It consists of a blend of different media art materials — narrative film footage, documentary film footage, archival film footage, photography, and animation. The narrative center of the piece is a talking head whereby Nick Karpinski addresses a single camera and narrates the film’s making of, while interweaving the stated media art materials

    The Wallflower Prototype is based on my novel, “Wallflower.” “Wallflower” follows the story of daring trauma survivor, Robyn. She uncovers a dark truth - demons and she-devils look just like her. Armed with her newfound strength and courage, she takes it upon herself to face the darkness and prove that true power comes from within. This novel stemmed from a thought experiment. I pondered a thought-provoking scenario: What if in a society, people\u27s choices were believed to be influenced by malevolent demons, and the terrible atrocities committed by humanity were the work of these dark forces

    This thesis proposes a novel lightweight end-to-end encryption algorithm tailored for securingInternet of Things (IoT) data within a blockchain framework. With the proliferation of IoT devices generating vast amounts of sensitive data, ensuring its confidentiality and integrity during transmission and storage becomes paramount. Traditional encryption techniques may impose significant overhead on resource constrained IoT devices, hindering their efficiency and scalability. To address this challenge, this proposed algorithm strikes a balance between robust security and computational efficiency, leveraging the inherent characteristics of blockchain technology for data integrity and immutability. Through extensive experimentation and analysis, this thesis demonstrates the efficacy and feasibility of this encryption scheme in safeguarding IoT data while maintaining compatibility with blockchain frameworks. This research contributes to the advancement of secure and efficient data integration in IoT applications within distributed blockchain environments

    Analysis of Terrestrial Deep Subsurface Simulated Environment and Native Microorganisms Interacting with Oxidative Hydrothermal Dissolution Processed Corn Cob

    An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations has been observed, with values ~40% higher than those seen in the last 800,000 years. This increase in atmospheric CO2 has been linked to anthropogenic emissions due to burning of fossil fuels, and is considered a major driving factor of the contemporary climate change. Development and implementation of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods is imperative to the mitigation and reversal of climate change and its effects. Carbon fixing organisms, such as plants, are able to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it as biomass. A novel CDR method known as indirect air capture (iDAC) proposes to make use of a technology known as Oxidative Hydrothermal Dissolution (OHD) to break down biomass into low molecular weight water soluble molecules. With the iDAC method, the OHD processed biomass would by injected into a deep subsurface geological reservoir for long term sequestration of the carbon. The deep subsurface is not a sterile environment, but rather its own ecosystem populated with a diverse phylogenetic array of microorganisms. OHD-processed biomass injected into the deep subsurface would certainly come into contact with these communities, and introduce to them new compounds and chemical characteristics. In this study, an OHD-processed corn cob solution was injected into a simulated deep subsurface environment containing deep subsurface microorganisms in order to observe outcomes of interaction and to provide data that can be extrapolated for scale-up and in situ iDAC method studies. The results of this study showed that during the interaction between the OHD-processed corn cob and subsurface native and non-native microorganisms there was a shift in the microbial community but no loss of biodiversity. Additionally, over the course of the study, production of CO2 was observed. Further studies are recommended to amend the OHD-processed corn cob solution by basification to expectedly mitigate the production of CO2

    Evolution of iron silicate minerals over geologic time utilizing mineral databases

    There is an implication that minerals have been evolving for the entirety of Earth’s history. Iron silicate minerals are very abundant in Earth’s crust, form in a wide range of pressure, temperature, Eh, pH conditions, and are more resistant to weathering than other iron mineral groups, therefore are expected to be representative of the overall changes that occur through geologic time. Iron is a redox sensitive element, and the valence state of iron in iron silicate minerals can be used to track large-scale geologic events, such as supercontinent formation periods and the Great Oxidation Event. Comparing the average oxidation state of iron through geologic time with atmospheric oxygen abundance reconstructions we can observe a 200-million-year time lag between the increase in average iron oxidation and the increase in O2 in the atmosphere. This time lag is interpreted as iron acting as a sink for molecular oxygen. Iron was being oxidized from Fe2+ to Fe3+ and being deposited in large quantities as the Banded Iron Formations

    This research explores the integration of Hyperledger Fabric., a framework of blockchain in industrial applications, particularly focusing on supply chain management. By addressing the limitations of traditional blockchains - such as high transaction latency, scalability challenges, and privacy concerns - this research demonstrates how Hyperledger fabrics overcomes them. Through simulation, we show significant enhancements in transaction speed, data privacy and scalability, making the Fabric a viable solution for industrial systems

    Interplay of NR3C1 and FOXO1 in somatotrope differentiation

    This study investigates the molecular mechanisms governing pituitary gland development,focusing on the roles of transcription factors NR3C1 and FOXO1 in the differentiation and maturation of somatotropes, responsible for GH production. NR3C1, activated by glucocorticoids, is critical for somatotrope maturation and GH production, while FOXO1 plays a key role in mediating NR3C1’s effects. Disruptions in NR3C1 signaling impair somatotrope development, indicating its importance in maintaining normal pituitary function. Furthermore, FOXO1 is also essential for glucocorticoid-induced somatotrope maturation and GH expression, as demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo models where FOXO1 deficiency results in significantly reduced GH production. Additionally, FOXO1 regulates the heat shock protein Hsp90b1, a chaperone that stabilizes NR3C1, ensuring effective glucocorticoid signaling and proper somatotrope differentiation. This research provides a comprehensive understanding of how NR3C1 and FOXO1 interact to regulate pituitary development, highlighting a broader role of glucocorticoid signaling and its importance in maintaining molecular interactions necessary for somatotrope function

    This study investigates the relationships between Nature of Science (NOS) understandings and Self-Efficacy (SE) beliefs among preservice elementary teachers (PSETs). The dissertation addresses gaps in the literature concerning the longitudinal growth of NOS understandings and SE beliefs from content science courses to methods courses, which are crucial for effective science teaching preparation. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research shows complex relationships between PSETs\u27 evolving conceptions of NOS and their SE in teaching science through inquiry.Quantitative analyses utilize Spearman Rank Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression Models to highlight significant correlations between PSETs’ NOS understandings and SE beliefs. The qualitative thematic analysis provides profound insights into NOS\u27s complex yet often partial grasp. This study highlights the need to address the misconceptions held by PSETs and the challenges they face in grasping the NOS, which are critically related to their SE beliefs and, subsequently, teaching practices. It underscores the importance of thoroughly integrating epistemological knowledge with pedagogical skills in science teacher education programs. This research makes a substantial contribution to the preparation of future elementary teachers by exploring the intricate relationship between NOS understandings and SE beliefs. The study’s insights aim to help teacher educators equip PSETs to engage students in authentic scientific practices, thus fostering a more scientifically literate society. The findings provide crucial insights for educational strategies and policy reforms to improve future science educators\u27 preparation and confidence

    Understanding the Relationship Between Humble Leadership, Reflecting Dialogue, Psychological Safety and Job Satisfaction: A Study of Japanese Correctional Officers

    This study investigates the relationships between humble leadership, reflecting dialogue, psychological safety, and job satisfaction among correctional officers in Japanese correctional institutions. Correctional officers face high levels of stress due to their demanding roles in rehabilitating and managing inmates, yet the impact of organizational factors on their job satisfaction remains underexplored. As Japan undergoes significant changes in its penal system, understanding the factors that contribute to a supportive work environment is crucial. First, this study examines the relationship between psychological safety and job satisfaction among correctional officers. Second, it explores whether facilities that practice reflecting dialogue and humble leadership experience higher levels of psychological safety compared to other institutions. By investigating the influence of humble leadership—characterized by leaders who recognizes their own limitations and potential while striving to understand team members on a personal level—and reflecting dialogue—a method promoting open discussion—, this study aims to provide insights into how psychological safety can be enhanced, ultimately leading to improved job satisfaction among correctional staff
