    Effects of Dietary Supplementation of a Commercial Prebiotic (PrevidaTM) on Survival, Growth, Immune Responses and Gut Microbiota of Pacific White Shrimp, Litopenaeus Vannamei

    A 35-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate growth, bacterial populations of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and immune responses of Litopenaeus vannamei fed diets containing the commercial prebiotic Previda. Diets were formulated to contain Previda at 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 or 1.6 g kg 1 by weight. At the end of the study, differences in weight gain and survival among treatments were not significant (P \u3e 0.05), but denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis revealed that the microbial communities in the GIT changed significantly with the inclusion of dietary Previda at different levels. Previda was therefore able to selectively modify the microbial communities in the shrimp’s GIT. Although individual bacterial species were not identified, enteric populations in shrimp fed the prebiotic at similar levels of inclusion were genetically similar. In addition, shrimp fed Previda at 1.6 g kg 1 responded significantly (P \u3c 0.05) better immunologically with respect to hemocyte phagocytic capacity, haemolymph protein, hyaline cell counts and haemolymph glucose compared with shrimp fed the basal diet. Although shrimp were not exposed to virulent pathogens in this study, the observed upregulation of some of immune responses upon prebiotic supplementation indicates that an improved outcome of such challenges may be anticipated in Previda-fed shrimp under commercial conditions

    Giants Among Micromorphs: Were Cincinnatian (Ordovician, Katian) Small Shelly Phosphatic Faunas Dwarfed?

    Small fossils are preserved as phosphatic (carbonate fluorapatite) micro-steinkerns (∼ 0.5 mm diameter) in Upper Ordovician beds of the Cincinnati area. Mollusks are common, along with bryozoan zooecia, echinoderm ossicles, and other taxa. Similar occurrences of Ordovician micromorphic mollusks have been interpreted as ecologically dwarfed and adapted to oxygen-starved conditions, an interpretation with implications for ocean anoxia. An alternative explanation for small phosphatic steinkerns is taphonomic. Stable carbonate fluorapatite selectively filled small voids, thus preserving small fossils, including larval/young mollusks. Reworking concentrated small phosphatic steinkerns from multiple generations while larger, unfilled calcareous shells were destroyed, resulting in small fossils progressively replacing larger fossils. With thin sections and insoluble residues, we document evidence that many of these steinkerns are incomplete (“teilsteinkerns”) recording small parts of larger, normal-sized animals, or juveniles, along with smaller species. This finding suggests that these fossil assemblages are taphonomically, not ecologically, size-limited. Based on the ecology of modern oxygen minimum zones in which shelled mollusks are rare, the presence of abundant shelled organisms actually argues against severe oxygen stress. Our results also imply that the process by which the “small shelly fossils” of the Cambrian were preserved continued into the Ordovician.     Predator and Prey: A Study in the Prevalence of Articles Originally Published by “Predatory Publishers” in an Institutional Repository

    The problem of academics publishing in journals of dubious quality, published by so-called \u22predatory publishers\u22 is only increasing. A group of IPFW faculty members, concerned about the problem and the affect it could have on their departmental reputations and the futures of graduate students credited as co-authors on such works, approached the IPFW Helmke Library about examining the issue as it manifested itself within Opus, our institutional repository. This led to a year long study which involved sifting through every journal article uploaded to the repository one at a time and comparing their publishers with those listed on Beall\u27s List. The results revealed that, while the problem did indeed exist within our repository, it was limited in scope, and confined to a small numbers of departments and professors. That some of these were repeat offenders made us begin to question the predatory publisher label

Attendees will participate in the activity as both a speaker and listener, with discussion after each experience. I will then talk about difference ways to run the activity, leaving time for attendees to talk about their own experience teaching students about listening and non-verbal communication

    Mobile Application Development for Promoting Usage of City Trails

    The City of Fort Wayne Greenways and Trails Department maintains close to 90 miles of trails in the Fort Wayne Regional Trails Network, but it lacks means of gathering any trail usage data. Our software development team is addressing this absence of data by developing a mobile application for Android and iOS devices that will provide mutual benefits to the public and the City of Fort Wayne. Trail users will use our mobile apps to track their usage data for trail activities including distance traveled, activity duration, speed, calories burned, and coordinates along the trails. A database will then store the data gathered from the apps. To facilitate communications between the mobile apps and the database, we are developing a server-side web application, which will also host a data visualization page for City employees. The data we collect with our proposed mobile application can be used to analyze which areas of the trail are used the most, the trail used over temporal domain, and demographic data (volunteered) of the trail users via the web app. Our development approach is the Rational Unified Process. This type of software development lifecycle is a step-by-step process of eliciting the customer’s requirements, analyzing those requirements, designing the software, implementing the designs, testing, and maintenance. The server-side system will utilize Microsoft SQL Server for the Database, a .NET for the web application, and it will run Microsoft Windows Server 2008 for its operating system. The system is at the final stage of the development to be delivered to the City by the end of Spring 2016. For our implementation, we have adopted the Test Driven Development approach. This approach is adapted for smooth transition to the next senior capstone team, who will expand the current system to the next level without a high learning curve. The expected system expansion includes connectivity with the City’s new 311 web service, enhanced data visualization, and a newsfeed system to allow users to receive updates from the City.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1059/thumbnail.jp
