Harimaru: A new potato variety for a local specialty

    Get PDF
application/pdf‘Harimaru’ is a new potato variety bred from a cross between ‘Saikai 35’ as a female parent and ‘Pike’ as a male parent. Marker selection was performed for 1,647 seedlings to combine resistance genes to late blight (R1), Potato virus Y (Rychc), Potato virus X (Rx1), and golden cyst nematode (H1). In total, 194 selected clones were evaluated in the field, among which the best clone was officially released as ‘Harimaru’. Its yield was slightly lower than the local standard variety, ‘May Queen’. However, it produces tasty potatoes, that do not become mushy with long boiling times despite its high starch content. ‘Harimaru’ may become a local specialty potato and its multiple resistance to potato viruses may allow cultivation using homemade seed tubers from the previous season’s crop. © 2018, Japanese Society of Breeding. Serological and molecular surveys of babesia bovis and babesia bigemina among native cattle and cattle imported from thailand in hue, Vietnam

    Get PDF
application/pdfSerum and DNA from blood samples collected from Vietnamese yellow cattle (n=101) and cattle imported from Thailand (n=54) at a Vietnamese slaughter house were screened for Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina infections by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and PCR. The positive rates determined by ELISA (B. bovis and B. bigemina) or PCR (B. bigemina) in the Vietnamese cattle were significantly higher than those found in Thai cattle. Some PCR-positive Vietnamese animals were ELISA-negative, whereas all PCR-positive Thai cattle were ELISA-positive, suggesting that the animals were infected in Thailand. Importing Babesia-infected cattle may lead to the introduction of new parasite strains, possibly compromising the development of anti-Babesia immune control strategies in Vietnam. © 2018 The Japanese Society of Veterinary Science.journal articl

Characterization of the suppressive effects of extremely-low-frequency electric fields on a stress-induced increase in the plasma glucocorticoid level in mice.

application/pdfWe recently suggested that an increase in the plasma glucocorticoid (GC) level in immobilized mice is suppressed by a 50-Hz electric field (EF) in an EF strength-dependent manner. The present study aimed to assess the anti-stress effect of EFs in three scenarios: exposure to an EF of either 50 or 60 Hz, which are the standard power frequencies in most regions; varying levels of environmental brightness during EF exposure; complete or partial shielding of the mouse from the EF. We compared the GC levels and blood parameters among control, EF-alone, immobilization-alone, and co-treatment groups. There was no difference between EFs of 50 and 60 Hz in terms of the suppression of the immobilization-induced increase in GC, that is, the anti-stress effect upon EF exposure. Examination of the effects of three environmental illuminance levels, 0, 200, and 490 lux, revealed that the effect of the EF was influenced by environmental illuminance. Shielding of the mice from the EF by wrapping the animals with an electrically conductive sheet inhibited the EF effect, which showed a negative correlation with the area shielded. Hence, environmental illuminance and the body area exposed to the EF might influence the effects of an EF on stress-induced increases in plasma GC levels in mice. Because stress plays an important role in the onset and progression of various diseases, these findings may have broad implications for understanding the efficacy of EFs in health.

    Get PDF

Milk Processing System in Barbasia of Sardinia (Italy), Mediterranean Area

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe purpose of this paper is to 1) understand the cheesemaking process practiced in Sardinia, 2) analyze how the people utilized the ecology to mature cheeses in the summer heat, and 3) discuss the history of the development of matured cheeses in Sardinia, Italy. The matured hard cheese named Casu crudu (S)/Fiore Sardo (I) has processed in Sardinia by the pasta cruda method. The transhumant pastoralists in Sardinia used to immediately sell or consume the freshly-made cheeses in the winter and spring when they resided in the lowland. It was also possible to mature cheeses in the lowland, because the temperature was low in the winter and spring. In the hot and dry summer, they migrated to the highland and made matured cheeses as they utilized the cold environment of the highland and their cool residence. They coated the cheese surfaces with olive oil to keep the cheeses from drying and succeeded in maturing the cheeses. They were able to mature cheeses and cope with the Mediterranean climate of hot and dry summer by skillfully utilizing the vertical migration from their year-round transhumance. The geography of Sardinia (comprising of lowland and highland of over 1,000 m above sea level), use of the environment (grazing in the lowland in the winter and fall and in the highland in the summer), and the transhumant lifestyle all contributed to the creation of matured hard cheeses unique to Sardinia. journal articl

A 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant of saccharomyces cerevisiae shows enhanced maltose fermentative ability by the activation of mal genes

    Get PDF
application/pdfSaccharomyces cerevisiae MCD4 is a 2-deoxyglucose (2-DOG)-resistant mutant derived from the wild-type strain, AK46, wherein the 2-DOG resistance improves the maltose fermentative ability. In the MAL gene cluster, mutations were detected in MAL11 and MAL31, which encode maltose permeases, and in MAL13 and MAL33, which encode transcriptional activators. In maltose medium, the expression of MAL11 and MAL31 in MCD4 was 2.1 and 4.2 times significantly higher than that in AK46, respectively. Besides, the expression of MAL13 and MAL33 also tended to be higher than that of AK46. Although no mutations were found in MAL12 and MAL32 (which encode α-glucosidases), their expression was significantly higher (4.9 and 4.4 times, respectively) than that in AK46. Since the expression of major catabolite repression-related genes did not show significant differences between MCD4 and AK46, these results showed that the higher maltose fermentative ability of MCD4 is due to the activation of MAL genes encoding two maltose permeases and two α-glucosidases. © 2018 by the authors.
