Empathy and Evil: Drug-Dealing Murderers are People Too

    No full text
In this chapter, we argue that Walter White’s status as a fictional character in no way precludes our empathizing with him as another subject. Taking our cue from Edith Stein’s concept of empathy, we demonstrate that acts of memory are different from acts of empathy, and that how it is possible to empathize with fictional characters. This analysis is supplemented by Merleau-Ponty’s concept of a phenomenal body, which defines a body as a locus of possible action rather than a thing constituted of a certain material. We then provide an analysis of the potential conflict between empathic concern for (possibly evil) others and our own ethics; although it seems that great differences exist between individuals with respect to moral judgments, our similarities far exceed these differences

Do you have anything to hide? Infidelity-related behaviors on social media sites and marital satisfaction

    No full text
Social media provides one route to behaviors that may be potentially harmful to romantic relationships, such as communicating with alternative partners, which can sometimes create relationship conflict, breakups, or divorce. Limited empirical evidence exists concerning social media infidelity-related behaviors and marital relationships. This study examined whether married/cohabiting individuals are using social media sites to engage in online infidelity-related behaviors and to what extent this related to relationship satisfaction, ambivalence, and relational attachment characteristics as reported by 338 married/cohabiting individuals from 176 families. Only a small percentage of married/cohabiting couples reported engaging in social media infidelity-related behaviors; however, more engagement in infidelity-related behaviors on social media was significantly related to lower relationship satisfaction, higher relationship ambivalence, and greater attachment avoidance and anxiety in both women and men. Additionally, attachment anxiety and gender interacted with relationship satisfaction in predicting online infidelity-related behaviors when controlling for other variables. Implications are discussed

Risk Sensitivity and the Sikh Uprising in the Punjab

    No full text
Risk sensitivity combined with prospect theory and framing concepts can be quite useful in explaining which individuals and groups can become radicalized and more likely to resort to terrorism to achieve their political and economic objectives. Such radicalization can occur with groups willing to use violence for major gains and for groups seeking to prevent significant losses of status or wealth. The Sikh uprising in the Punjab in the latter part of the twentieth century is an example of terrorism based not on poverty but as part of an effort to preserve or regain a relatively advantageous position. The Sikhs were in a somewhat advantageous situation in India but faced increasing challenges to their economic, political, and social position in the Punjab and in India in general. The counterterrorism policies of the government contributed to the perception of threat that further radicalized the Sikh community.Risk sensitivity combined with prospect theory and framing concepts can be quite useful in explaining which individuals and groups can become radicalized and more likely to resort to terrorism to achieve their political and economic objectives. Current beer brands fall short in offering packaging and branding that is visually appealing to women. To solve this, I want to create a unique Beer Brand for Women using visual design that is different than many of the current brands on the market. My goal is to see if I can create packaging and promotional materials that will address the different buying habits of women. Through my studies and research at IPFW I have learned that men and women have different ideas on what is visually appealing. This research and study prompted me to explore this topic. To prove this idea, I created all the branding, marketing and advertising material required for a new brand of beer. This new company will produce and package beer with designs implemented to appeal to the female market. I used colors and designs that were specifically created to visually appeal to my target audience. The proposed impact that my project will have is an increase in beer sales to women, and possibly a different way that other companies package and market to women.http://opus.ipfw.edu/stu_symp2017/1043/thumbnail.jp
