis lets to increase the results relevance. The geo-referencing of catalogued resources allows contextualisation based on user position. Collaboration distributes storage, processing, and trust on a world-wide network of nodes running on users’ computers, getting rid of bottlenecks and central points of failures. In this paper, we describe the studies, the concepts and the solutions developed in the DART project to introduce these three key features in a novel search engine architecture
