    The Bright and Dark Side of Joseph Fenton: An Analysis of Narratives Describing the Man Known as Sudharman

    The death of Joe “Sudharman” Fenton sparked competing narratives leaving some members of the family wondering who Joe Fenton was, the man who died as Sudharman. During the night of July 4, 2010, Sudharman was murdered as he slept in his yoga studio in Union County, Pennsylvania. This piece examines his death in order to examine how communication was used to describe Joe Fenton. We used autoethnographic and ethnographic methods to collect the media coverage of his death, the funeral remembrances, and the blog posts, as well as completed two in-depth interviews with family members in order to find out who Joe Fenton was. We analyzed how others described Fenton through the frames of dark and bright communication behaviors. Our analysis determined that Fenton was seen in a spiritual/religious light, as he was described as god-like, a shining beacon and memorable.     Class Performance in the Nineteenth Century France Presented in Short Stories of the Nineteenth Century French Writers

    The topic of this poster is class performance in the nineteenth century France as shown in two short stories by nineteenth century French writers: “My Uncle Jules” (1883) by Guy de Maupassant and “Master Cornille’s Secret” (1879) by Alphonse Daudet. The term “class” is defined according to the Conflict Theory of Karl Marx – as a group of people united by their relationship to the means of production. The presenter is particularly interested in examining the relationship between the aristocracy — who claims a natural class status—and other classes, such as the bourgeoisie and the poor. She has identified in these texts the following problems: Is there such a phenomenon as “natural” class performance (as the aristocracy would seem to claim) or are all class performances artificial by nature? Does class performance produce upward class mobility and, if so, does it work equally well for all classes? Can fantasies - a moving force behind class performance - produce reality? More generally, how can literature help us understand ways and methods that people used to navigate complicated class dynamics in nineteenth century France? The presenter explores these questions using the model developed by Kevin Swafford in his article “Performance Anxiety, or the Production of Class in Anthony Trollope’s The Claverings” in addition to several supporting articles.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1005/thumbnail.jp

    The Struggle for Recognition During 19th Century Mexico

    Despite the fact that 30,000 French troops invaded Mexico in the 1860s and installed Maximilian in power and created the Second Mexican Empire, Mexican liberals put up a sustained guerilla military resistance. But this paper examines a different significant battle, the one that took place on the political front. Both Maximilian and the liberal resistance that opposed him led by Juárez sought diplomatic support and recognition. At the time, not only was Mexico divided, but also the U.S. since the country was in the middle of the Civil War. This paper examines the attempts Maximilian and Juárez made to gain recognition and support during this complicated period during which the Union had to weigh the impact that its action in Mexico might have on France’s attitudes about the American Civil War.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1003/thumbnail.jp

    16S rDNA Pyrosequencing Indicates Pseudomonas sp as the Predominant Bacteria in Gut Microbiome of Soybean Thrips, Neohydathothrips variablilis

    Soybean growers in all major soybean-producing areas of North America are facing a potential new threat to soybean production due to an emerging soybean viral disease, Soybean Vein Necrosis Virus (SVNV). Currently the disease has been detected in 16 states in the Mid-west including Indiana. The disease can cause up to 46% yield loss in soybean. The virus is transmitted from plant-to-plant by an insect vector, soybean thrips (Neohydathothrips variablilis). Soybean thrips acquire SVNV in the early larval stage and transmit the virus to the soybean plants as adults. Like other plant feeding insects, soybean thrips have endosymbiotic bacteria that influence fundamental biological processes such as synthesis of essential nutrients and recycling of nitrogenous wastes. Moreover, transmission of some pathogens may be affected by endosymbiotic bacteria. There is no information on the diversity of endosymbionts in soybean thrips. Hence, the objective of our study was to determine the diversity of endosymbiotic bacteria in field-collected soybean thrips. We performed DNA extraction from a pool of 100 adult male and female soybean thrips. The DNA was then subjected to 16S rDNA pyrosequencing to determine the endosymbiont bacteria in the insect sample. Our results indicated a diversity of bacteria in soybean thrips including, Pseudomonas sp, S treptomyces sp, Herbaspirillum sp and Acinetobacter sp. Pseudomonas sp accounted for nearly 50% of the bacterial diversity in the sample. This is the first comprehensive survey of bacteria associated with soybean thrips gut. Results of this study will provide a foundation for future studies to elucidate the roles of gut microbes in SVNV transmission.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2016/1017/thumbnail.jp

    Desirable Complexity

    Design methodologies devote a great degree of effort on deciphering, decomposing, and simplifying problems. This approach is particularly true in Axiomatic Design to the point that inability to simplify and understand a situation is defined as complexity. The approach with Axiomatic Design is to avoid complexity because complexity is assumed to make a reliable solution intractable. What if an unreliable situation is needed? This paper explores the concept of \u22desirable complexity\u22, an application of Suh\u27s complexity for fields which want to create problems or challenges rather than eliminating them: puzzles, sabotage, physical security, and unique identification. In these areas, inverting AD complexity theory gives suggestions to making duplication and solution discovery challenging by creating seemingly unsolvable problems

    Numerical Simulation of Heat Transfrer and Separation Al2O3/Nanoflouid Flow in Concentric Annular Pipe

    Predictions are reported for turbulent three-dimensional heat transfer and flow separation of Al2O3/nanofluid in concentric annular cylinders with sudden expansion, in which the outer cylinder of a downstream section is heated at a uniform heat flux whereas the outer cylinder of the upstream section and the whole inner cylinder are adiabatic. The conservation equations are solved using the finite volume method. The numerical simulations are carried out by standard k-ε turbulence model. Results presented in this paper are for a constant heat flux range of 4000 ≤ q ≤ 16,000 W/m2, four nanoparticle volumes (ɸ = 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%), and three expansion ratios (ER = 1.25, 1.67, and 2). The Reynolds number is in the range of 20,000 ≤ Re ≤ 50,000. Results reveal that the volume fraction of Al2O3 and Reynolds number significantly affect the surface heat transfer coefficient: an increase in surface heat transfer coefficient was noted when both volume fraction of Al2O3 and Reynolds number were increased for all cases. It is found that the peak of the heat transfer coefficient occurs after the sudden expansion moved far from the step height with the increase of sudden expansion dimensions due to separation flow in case of both pure water and nanofluid. The size of the recirculation zone increases as the Reynolds number and expansion ratio increase. Increasing the nanoparticle of Al2O3/nanofluid tends to enhance the heat transfer coefficient due to nanoparticle heat transport in the base fluid which raises the convection heat transfer

    Integrating Everyday Examples in Mechanical Engineering Courses for Teaching Enhancement

    One critical measure of success in primarily undergraduate institutions is to achieve high retention rate. Retention rate is the number of students who continue as students at the same institution in the next year compared to the number of students in the current year. Teaching-focused institutions are generally regional, and students are highly diversified in terms of their academic backgrounds and interests. It tends to be a great challenge to retain a high percentage of engineering students at regional campuses. The purpose of the presented work is to integrate everyday examples in mechanical engineering courses to motivate students in completing their studies. This approach has proven very beneficial to both students and instructors. Students are highly motivated and inspired to apply their engineering knowledge directly to everyday, real-world applications; this results in a higher level of student engagement, which in turn, leads to opportunities to improve teaching performance for instructors
