Parent Social Validity Ratings of Receiving Functional Communication Training
No full textThis applied dissertation was designed to provide greater insight on parent and caregiver views and perceptions on participating in functional communication training. While extensive research exists regarding the effectiveness of functional communication training and parent training in general for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, evidence on the social validity with respect to caregivers is lacking.
The researcher utilized evidenced-based social validity scales to explore parent/caregiver perceptions of receiving caregiver functional communication training, their perceived effectiveness of the treatment modality, and overall acceptance of the approach.
An analysis of the data revealed that parents’ overall perception was neutral regarding general views of the treatment; however, long term acceptance and continued implementation was less than favorable
Exploring Giftedness and the Gifted Learner in Education and Beyond: An Autoethnographic Study with Critical Friends
No full textThe concept of giftedness is complex, contested and evolving and may be thus frustratingly challenging to apply in practice. One area of emerging research is understanding the personal experiences of those who identify as gifted in order to better represent the myriad culturally diverse conceptions of giftedness that evolve over a lifetime. In this article, I employ an autoethnographic approach to explore aspects of my adult identity as an atypical learner. This journey unfolds in crafted vignettes that reveal the complexities and multi-dimensionality of my learning and are analysed using Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT). As I investigate my journey as a gifted lifelong learner at school, then as a teacher, teacher educator and corporate executive, three critical friends, the other authors of this paper, offer an etic perspective about my experiences of giftedness. The aim of the article is to illuminate the importance of examining personal experiences, stories and voice as a way of conceptualising giftedness, and to position giftedness as an evolving lifelong experience. In the article we offer several implications for the normalisation of giftedness in education which resonates into adulthood
Do Gender-Related Characteristics Impact Female Faculty Career Progression in Academic Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs?
No full textPurpose: This study explored the experiences of female faculty in academic Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs in the US and if gender, or more specifically any gender-related characteristics such as pregnancy or motherhood, impacts female faculty career progression. Evidence has demonstrated that several challenges disproportionately affect women in academia, but there is currently no research available related to female faculty experiences in academic DPT programs. Methods: This study used a qualitative research design with a descriptive statistics component. It utilized a descriptive, cross-sectional design with a nonexperimental survey methodology. The Culture Conducive to Women’s Academic Success instrument was used to gather quantitative data to establish a baseline for this population while one-on-one, semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data to further address the research questions. Results: One hundred ninety-two respondents answered the survey questionnaire. Of the 192 respondents, 24 were then interviewed for the qualitative component of the study. The study\u27s major findings concluded that supportive environments in both the work and home environments were major facilitators that contribute to female faculty\u27s career progression in DPT programs. Conclusion: It was also concluded that the barriers women encounter in academic career progression are different than what is experienced by their male counterparts. This study added to the literature on females and career progression in academia, specific to DPT programs, and can assist DPT programs in creating environments that support female faculty success and progression in their careers
Clinical Observation of Oral-Motor Dysfunction in Joubert Syndrome: Case Series
No full textPurpose: Joubert Syndrome (JS) is a rare autosomal recessive neurological disorder, characterized by hypotonia, ataxia, tremor, developmental delay. JS also presents with respiratory abnormalities, oculomotor apraxia, motor speech dysarthria, and various atypical dysmorphic features. Oral-motor dysfunction (OMD) is a notable concern in JS, manifesting as difficulties with sucking, swallowing, drooling, and prolonged meal times. Methods: This study investigates OMD in five JS cases evaluated by physiotherapists and assessed using the Oral-Motor Examination Tool (OMET). Results: The cases exhibited feeding-related stress symptoms such as gagging and reflux. OMET evaluations identified asymmetrical faces, puckered lips, open mouths, and lip biting, with normal palate structure and muscle tone. Slight lip withdrawal and moderate saliva were observed in two cases, while small tongue and soft palate asymmetry were found in three. Conclusion: These findings indicate that OMD is prevalent in JS, highlighting the need for early evaluation for patients exhibiting dysmorphic facial features
