Digital Lending manuale.
Inferring the functional role of microRNAs from gene expression data
Collana seminari interni 2012, Number 20120704.MicroRNAs are short non coding RNA sequences that have emerged as a key mechanism for the regulation of a wide range of biological processes by targeting multiple genes for degradation and translation inhibition. Although new microRNAs are continually discovered, the biological role of most of them still remains unclear. One major challenge for the comprehension of miRNA functions resides in the prediction of target mRNAs, which is generally based on physical and evolutionary properties of the target sites. In this seminar, the functional role of miRNAs and the computational strategies for the identification of their putative targets will be described. As a case study, we will show the results obtained from an integrated analysis of miRNA-target expression data collected during the cellular differentiation process
On the representation of incompressible Newtownian free-surface CFD flows
This paper presents an attempt to develop a comprehensive representation of two components incompressible Newtonian flows. The primary target is to have insight on how to improve the CFD simulations of free-surface flows so as to deal with very high density ratios. First, the Navier-Stokes equations of a fluid with two immiscible components is derived from the single component equations. In this case, the surface tension does not come from the equations and must be added externally. Second we shortly review the Cahn-Hilliard and Allen-Cahn equations describing a phase separation process, and the phenomenological relation with surface-tension phenomena. Third, we build phase momentum equations which are consistent with the classical Navier-Stokes equations, but this time for miscible fluids. The concept of energy conservation applied separately to the phases is systematically used to build the phase momentum forces, with a particular regard to the surface tension. Fourth, by use of a dynamical equilibrium assumption and a specifi c splitting of the energies and their derived force, we retrieve the basic properties of the phase transport equations. The method is extended to the surface tension and to the baro-di ffusion. The relation between the phase forces and diffusion fluxes is clarified. Finally, a complete and consistent set of equations is provided and discussed

Automated moving mesh techniques and re-meshing strategies in CFD applications using morphing and rigid motions
Report on activity presented to RAS.The presence of moving meshes when motions of fluids and solids are being simulated requires a good control of the topological deformations that can take place both into the surface mesh and into the volume cells. The work done in getting the control of the mesh morphing techniques in CFD applications of fluid-structure interactions and rigid bodies motions is here presented. The effects of imposed rigid body motions on a fluid mesh surrounding or surrounded by a solid body are analysed. Surface boundary mesh extraction and CAD geometry updating strategies for the preservation of a good quality mesh during the calculation are investigated and developed. Java programming is employed in order to automate the process of re-meshing to avoid degeneration
Uomini o gadget? Accesso aperto e beni comuni

CFD Analysis of a MILD Low-Nox burner for the Oil and Gas industry
Collana seminari interni 2012, Number 20120507.Within the Industria 2015 Energy Efficiency Call of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development the Process Engineering and Combustion Group (PEC) at CRS4 is performing the CFD analysis of a MILD Low-Nox burner for the Oil and Gas industry (30 MWth). Our aim is to replicate the rig experiment by numerical simulation to have the control of the driving parameters that affect the combustion process in the entire boiler. The manufacturer tested the burner at Gioia del Colle (Italy) and reported data when operating at maximum load. We exploited the power of STAR-CCM+ to investigate the process. At first we run a non-reacting simulation. Results showed a supercritical throttling of the fuel at the injection in the flue recirculation system. We loaded then the combustion, radiation and heat transfer modules of STAR-CCM+. We calculated the reacting flow solution. Flow features within the combustion chamber and the heat transfer at the walls were estimated. Our results show that STAR-CCM+ is capable to give a detailed description of the process
Optimization of Heliostat Fields for Solar Tower Systems
In this work, a geometrical model is used to evaluate the sun radiation reflected from the heliostats toward
the aim point on the tower top, by taking into account the shading and blocking between neighboring
heliostats. This results in an analytical expression for the heliostats efficiency, which can provide very useful
informations for the optimization of the heliostat field. In particular, we obtain a very simple and exact
expression of the maximal energy collectable by the solar field and present effective strategies to reach such
maximum.2012-09-11Perpignan, Morocco, Marrakech; 2012Proceedings of the 18th International SolarPaces Symposiu
