Red Crowned Cranes
(Venue) West wall, Caples Isermann Building, exterior of the drawing room.(Original Version) Mural was expected to remain for approximately two to five years, but was painted over by the school's new administration in July 2023, six months after its completion.(Funding) Created for Professor Kim Anderson's On Site/ Sight Mural Painting course(Internal Comments) "Celebrating Chinese culture at New College, my proposals highlight the Chinese and Asian literature, language, and heritage courses while connecting to my Chinese and Asian heritage. The red-crowned crane originates from the Northeast China, Eastern Japan, and Russia. The red-crowned crane symbolizes longevity and peace in Chinese culture and was selected because of New College's proximity to the bay and interest in birds and bird watching on campus. The red and warm-toned palette references the rich meaning of red in Asian visual culture, which is a symbol of luck, joy, and happiness while the chrysanthemum symbolizes happiness and vitality." -Annie Don
