T.C. Steele's House of the Singing Winds
Steele sold his share of The Hermitage to Adams and began searching for a new place to paint. It was then that he discovered the isolated hills of Brown County. He also found companionship with longtime friend Selma Neubacher and they married in 1907. Together they purchased land in Brown County and built a new home and a studio. They landscaped the surrounding hills and Selma created the gardens there. Ku Klux Klan Pamphlet - Exhibit Image Detail
The focus was on the garage and the people who worked there and frequented it. The citizens of Hartford City had to make a choice on whether or not to join the Ku Klux Klan. Staff chose to tell this story subtly by inserting a reproduction of a brochure in the mail slot of the garage. Our guests could find the brochure just as the mechanics might have found one. It gave interpreters a chance to explore this topic with guests in a way that might have been familiar to the townspeople.Destination Indiana - You Are There 1924: Tool Guys and Tin Lizzies Journe
