Comparing Conventional and Alternative Mechanisms of Discovering and Accessing the Scientific Literature
This study compares the bibliographic and full-text coverage of 15 conventional and alternative discovery/access mechanisms: two multidisciplinary library databases (Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection), five single-subject databases, the integrated library search (ILS) mechanism of Manhattan University, a scholarly search engine (Google Scholar), two web-based scholarly databases (Dimensions and OpenAlex), two academic social networks (Academia.edu and ResearchGate), and two pirate sites (Anna’s Archive and Sci-Hub). The analysis is based on known-item searches for 875 target documents in chemistry, materials science, cardiology, public health, economics, education, and psychology. Overall, Google Scholar, OpenAlex, and the ILS are the most comprehensive sources of bibliographic records. Google Scholar’s coverage rate is higher than that of all the Manhattan University databases combined, and Scopus—the most comprehensive multidisciplinary library database—has a lower bibliographic coverage rate than Google Scholar, both of the web-based scholarly databases, one of the two ASNs, and one of the two pirate sites. In terms of full-text coverage, the best multidisciplinary options are the ILS, Google Scholar, and the two pirate sites. Although several of the alternative discovery/ access mechanisms are deficient in terms of their user interfaces, search capabilities, and metadata, they nonetheless provide excellent bibliographic and full-text coverage of the scholarly literature. In contrast, many single-subject library databases provide very incomplete coverage of their own subject areas. These findings have implications for scholars and students as well as system-wide implications for the use, development, and evaluation of information resources
REALIZATION OF SIMPLE SMALE FLOWS IN S^3 USING 3-BAND TEMPLATES
This dissertation investigates non-singular Smale flows with saddle sets modeled byspecific templates, focusing on their structural configurations. In particular, we examine the linking relationships between the attractor and repeller in simple Smale flows, especially when chaotic saddle sets are represented by various template models. By analyzing these template-based structures, we aim to provide new insights into the organization and behavior of Smale flows on the 3-sphere
“For There is Hope of a Tree…”: A Study of Two Historic African American Cemeteries in Pope County, Illinois
To add to a growing body of academic literature regarding historic African American cemeteries, this study examines two such cemeteries located in Pope County, Illinois: the Miller Grove Cemetery and the Hill Cemetery. Utilizing several different investigative methods, including pedestrian survey, geophysical survey, and historic research, the archaeological features and material culture of both cemeteries were studied to see what could be learned about their associated communities without ground disturbance. The results of these methods demonstrate the connections of members within these communities and the interconnectedness of historic African American settlements throughout southern Illinois and the greater Midwest. They also reveal how these connections, forged through blood, bond, and shared meanings, assisted these communities in navigating racism through the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Justin Aitken is a standup comedian who survived a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Madison, Wisconsin. This shooting killed his partner Jamie and management team, which he is still in grief group for and experiences flashbacks of. Faced with survival and with disgust at his old vocation for being frivolous and leading to harm, he takes a job in the nonprofit sphere trying to get reforms passed that would make mass shootings a thing of the past. However, a growing ache to get back on stage and a chance to reconnect with a lost love drive Justin back into the lifestyle he left behind. Facing new virality, he gets the chance to perform for the new Democratic president who he views as ineffectual at best. Although this would lead to a compromise in what he views as his values, his new boyfriend, Shane, pushes him into it
TAKE A CHANCE ON MATT: A BIG STORY ABOUT “LITTLE WOMEN”
I held the role of technical director for Southern Illinois University’ Fall 2022 production of Little Women: the Musical. This document details the technical design process beginning April 2022 through opening December 9th, 2022.The first chapter explains my research in the biography of the authors, analysis of the play structure and past productions, as well as personal goals for this production. The second chapter is a detailed breakdown of weekly design meetings held with production design team members to refine the overall scope of the production. The third chapter is a summary of the production process, and the work completed each week. The fourth and final chapter is a review of my work completed throughout this process and an evaluation of the goals, stated in chapter one, were applied. The appendices contain all relevant and related paperwork necessary to the design and production process. This includes inspiration imagery from design team members, research imagery, build calendars, labor and material bid forms, construction build plates, and final production photographs
AUTHENTICATION FOR IOT DEVICES TO ACCESS SATELLITE NETWORKS
Security and privacy concerns in modern computational environments necessitate robust authentication mechanisms to safeguard sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access. This thesis focuses on two critical aspects of secure authentication validating user legitimacy before granting network access and ensuring robust security measures throughout data transmission. To achieve these objectives, a secure authentication protocol is proposed, leveraging cryptographic techniques such as hashing, symmetric encryption, and dynamic pseudonyms. The protocol ensures mutual authentication and secure session key exchange while preserving user anonymity and preventing identity tracking. By incorporating a secure initialization phase, user registration, and a mutual authentication key exchange (MAKE) process, the proposed scheme effectively mitigates security threats, including replay attacks, impersonation, and man-in-the-middle attacks. Additionally, the use of lightweight symmetric cryptographic operations enhances efficiency, making the protocol suitable for low-power and resource-constrained environments
HYBRID TRANSFORMERS AND CLASSIFIERS FOR MALICIOUS URL DETECTION
In the fast-growing era of cybersecurity effectively identifying malicious URLs is very important to protecting users from the threats like phishing and malware. Traditional URL detection methods often rely on manually generated features and heuristic approaches which are increasingly inadequate against sophisticated cyberattacks. For addressing the challenges faced by the traditional models our research introduces a new model that combines the strengths of two advanced transformer-based language models called BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and BART (Bidirectional and Auto-Regressive Transformers). BERT is proficient at understanding the context of words within a given sentence using its bidirectional training and capturing the relationships in the data. data. BART excels in the sequence-sequence tasks very effectively and helps in reconstructing the corrupted text sequences which is very important in understanding the sequential nature of the URL. Our approach aims to enhance the accuracy and robustness of the malicious URL detection system. We conducted extensive experiments on a diverse dataset comprising both malicious and benign URLs to evaluate the efficacy of our hybrid model. The implications of this research are substantial. By harnessing the capabilities of BERT and BART, cybersecurity systems can more effectively identify and mitigate threats posed by malicious URLs, thereby providing enhanced protection for users against evolving cyber threats. This study underscores the importance of adopting advanced machine learning models in the ongoing battle against cybercrime
Argentina\u27s Working Class and Milei
This paper investigates the electoral success of Javier Milei through a focused study of Argentina’s working class, analyzing the interplay between long-term economic stagnation, declining relative economic freedom, and static labor union policy support. Employing process tracing methodology, and drawing on both qualitative and quantitative data, the paper supports a shift in utility-maximizing political preferences among workers. This shift is evidenced by diminished labor union membership and influence, alongside Milei’s major electoral success. The analysis accounts for potential confounding variables, including global economic trends and informal labor growth, ultimately isolating domestic political-economic dynamics as primary drivers of this transformation
