AMA Divers Who Appeared in Research Studies from the Meiji to Pre-War Showa Periods: Why Had Only Female Divers Gotten Attention?
Get PDF素潜り漁業者の中で、なぜ、海女だけがメディアのみならず学術的な調査研究の対象として注目され続けてきたのか。本稿では、この問いを明らかにするために、明治期の政府・地方行政資料から、大正・昭和戦前期の学術的な調査研究に至るまで、そこに現れた海女の姿を系譜的に追った。先ず、明治期には、近代的な漁業技術の模索を伴って行われた明治政府や地方行政による漁業調査において、素潜りアマに対する男女の区別が特段の差異として認められなかった。しかしながら、大正期に入ると、近代的労働市場に組み込まれた女性労働者の身体的影響に関する対照項として、海女に注目が向けられていった。さらに昭和戦前期には、その眼差しが、労働科学や医学・生理学を通して、潜水労働者かつ婦人労働者たる海女に、そしてその身体に向けられていったのである。それと同時期、海女への関心は、国家主義に包摂される形でも特化され、消えゆく伝統文化への浪漫主義的な憧憬とともに生まれた民俗学という学問分野でも現れてきたのである。Why had only AMA divers gotten attention among free-diving fishers as the subject of academic research studies? In order to clarify this question, this paper genealogically traces the appearance of AMA divers in government and academic research studies from the Meiji to pre-war Showa periods. During the Meiji period, free-diving fishers began to attract attention as a result of fisheries surveys conducted by the Meiji government and local administrations out of a search for modern fishing techniques, and such free-diving fishers were not differentiated by gender. In the Taisho period, however, AMA divers as female workers attracted attention under the circumstance that women's labor was not inclusive of the modern labor market. Then, in the pre-war Showa period, AMA divers were the primary focus of attention through the disciplines of labor science and medicine/physiology, as a contrast regarding the physical effects of modern female workers.
