A Qualitative Study on the Barriers and Facilitators of Integrating Women into the Firefighting Workforce: Perspectives of Men and Women
This study explores the barriers and facilitators of integrating women into the firefighting workforce, with insights drawn from both women and men firefighters in South Australia. The research focuses on challenges and supports encountered during recruitment and long-term retention of women in this male-dominated field. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with paid (career) firefighters, with a thematic analysis applied to transcriptions. Key themes identified included occupational challenges (barriers) such as lack of diversity, perception of women as “diversity hires,” ill-fitting uniforms and equipment, unconscious bias, and the hypermasculine culture of the workplace. Women also tended to cope with workplace trauma differently than men, seeking psychological support from female colleagues, while men often suppressed emotions. Non-occupational facilitators such as flexible rostering access to fitness programs, and lifestyle benefits including camaraderie within the workforce, were important in retaining both genders. However, the lack of accessible 24-hour childcare emerged as a significant barrier for women managing both work and caregiving responsibilities. We concluded that improving equipment fit, trauma support, inclusive recruitment and accessible 24-hour childcare are essential for increasing gender diversity in firefighting. These changes are key to retaining women in first responder roles and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the workforce

‘You’ and ‘We’ in #WomanLifeFreedom: A Corpus-based Discourse Analysis of Collective Identities and Speech Acts in the Twitter’s Discourse of Iranian Protests
This paper applies corpus linguistic discourse analysis to approach the social media discourse of a recent political movement in Iran, known as #WomanLifeFreedom and Mahsa Amini. The movement included vast protests in different parts of Iran and went viral on an international scale. Protesters relied heavily on social media, particularly Twitter, to determine strategies and support each other during the expansive calls. To address the discourse shaped in that platform, a corpus was compiled from the Twitter posts, named Mahsa Amini Tweets Corpus (MATC). Using this data collection and analysis method, the endeavour was to obtain a balance between quantitative and qualitative analyses, which did not receive due attention from the social scientists who have studied the movement ever since it took place. This paper addresses collective ‘you’ and ‘we’ identities through an elaborate analysis of speech acts. Overall, 11 speech act categories specified by first- and second-person plurals resurfaced, and their functions were extracted. Moreover, the identities that Twitter protesters had referred to were recognised to have inclusive and exclusive tendencies; therefore, the implications of forming conflict identities for protesters and Iranian society are discussed
The Circle of Life and Care
As a first-year medical student on the osteopathic path, my art is a reflection of my journey to balance creativity and the principles of holistic care. Osteopathic medicine’s focus on treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—aligns closely with my approach to art, which aims to capture the connections between humanity, healing, and empathy.
Through my work, I explore themes of care, connection, and the values I hope to uphold as a future physician. Whether it’s through symbolic imagery or simple, heartfelt compositions, my art reflects the importance of compassion and the human connection in both medicine and life.
For me, art is not only a creative outlet but also a way to reflect on the lessons I am learning in my medical journey. It helps me stay grounded in the values that matter most: listening, understanding, and treating people as more than their diagnoses. My hope is that my art serves as a reminder of the power of empathy and the importance of seeing the whole person—whether in the context of art, medicine, or everyday life
Cultural and Religious Perspectives on Suicide and Healing
This essay is built off of a paper I wrote in a college global health course on culture and mental illness. I have always been fascinated by cultural interpretations of illness & believe that as a future physician, it is my responsibility to educate myself and others on the complex interplay between religious ideologies & recognition/management of biological disease in order to provide appropriate patient-centered care
Layers
I titled this work “Layers,” symbolic of the many intricate layers to healing, just as we see the many literal layers of a landscape in this photograph. In the foreground, you are met with a firm, unforgiving boulder — almost analogous to how difficult the initial phase of healing can be, or the setbacks that may be experienced throughout a healing journey. Your eyes then drift on to find the abundance of evergreens, some vibrant and thriving, while others are in their last stages of life. Finally, the mountainous layers take shape before ascending into the sky. Just as nature experiences its own cycle to restore its natural balance, we each have our own mechanisms and sacred oath of healing that empowers us to do the same

Meeting Interprofessional Education Competencies Through a Multi-Scene Standardized Patient Simulation: A Pilot Study
Purpose. Healthcare is increasingly delivered by teams of diverse disciplines. Interprofessional education for healthcare students is essential so that when students enter their respective fields, they come prepared with experience in interdisciplinary communication, teamwork, and communication. Accreditation and regulatory requirements for health professions programs have also increased the focus on interprofessional collaboration, requiring programs to be creative in finding effective and efficient integration methods. The purpose of this pilot study was to identify the perceived impact of an interprofessional collaboration event on enhancing students’ interprofessional education competency attainment. Methods. An interprofessional collaboration committee created a multi-scene, unfolding case study scenario modeling direct patient care and case conferencing with graduate and undergraduate healthcare professions students and faculty at a single academic institution. The simulation involved a neurologically impaired standardized patient treated in three scenes across the continuum of care. Interdisciplinary groups were created for pre- and debriefing between and after each scene. A reliable and valid post-experience survey was utilized to assess students’ self-perceptions of IPE competencies, experiential feedback, and logistic feedback. Results. The simulation event increased perceived knowledge and understanding of all four IPEC competencies across disciplines. Qualitative feedback demonstrated enhanced student communication, collaboration, and role appreciation across disciplines, along with the importance of social work in patient care. Despite the challenges of scheduling and hosting an event for multiple health-related disciplines, this pilot study demonstrated that this interprofessional, multi-scene scenario was an efficient and effective opportunity for enhancing student perception of IPEC competency attainment to meet accreditation standards and promote improvement of patient care outcomes
