    The Minnetrista Cultural Center

    The Ball brothers bought land along the White River in Muncie in 1893. They named the property Minnetrista, combining the Sioux word for water and “tryst” to mean “a gathering place by the water.” By 1907 all five brothers had built their homes on the property. In 1988 the Minnetrista Cultural Center opened on the site as a place to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.     A Sign Along a Beautified Hanna Avenue Announces the University’s Presence

    In 1902, the name was “Indiana Central University.” Soon ICU became popularly known as “Indiana Central College,” only to formally revert decades later to the “University” name. Then, at Commencement 1986, President Gene E. Sease announced the change to “University of Indianapolis,” capitalizing on the opportunity to signal the growth in the institution’s size and stature and link its future to Indiana’s emerging capital city.     Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this iconic building remains the nation’s oldest college basketball arena. The fieldhouse, which had remained unchanged for more than 60 years, was renovated in 1989.     Attention to detail extends to the costuming of the interpreters. IHS staff visits professional costumers and orders the clothing so the styles and fabrics are just right. From mechanics diagnosing a problem to a woman getting driving instruction, scenes such as these would have been common in the garage used by George Greenlee for his Ford dealership.     In June 2011, UE civil engineering students host the 24th annual American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition. UE is the smallest school ever invited to host the national event. Twenty-two teams from universities in the U.S. and Canada compete. Judging is based on a written report, a display, a presentation and the canoe race.
