Unveiling the Teacher Look : An Analysis of White Spatiality and Disciplinary Exile in the American Classroom
This thesis seeks to properly identify and illuminate the disciplinary practices of the K-12 classroom that necessitate, cultivate, and perpetrate colonial violence to maintain the established order (anti-Black racism) of our modern American society. To accomplish this, the relationship between the white teacher and non-white student is problematized by combining the conceptual frameworks of George Yancy’s white gaze and Maria Lugones’ racist/colonial gaze. This analysis highlights the ulterior motives of the “teacher look,” an action that utilizes shame to instruct students on how to behave properly in the classroom, through the authoritative role of whiteness in managing knowledge, understanding, and subjectivity. From these conclusions, it is shown that whiteness is granted perceptual authority over the Other through the rhetoric of modernity. This rhetoric disillusions the public of the ideological structures that ensure white supremacy and the white subject as a self-contained substance existing independent of some Black qua inferior. In attempting to overcome this disillusioned state, multiple decolonial avenues and pedagogical practices are employed to dismantle the authoritative role of whiteness and the instrumentality of shame in the disciplinary prospects of the “teacher look.” By approaching the problem of race in America through the disciplinary mechanism of its education system, this project seeks not only to ascertain the institutional and systematic ways that white teachers and white students uphold and inscribe racist ideology through their social practices and relationships, but also to empower students of color to resist and transcend the limitations imposed upon them from the white world
SIMULATION OF AUTONOMOUS MOBILE VEHICLES USING FEDERATED LEARNING
Federated learning(FL), a form of distributed machine learning, facilitates collaboration among multiple devices, such as autonomous vehicles in this context, aiming to enhance object detection accuracy without compromising individual data privacy. This approach allows vehicles to refine their models without divulging sensitive information like location, routes, or personal preferences. Training data remains on each device in FL, enabling model updates based on local data without transmitting raw data to a central repository. The refined models are aggregated on a central server, making an improved global model accessible to all participating devices. The BDDK100 dataset, comprising over 100,000 high-resolution images from video recordings captured by a front-facing camera on a moving vehicle, serves as a benchmark dataset for autonomous driving. This simulation study employs three simulated clients, each representing a distinct autonomous vehicle, engaged in collaborative training of a deep neural network for object detection through the FL paradigm. The YOLOV5 model is used as object detection model. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the efficacy of FL in the context of autonomous vehicle systems, specifically in object detection. The collaborative training approach, wherein autonomous vehicles collectively refine a deep neural network without compromising data privacy, holds promise for enhancing the overall accuracy and performance of object detection models. The utilization of the BDDK100 dataset underscores the practical applicability of the FL methodology in real-world scenarios, establishing it as a viable solution for improving machine learning models in decentralized environments. As autonomous technologies evolve, FL stands out as a privacy-preserving and collaborative method, contributing to advancing intelligent systems without sacrificing individual data security
MAGICAL AND ORDINARY CHARACTERS IN SHURALE AND FIREBIRD
This thesis will provide an analysis of Farid Yarullin’s ballet Shurale. This particular analysis will examine magical and ordinary creatures in the ballet including the main character Shurale, hero Batyr, and his bride, maiden-bird Suyumbike, exploring some parallels with Stravinsky’s Firebird, and the use of Tatar folk music in this first ever national ballet of Tatarstan. Also, this work will document the history of unique Tatar traditional costumes in Shurale and classic chorographic heritage of Kazan School of Dance. Shurale was performed in different theaters across the USSR, and in 1950 Shurale received numerous awards by Russian government in Moscow. Shurale was performed in Leningrad Opera and Ballet theater named after S. Kirov and is still performed on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in Saint-Petersburg, Tatar National Theater in Kazan and in many theaters abroad. Igor Stravinsky and Farid Yarullin both worked with folk music and wrote their pieces with a national emphasis in terms of plot, costumes, and music. In my analysis I will explore similarities and differences between Shurale and Firebird. In the same way that Igor Stravinsky used a Russian national song “In the grove or in the garden” in his ballet Firebird, Farid Yarullin used a famous tatar national song “Teftileu” in Shurale as a symbol of Tatar nation. There are also parallels in characters, costuming and music. I will compare good and evil characters, use of different diatonic and chromatic progressions based on human and supernatural characters, and use of different instrumentation for each character. Aesthetic Wit(h)nessing in Times of Trouble: Propositions for Working Affirmatively With Difference Within Matrixial Pedagogical Practice.
This article explores how Bracha Ettinger’s notion of matrixial aesthetic wit(h)nessing fosters opportunities for dealing with memory and trauma in classroom encounters during times of trouble. Drawing on my experience of teaching a history of art and design curriculum at a University of Technology in South Africa, the intention is to highlight the crucial role that Ettingerian Matrixial Theory (EMT) plays in building trust in troubled educational spaces. Concerned with the ethical implications of surfacing and transforming traumas, the inquiry begins with a discussion on how South Africa (SA), and SA Higher Education (HE) in particular, are saturated with traumatic histories whose palpable affects continue to make their presence felt. The paper then introduces EMT and considers how it might contribute to HE pedagogical practice. Drawing on pedagogical learnings that have co-emerged through years of slow iterative returns to matrixial praxis, the paper puts forward six propositions for pedagogical practice that seek to work affirmatively with difference. Although situated within the context of SAHE, it is hoped that the reverberations of the experiences shared here will have resonances with higher education globally
Gestating and Co-Becoming with Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy
This article seeks to infuse and enrich the spheres of Arts and Education through a nascent introduction of Ettingerian Matrixial Pedagogy. To articulate this, I weave together the practices of Gestare Art Collective, which we describe as “matrixial infused education,” the “placental thinking” of Nané Jordan with my own thinking, art making and teaching. This article unfolds through interlacing theory and reflections on teachings found within art practices of Ma Poses, Womb Walking, Nap-Ins, and Spontaneous Creation-Making, along with examples of pedagogical artworkings: Metramorphosis and Muted Colours of Grief. The article closes with a poetic métissage inquiry that became—a Matrixial Pedagogy Wom(b)anifesto
IS MODERN CONSTITUTIONAL LAW MAKING US UNHEALTHY?
This is a review of Wendy E. Parmet’s new book, Constitutional Contagion: COVID, the Courts, and Public Health. The book adequately exposes the reader to criticism of modern jurisprudence involving COVID-19. However, this review focuses on three areas of critique: comparing red states versus blue states for COVID-19 response outcomes, the inability of science to make public policy pronouncements, and the alleged connection between a healthy democracy and healthy citizens. Additionally, the ends-justify-the-means theme throughout the book is critiqued as an invalid form of constitutional interpretation
Comprehensive Guide for CTE Teachers: Implementing Functional Behavioral Assessments and Individualized Behavior Support Plans for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
The training and requirements for initial licensure of Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers exhibit considerable variation across states, potentially resulting in a limited familiarity with high-impact special education practices among CTE educators. Two critical practices within this domain are the conduct of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and the design of Individualized Behavior Support Plans (IBSPs). The FBA process entails a thorough, team-based approach to data collection and analysis aimed at identifying the underlying causes of behaviors that impede a student with a disability from achieving academic, social, emotional, and vocational objectives. Based on the insights derived from the FBA, a collaborative team of professionals formulates an intervention strategy to mitigate disruptive behaviors and foster alternative behaviors that enhance learning. CTE teachers who possess advanced knowledge of FBA and IBSP methodologies are positioned to engage effectively in these high-impact practices, thereby facilitating progress towards the academic, social, emotional, and vocational goals for all students with disabilities, with particular emphasis on those with intellectual and developmental disabilities
THE COMPETITIVE RESPONSE OF HEMP (CANNABIS SATIVA L.) WITH DIFFERENT AGRICULTURAL WEED SPECIES
The occurrence of weed species with hemp significantly affects the development and yield of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.). Three experimental studies were conducted to examine whether weed species like Amaranthus tuberculatus L., Eleusine indica L., Ipomoea spp. L. suppress the growth of hemp. The results show that the presence of these weed species was responsible for the reduced growth of hemp in terms of height, stem diameter number of leaves except when some weed densities were reduced with a grass-specific herbicide, but the weed species did not have any association with the N (nitrogen) and C (carbon) assimilation of hemp. Additionally, utilizing a de Wit replacement series design, a greenhouse study investigated the competitiveness of the two hemp cultivars ‘Jin Ma’ and ‘NWG’ and three weed species i.e., A. tuberculatus, Glycine max L., and Setaria faberi L. to see how they affect each other through both intra- and interspecific competition. The outcome demonstrated that the weed species were responsible for the loss of yield as well as suppressing the growth of hemp. However, there were some mixtures where the plants were overyielding as well as the effects of two different hemp cultivars varied in response to the three weed species. Moreover, the effect of the three weed species was different based on hemp cultivars and mixture. These two studies suggest that controlling the weedy species in hemp fields is important to reduce the loss of hemp yield. Additionally, another separate greenhouse study looked at the accumulation of Trigonelline (TRG) in the leaves of two hemp cultivars ‘Jin Ma’ and ‘NWG’. The finding of this experiment demonstrates that the amount of TRG varies between when the plants grow under control and drought stress treatment. However, the two cultivars did not vary in terms of TRG accumulation. The three experimental studies showed that weeds have a significant effect on hemp growth parameters, and the accumulation of trigonelline varies based on drought conditions
Assessing Changes in Permethrin Toxicity to Juvenile Inland Silversides (Menidia beryllina) Under Different Temperature Scenarios
Aquatic systems are impacted by temperature fluctuations which can alter the toxicity of pesticides. Increased temperatures have elevated pest activity, resulting in an escalation of pesticide use. One such pesticide class, pyrethroids, has replaced the use of several banned pesticides due to its low mammalian toxicity. The impacts of increased temperatures on the toxicity of a pyrethroid, permethrin, to fish is not yet known. In the current study, juvenile inland silversides (Menidia beryllina) were exposed to permethrin at three temperatures: 10°C, 20°C, and 30°C. Permethrin toxicity was significantly different among each temperature and showed an inverse relationship with temperature. As temperatures fluctuate, fishes experience a change in respiration, biotransformation, and elimination rates, which can drive the noted difference in toxicity. Based on these findings, toxicity can be temperature dependent and should be considered when assessing risk of exposure to pesticides in aquatic systems
