    Reduction of orthophosphates loss in agricultural soil by nano calcium sulfate

    Nutrient loss from soil, especially phosphorous (P) from farmlands to natural water bodies via surface runoff or infiltration, have caused significant eutrophication problems. This is because dissolved orthophosphates are usually the limiting nutrient for algal blooms. Currently, available techniques to control eutrophication are surprisingly scarce. Calcium sulfate or gypsum is a common soil amendment and has a strong complexation to orthophosphates. The results showed that calcium sulfate reduced the amount of water extractable P (WEP) through soil incubation tests, suggesting less P loss from farmlands. A greater decrease in WEP occurred with a greater dosage of calcium sulfate. Compared to conventional coarse calcium sulfate, nano calcium sulfate further reduced WEP by providing a much greater specific surface area, higher solubility, better contact with the fertilizer and the soil particles, and superior dispersibility. The enhancement of the nano calcium sulfate for WEP reduction is more apparent for a pellet- than a powdered- fertilizer. At the dosage of Ca/P weight ratio of 2.8, the WEP decreased by 31. ±. 5% with the nano calcium sulfate compared to 20. ±. 5% decrease with the coarse calcium sulfate when the pellet fertilizer was used. Computation of the chemical equilibrium speciation shows that calcium hydroxyapatite has the lowest solubility. However, other mineral phases such as hydroxydicalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, octacalcium phosphate, and tricalcium phosphate might form preceding to calcium hydroxyapatite. Since calcium sulfate is the major product of the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process, this study demonstrates a potential beneficial reuse and reduction of the solid FGD waste

    The epistemology of dualism has informed the construction of dichotomies and differences in cultural discourses for a long time. Interestingly, such construction is often, though not always, indicated by the preposition “between” that signifies separation. In their writings about Ireland, Joyce and Beckett seek to deconstruct dualism by illustrating the pitfalls of radical provincialism on the one hand and by envisioning global humanities often indicated by the conjunction “and” that signifies addition, rather than separation, on the other. Drawing on the concept of universal identity developed by Levi-Strauss, Gunn, Hassan, and Jung, we offer a new reading of both authors’ representation of “global citizen” in such figures as Wellsley, Conroy, and Shuah

    Influence of instream habitat and water chemistry on amphibians in channelized agricultural headwater streams

    The widespread use of stream channelization and subsurface tile drainage for removing water from agricultural fields has led to the development of numerous channelized agricultural headwater streams within agricultural watersheds of the Midwestern United States, Canada, and Europe. Channelized agricultural headwater streams have been documented to serve as habitat for amphibians, but information on amphibian habitat relationships within these streams is lacking and needed for developing effective conservation strategies. We quantified instream habitat, water chemistry, and sampled amphibians from seven sites in three channelized streams in Cedar Creek, Indiana in 2008 and 2009 and five sites in five channelized streams in Upper Big Walnut Creek, Ohio in 2009. We conducted an indirect gradient analysis involving the use of principal component analysis and generalized linear mixed effect model analysis to determine which variables had the greatest influence on amphibian community and population structure. Overall, amphibian community and population structure was most strongly correlated with water chemistry rather than instream habitat within channelized agricultural headwater streams in Indiana and Ohio. Eleven of 12 amphibian response variables were most strongly correlated with either a water chemistry gradient of nitrate + nitrite and acetochlor, a gradient of total nitrogen and ammonia, or a gradient of simazine and total phosphorus. Only one amphibian response variable was most strongly correlated with an instream habitat gradient of dissolved oxygen and water depth. Our results suggest that conservation strategies that target reductions of nutrients and herbicides will provide the greatest benefits for amphibians within channelized agricultural headwater streams

    As the Grains Move Down the Creek: The IPFW Case

    As water moves downstream, it carries sediments that become sorted and rounded. The purpose of this research project, a requirement for an upper level geology course, is to determine the water content of soil, overall composition of sediments (gravel, sand, etc.), and grain size changes (if it does change) along a river profile, using a creek that runs through the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) campus. In the 2014 Fall semester, grain size distribution analysis was performed on 14 soil samples collected along the length of the creek. Fourteen soil samples were also collected from same sites in the 2015 Spring and Fall semesters resulting in three sets of data. Collected data indicates water content and grain size distribution vary along the creek profile. Water content for the Fall 2014 samples has a range of ~20 -28%. This is closely mimicked with the Fall 2015 samples with a range 20-25%. However the Spring 2015 data begins ~28% and falls to ~24% over the course of the creek profile. This could be due to a higher influx of water during the spring season keeping the sediments waterlogged. Certain soil samples contained significantly lower water content than others, that, when examined more closely, revealed different soil profiles containing less silt-clays and higher sand-gravel. The soil composition data ranges from coarse to fine grained sands, silts, and clays with less gravel present in the recent samples. This could be due to heavy flooding experienced in this area as well as recent construction on campus. Knowing the cause(s) of finning sediments downstream in the creek may help in managing the stream and probably other rivers in northern Indiana. This is an ongoing research and new data will be presented
