    Delaney Cole started her college education at IPFW in the fall of 2012. In 2014, she declared History as her major and expects to graduate in the fall of 2016. While she enjoys studying a wide variety of historical time periods, American history from 1700-Present and European history from 1800-Present are her favorites. To date, Delaney’s most acclaimed accomplishment has been having her paper The CTA Scandal of 1986 published online. In the future, Delaney hopes to get her Master’s Degree sometime in the next ten years, but until then she hopes to either work for the Parks Service or a Museum

    Aaron Ostermeyer is a History major, who has served as a Student Success Coach in the Mastodon Advising Center in Kettler Hall since the school year began. In this position he helps fellow students with varying issues such as test anxiety, social support, and consulting probation students. He also helps students with finding the resources they may need across campus. He has served as an extern with the Allen County Superior Court and shadowed Judge Wendy Davis. During Summer 2015, he was part of the IPFW Student Life’s Orientation Assistant Team where he assisted incoming students and their families in becoming more familiar with our campus

    Evaluating Trap Design for Capture of Amphipods in Western Lake Erie

    Comprehensive early detection monitoring programs for aquatic invasive fishes, bivalves \u26 select benthic macroinvertebrates are currently being conducted throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes. To improve the sampling efficiency of survey efforts, we evaluated three amphipod trap types. These included two novel designs and one previously published design set in four treatment configurations; light, bait, light \u26 bait combined, and neither light nor bait. Using two experimental designs, our objectives were to determine which trap and treatment had the greatest capture efficiency. Samples were collected Maumee Bay of western Lake Erie during 2015 in collaboration with biologists of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A total of 4,237 amphipods were identified among 6 amphipod species; no new species of non-native amphipods were discovered. Using light at 105 lumens in our amphipod traps may significantly increase catch per hour of amphipods. However, we determined that there was no significant differences in amphipod capture efficiencies among our three trap types. Additionally, our study found that the non-native Echinogammarus ischnus may be the dominant amphipod species in Maumee Bay. The traps and potential attractants used in this study were effective for rapid surveys of amphipods. This research may help managers evaluate survey efforts and improve sampling efficacy of amphipod species

    Investigating Transition Process for Students with Special Needs

    Many students who are in the mild or moderate special education program are not able to transition into the adult world smoothly when they exit high school. These students need a formal transition planning process to assist them. Some important decisions that need to be made are whether students will go to college or receive a type of job training, and where they will live. The research study investigated what special education teachers know about resources for the transition of students who have a mild or moderate disability from high school to adult life. Results show that teachers who teach special education, differ in their procedures about when a vocational rehabilitation agency representative should come to the Annual Case Review. Teachers do agree that the level of cognitive disability depends on how much assistance is needed from the rehabilitation agency

    Log-optimal Configurations on the Sphere

    In this article we consider the distribution of N points on the unit sphere Sd1S^{d−1} in RdR^d interacting via logarithmic potential. A characterization theorem of the stationary configurations is derived when N=d+2N = d + 2 and two new log-optimal configurations minimizing the logarithmic energy are obtained for six points on S3S^3 and seven points on S4S^4. A conjecture on the log-optimal configurations of d+2d + 2 points on Sd1S^{d−1} is stated and three auxiliary results supporting the conjecture are presented

    This Special Project focuses on professional learning paraprofessionals working in Special Education receive as well as need to maximize knowledge and understanding regarding students\u27 individualized needs. Professional learning is a growing trend in the field of special education, however, paraprofessionals working in Special Education received limited professional learning. A needs assessment survey was given to current paraprofessionals and teachers working in Special Education to analyze what professional learning has previously been offered as well as possible future topics. The findings from the literature review and the needs assessment survey supported the needs for a handbook to be created. The handbook will better facilitate professional learning for paraprofessionals working in Special Education and assist in better understanding students\u27 individualized needs

    Enzymatic Treatment of Alginate to Reduce Membrane Fouling for Water or Wastewater Purification

    This disclosure examines using alginate lyase to catalytically degrade alginate in order to decrease affinity and fouling potential to membranes of 0.2 and 0.02 μm pore size, respectively within a process line of a filtration system. Enzymatically treated alginate caused less fouling on both ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes than original alginate. Enzymatically treated alginate is predicted to cause less fouling on both membranes within the pH range of approximately 3.0 to approximately 10.0. Without the presence of calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 82% for both membranes. In the presence of 1 mM calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 55%. In addition, the foulant structure composed of enzymatically treated alginate was more readily removed by backwashing, suggesting reversible fouling. The advantages of using enzymatic technique to control membrane fouling include high efficiency and no damage to the membrane materials
