Understanding the Specialized Needs of Burmese Refugees in U.S. Colleges and Universities
The recent rapid influx of refugee students into U.S. schools has been a learning experience for all concerned. Not only do U.S. refugees come with memories of trauma, they also have specialized educational needs that differ from international students’ or voluntary migrants’ needs.
Recent refugees have come to the United States with very different socio-historical backgrounds from the majority of U.S. university students. Refugee students have very different stories of integration and incorporation in America than either immigrants or international students. Differentiated experiences demand differentiated treatment.
The scholarship on U.S. refugees in college is scarce. The authors seek to add to the available scholarship by advancing understanding of Burmese refugee students’ specialized educational needs through personal narratives. The authors also hope to improve educational provisions for refugee students through attention to their multiple responsibilities and socio-psychological needs. Finally, the authors recommend effective pedagogical strategies for use with refugee students
Extension of Manufacturing System Design Decomposition to Implement Manufacturing Systems That are Sustainable
This paper offers an extension of axiomatic design theory to ensure that leaders, managers, and engineers can sustain manufacturing systems throughout the product lifecycle. The paper has three objectives: to provide a methodology for designing and implementing manufacturing systems to be sustainable in the context of the enterprise, to define the use of performance metrics and investment criteria that sustain manufacturing, and to provide a systems engineering approach that enables continuous improvement (CI) and adaptability to change. The systems engineering methodology developed in this paper seeks to replace the use of the word \u22lean\u22 to describe the result of manufacturing system design. Current research indicates that within three years of launch, ninety percent of \u22lean implementations\u22 fail. This paper provides a methodology that leaders, managers, and engineers may use to sustain their manufacturing system design and implementation
Public Confidence in Government: Public Service Motivation and Political Ideology
A collection of surveys taken over the past several decades indicates that trust in government has been declining. One of the surveys is the General Social Survey (GSS). The GSS collects information from the general public on a wide variety of subjects, including attitudes toward government, politics, and policy issues. The 2014 GSS finds that only 11 percent of Americans have a great deal of confidence in the executive branch. Political trust is a crucial element of representative governance. With the upcoming Presidential election, it is critical to understand what explains public confidence in the executive branch of the federal government. To see government succeed, there needs to be a foundation of trust among all citizens. To address this research question, data from the 2014 General Social Survey are analyzed using ordered logistic regression. The main findings of this study include the following: Government employees are more likely to express confidence in executive branch leaders. In other words, government employees support the very institutions they work for. Also, Democrats are more likely to express confidence in executive branch leaders given that the White House was controlled by the Democratic Party in 2014. This study shows that executive leaders are seen as partisan leaders who have strong influence on forming attitudes toward government. Results of the 2014 Eagle Marsh Biodiversity Survey, Allen County, Indiana
ABSTRACT. Eagle Marsh, a 289.8 ha (716-acre) wetland nature preserve located on the southwest border of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is one of the largest wetland restorations ever undertaken in Indiana. The Little River Wetlands Project (LRWP) began acquisition, planning, and restoration in 2005 to 2007. The first biodiversity survey (also known as a bioblitz) of Eagle Marsh was conducted on 31 May and 1 June 2014. Over 125 scientists, naturalists, students, and other volunteers on thirteen different taxonomic teams observed and reported 728 taxa during the event. The thirteen taxonomic teams included aquatic macroinvertebrates, beetles, birds, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, fish, freshwater mussels, herpetofauna, small mammals, mushrooms/fungi, singing insects, snail-killing flies, and vascular plants. This manuscript presents both a brief history of Eagle Marsh and a summary overview of the results gathered by the thirteen taxonomic teams
Manufacturing System Design meets Big Data Analytics for Continuous Improvement
Desired business results are the direct result of the system design. It is also theorized that the \u27thinking\u27 within an organization creates the organization\u27s \u27structure\u27 or design, which then drives the system\u27s \u27behavior.\u27 Achievement of enduring change in a system\u27s performance must begin with a change in the thinking of all the people in the enterprise, but especially that of leadership. In the absence of such a change in the thinking, the needed structural changes within a system may result in short-lived, point solutions, resulting in localized optimization of sub-systems versus systemic improvement. Axiomatic design, applied to a manufacturing system, is a design methodology to best reflect, understand and control the inherent complexity of large-scale integrated systems. System stability, and ultimately cost and span-time reduction, are the desired objectives of system design. This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing system design decomposition, and discusses the integrated use of data analytics to identify bottlenecks for system-improvement and use of the manufacturing system design decomposition to cost-justify resource allocation decisions for improvement
Legal concerns when considering social media in data selections
This chapter examines the current state of the law in the United States on the use of social media data in the employee selection process. We begin by reviewing existing legal protections that could be violated when organizations use social media data, and we discuss recent case law involving social media and selection. We highlight various federal laws that have been used by the courts in social media selection cases, and we examine state laws that ban employers from asking applicants to provide social media user names and passwords as a condition of employment. We then review three examples of laws in other countries that could impact the use of social media data in selection both practically and legally. We conclude by suggesting practical guidelines for employers in their use of social media data in selection
