    Analysis of Competence of Thrips Species to Transmit Soybean vein necrosis virus and Impact of the Virus on Thrips Vector Biology and Behavior

    Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV) is an emerging viral disease affecting soybean, first discovered in Tennessee in 2008. SVNV has been identified as being a new virus in the genus Tospovirus, which are typically vectored by thrips. So far, only soybean thrips have been confirmed to transmit SVNV. However, other thrips species are found in soybean fields, including eastern flower thrips and tobacco thrips. The objectives of this study were to 1) Determine vector competence in three thrips species including soybean, eastern flower and tobacco thrips, and 2) Determine the effect of SVNV on host plant preference and life history of the thrips vector. Vector competence assays showed that eastern flower thrips and tobacco thrips were able to acquire the virus after being exposed to SVNV-infected leaf tissues for 48 hours. Both species were also able to successfully transmit SVNV to healthy plants, but at a lower efficiency (less than 10% of the plants were infected by eastern flower thrips and 36% by tobacco thrips) than soybean thrips (71% infection). SVNV infection did not influence host preference of soybean thrips that is both SVNV-infected and SVNV-uninfected soybean thrips aggregated on healthy plants compared to SVNV-infected plants. SVNV-infected soybean thrips had significantly higher fecundity compared to uninfected thrips. Taken together, these results contribute to a better understanding of virus-vector interaction, which is crucial for control of SVNV, as well as control of soybean thrips.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1012/thumbnail.jp

    WoundView: A Prototype Telemedicine System Designed for Wound Assessment

    The current standard of wound assessment is heavily dependent on manual measurements and visual inspection. This approach has areas that need to be improved to provide a better quality service to patients and to enhance the accuracy of the assessment. Some of existing steps can be digitally automated and the image data can be properly stored for later computation and analysis. These steps will reduce inconvenience for the patient and increase accuracy for wound care. This project is a creation of a prototype system that allows a team of medical practitioners to remotely record data of a patient’s wounds and then assess the healing process of the patient’s wounds with the assistance of computers and domain experts at a medical office. The system is developed as a web application, connected with a back-end sub-system including a database. By using a front-end graphical user interface, such as through the Internet or on a mobile phone, a local medical practitioner can capture the images of wounds at a patient’s location and request an evaluation by physicians who are located at their medical office. The physician remotely assesses the transmitted images and is able to give feedback or a diagnosis in real time. This assessment procedure provides a convenience to patients who are experiencing lack of mobility. This also enables the patients to receive high quality services from medical professionals at other facilities. In addition, the developed system improves the quality of service by utilizing a computer-assisted measuring process on the digitized images. This developed system will also allow color/shape tracking of the image in order to automatically measure the wound’s dimensions. Lastly, the data can be digitally archived and has the ability to be used for historical comparison to keep track of the wound’s healing progress with annotations attached to the image. The Senior Capstone team’s role in this project is the initialization of the WoundView system and the aforementioned tasks. Our sponsor institution is Parkview’s Mirro Center for Research and Innovation. This project has future potential to contribute greatly to the under-developed branch of telemedicine due its ability to be improved and expanded on. One such example includes deriving the wound depth and volume from the images.     The Algerian Revolution: Zhor Zerari’s Prison Poetry in Translation

    In this project I analyze and translate from French to English the collection Poèmes de prison, written by Zhor Zerari, an Algerian writer and militant who was imprisoned and tortured under the French government in Algeria during the Algerian War of Independence. My annotated and glossed translation will note and reflect significant poetic conventions, themes, and images. I will also present, interrogate, and analyze the translation process including important cultural, political, and historical aspects of the source language, providing a brief overview of French colonial activity in Algeria and the place of women in the resistance movement. I highlight theoretical, cultural, and linguistic problems in translation and suggest possible solutions. I present this analysis of my process in order to further understand the implications of feminist and “postcolonial” translation theory and practice in women’s writing and demonstrate the importance of these translations to the larger context of contemporary literature and language studies, French colonialization, Algerian Independence and the legacy of French censorship. I hope to expose and address a lack of access to texts like Zerari’s in literature and language study. This project is intended to complicate Western understandings of French colonization in Algeria, women militants and their role in independence efforts, and the translation of francophone poetry.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1002/thumbnail.jp

    Cultural complexity of tattooing practices in Japan

    Tattooing, as one of the oldest practices surviving in contemporary societies, represents the complex nature of globalization. In Japan, where Confucian doctrines strongly reflect many aspects of its culture, the recent global consumerism has created mixed attitudes toward tattooing practices. Due to historical and sociocultural backgrounds, getting tattooed are often associated with criminal activities and rebellion against society. Despite the fact that tattooed people are often stigmatized and frequently conceal their tattoos in contemporary Japan, more tattooists and tattooees overtly present themselves as members of a tattoo culture within that context. Describing a history of Japanese tattooing, Mieko Yamada explains values, beliefs, and practices associated with tattooing during the pre-modern and feudal periods. She also discusses how these have shaped and modified the modern cultural practices and how the latter are being influenced by globalization and postmodern values and practices

    Characterizing Heterogeneity in Vulnerable Hosts on Worm Propagation

    Worm propagation models are important for understanding worm dynamics and designing effective and efficient detection and defence systems. The existing models, however, ignore the heterogeneity in vulnerable hosts and assume that the worm-scanning rate is the same for all infected hosts. In this work, we analytically and empirically study the impact of heterogeneity of vulnerable hosts on worm propagation. Specifically, we first apply the Jensen\u27s inequality to show that the heterogeneity in vulnerable hosts indeed hinders the speed of worm propagation. Next, we propose a novel model to predict and characterise worm dynamics among heterogeneous vulnerable hosts. Finally, applying the real trace from Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) to simulate the propagation of a Witty worm in the Internet, we verify our analytical results and demonstrate that our proposed model can accurately predict the spread of worms among heterogeneous vulnerable hosts
