An Induction Heating System for Plate Heating Applications Using a Double-D-shaped Auxiliary Work Coil
This letter proposes an induction heating system for plate heating applications using an auxiliary work coil with double-D shape (DD coil). In this system, the DD coil is arranged at the center of a circular work coil to facilitate the heating of the center area. This arrangement ensures magnetic decoupling of the two work coils. Hence, each converter of the work coils can operate independently. Additionally, this letter proposes an approach to control the eddy current interference in a workpiece by controlling the phase relationship of the coil currents. The analysis results show that the proposed system offers each work coil greater independence of heating while reducing uneven heating of the workpiece.公開日: 2025-07-01journal articl
A coral peptide with bactericidal activity against a global marine pathogen, Vibrio coralliilyticus
Rising seawater temperatures weaken coral immunity and increase the virulence of the coral pathogen Vibrio coralliilyticus. Here, we identified digitiferin, an antimicrobial peptide (AMP), in the coral, Acropora digitifera. Recombinant digitiferin showed antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. A 3D structural model and microscopic observations revealed that digitiferin damages bacterial surfaces. However, initial growth inhibition tests in 1.5% (w/v) NaCl showed no effect on pathogens. We found that digitiferin is secreted into mucus, where NaCl concentrations are lower than in seawater. Hence, we hypothesized that it is active against pathogens in low-salt environments. By re-evaluating under low-salt conditions, we discovered that digitiferin kills Vibrio species. Digitiferin homologs were found in multiple coral species, suggesting that digitiferin may serve as a first-line defense mechanism and determine disease susceptibility in corals. These findings enhance our understanding of coral-pathogen interactions and will facilitate the development of techniques to overcome Vibrio disease.公開日: 2025-09-19journal articl
Relationship between temperature and volume variations of the North Pacific Central Mode Water contrasting with Subtropical Mode Water
Relationships among the year-to-year variations in the volume, potential density, potential temperature, and salinity of the North Pacific Central Mode Water (CMW) are investigated via the Grid Point Values of the Monthly Objective Analysis using the Argo data. The CMW temperature and salinity vary synchronously with volume, whereas the CMW density shows variations that are negatively correlated with volume. That is, when the CMW volume is larger than normal, the mean CMW temperature and salinity are higher than normal, and when the CMW volume is smaller, the opposite is true. The relationships among the CMW properties and volume shown here have not been noted before. The CMW volume is primarily controlled by the depth of the upper boundary of the CMW layer, but the lower boundary does not have a significant influence on the volume variation. When the volume is larger, the upper boundary of the CMW layer becomes shallower to enclose warmer and lighter water in the upper part of the CMW layer, and when the volume is smaller, the opposite occurs. This CMW volume variation reflects the mixed layer properties in the probable formation region of the CMW in late winter. When the CMW volume is greater than normal, the net surface heat flux in the region is greater than normal, resulting in southward migration of the southern boundary of the CMW formation region, thus heaving the upper boundary of the CMW layer; during small CMW volume years, the opposite occurs.公開日: 2025-07-0620K0406022K0371623K03490journal articl
