UPDATES
Angelica: I talked to Jerry today and they’re looking at new ceramic ham plates. They break
easier but they’re also heavier. He’s thinking of one of the ones that cost $500. They’re $1.50
per plate. I feel like the heavier plates will last longer because people will be less inclined to
steal them. Also I know a lot of the dorms don’t have carpet so having a plate around like that
wouldn’t even be an advantage so people would bring them back just because people would be
afraid they would get broken. We should find out exactly how heavy they are. Also these ones
are white which are nice and boring and not exciting which means people won’t want them
around as much. He said some colors went much faster than others, like dark blue and jade
green.
Ethan: The fruit trees - there’s supposed to be someone from the Catalyst at the Landscape
meeting this morning and here now. Trying to see where we are on putting labels on the fruit
trees. Also seeing if we have a comprehensive map of the trees. If not I’ll ask Michael Williams,
see if we can get that and I’ll make it more public.
Niko: Somebody messaged me to tell me about an invasive plant removal.
Ethan: Which plant is it?
Niko: There’s this event called Take Back our Park at North Water Tower park Oct. 19. Do you
think this is something you’d be interested in trying to organize something around, Vanessa?
Vanessa: That’s during fall break.
Angelica: That would work as like an Alternative Fall break kinda thing.
Vanessa: I’ll be here but I know campus can be pretty empty. By that time some people might be
back on campus so it might be worth trying to organize an event, I’ll think about it.
Niko :It looks like the weekend after fall break, some people will still be gone. I’ll forward you the
info. It seems like a good thing to do.
Aaron: Did you talk about how Zack Poe was thinking of redoing positions? During the last CSA
meeting Zack Poe brought up that it might be a good idea to trim the CSA and remove positions
that aren’t completely necessary, one because a lot of people aren’t going and two because it’s
hard to get stuff done with such a big body, and three some positions don’t need to be there are
the arguments he’s bringing up. That might affect us, or get rid of one or two green reps.
Angelica: I think he was gonna ask the people themselves if they wanted to hold their positions.
I saw his point but a lot of it was people aren’t coming to meetings.
Vanessa: So the Green Affairs didn’t used to be required to attend those meetings. When Niko
and I had those, it was introduced later on that we would need to go. They wouldn’t need to
eliminate those positions to decide that you aren’t necessary positions.
Angelica: We could also have it so like, only one has to attend a meeting.
Niko: Can you just make it very clear to Zack that he should not eliminate any positions in the
CGA before talking to me?
Aaron: He’s not going to. He was just talking about it. I talked to him afterwards and his
reasoning for the green affairs rep was that the green affairs rep used to be really important
because we didn’t have a CGA, but now that we do have a CGA...
Angelica: We’ve had the Green Affairs rep along with the CGA. It never existed before the CGA.
Ethan: It seems like he’s trying to eliminate positions in the CSA, not cut them. Just for the
meetings.
Niko: It sounds like it’s probably not an issue. If it is, he’ll talk to us. I don’t think we need to
discuss it. Any other items before we get to the green fee workshop?
Ethan: The landscape meeting? There’s a lot of things we went over. Nothing pressing.
Niko: On our last agenda item. I think we can end this meeting really early, have a more full
meeting next week. This is a really hectic week for me. For the Green Fee workshop, we’re
doing it in Palm Court. I went to shannon today and I put in the event request, and we’re getting
some tables, and I can use my discretionary for food, so we don’t need to put that request. I
have flyers we printed out today, however I looked at the weather and it’s supposed to rain
every day until -
Ryan: December!
Niko: - the 26th, which is a day beforehand. For now, let’s put these posters in places inside.
Can I just give these out to whoever wants them and we’ll put them out in our own free time?
*General agreement*
Ryan: Do you still need me to change the date on them?
Niko: No, I did that. I’m really lousy at Photoshop. I’m gonna take four, maybe...let’s talk four
each. Important locations are Ham, ACE building. Those are probably the two most important.
Ryan: Also mail room, laundry rooms, common room. I’ll put a bunch up as well.
Niko: Does anyone want to say anything about how they want to see the workshop structured?
In the past we basically would have some people give presentations of what the green fee is
and what past allocations were, then have break out groups and just have discussion about
what potential other projects we could do and then convene and discuss and put together a list
of cool directions we could take it in. This is also the initial workshop, we usually have a few. It’s
only September and it’s due in February. Are there other things anybody wants to do?
Ryan: I liked how last year we did break out groups and talked out some ideas in our heads. I
thought that was really productive. My group thought about different sustainability goals at NCF
and developed a couple of ideas that were useful. It’s also fun.
Niko: Anybody have cool ideas for food to bring? The sushi? Since this is coming out of my
discretionary, that’ll be easy, I’ll just get Dawn to give you $40. Are there any other things that
we would like to see - it seems like this is a pretty mellow event. It’s not new so we don’t have to
put a ton of effort into it. Are there other things people would like to see us do this semester?
Nothing. We won’t do anything.
Angelica: I feel like all the exciting things have been taken. A lot of the things we want to do are
really big projects that’ll take more time now. I’m sure there are things none of us have thought
of but I feel like a lot of them are the really most obvious ones.
Ethan: I guess I’ll be working mostly with the landscape committee but we’re working on getting
a lot of trees. We’re trying to get volunteers and get some donation from the Alumnae
foundation.
Niko: Maybe one behind the bus stop? Also if you could raise at the landscape meeting. I’ve
planted six fruit trees by hand and they’re the only trees Physical Plant doesn’t take care of, and
they’ve established well and it would be nice to know when I leave Physical Plant will take care
of them. Also, Sam and Dan have a lot of grand plans for the reserve funds we have and CITF
funds, and we’re gonna meet sometime and try to plan some big thing for solar water heating
and incorporating that into an incorporating green fund. We talked briefly about it. Okay, cool, is
that is?
Aaron: One minor point. Do we have canopy tents available to set up for the green fee
workshop in palm court?
Niko: No.
Angelica: The NCSA should get tents. There are plenty of events where we would need tents -
like club fair. We could use some of the reserve fund to buy tents.
Niko: For this specific event I set the rain reserve for HCL7 and if it looks like it’s gonna rain, we
can send an email out that we’re moving it. Cool.
Angelica: I think these posters don’t mention that there’s free food.
Ryan: Actually yeah, free sushi is a pretty good incentive. Draw it in in crayon.
Niko: Unless there’s anything else, it looks like that’s it. Remember to put these up. One thing is
in like most of the events, the one thing that we’ve been terribly late on is putting flyers up. So
let’s just put these up as soon as possible. I would like to do this round and then put more flyers
up like three days beforehand. And I’ll send out a forum post soon.
Ryan: We can also change design a few days out and that way people will notice them.
Niko: Is that Ryan volunteering to make another poster.
Ryan: I haven’t done photoshop in like a year... I can try. Yeah.

Meeting begins at 8:30
UPDATES
Ryan- BIKESHARE : Collin wants to do a once a semester rental program which is the exact opposite of
what we want to do.
Brad What was the program?
Ryan: The bike share program is trying to create a computer program to do the check out work for  the
fitness center so their workload is reduced
Niko: Did you propose this to Collin?
Ryan: Not yet, I’m trying to get   better idea of the program.
Aaron: The fitness center rep doesn’t quite understand the program completely
**A collective murmur of, “Huh? What? Eh?” **
Ryan: Jenine is in charge of this thing and right now they are recording who checks them out at what
time and whether or not they are returned.
Aaron: Jenine is my roommate so I’ll talk to her. (So convenient wow)
Niko: We’ll stay tuned in for updates then.
Ryan: Yep! Next week! It sounds like this will not become a reality until after spring break.
Aaron:  Or over spring break I can do it .
Rya: sure, cool!
Dylan: I will have have the info  on the library delamping by next week
COMFORIMATION FOR ALLOCATION THURSDAY
Niko: This is to accommodate Amber’s schedule to talk about the LED exit sign to meet at Thursday, 4:00
pm. Just wanted to confirm.
Ryan: Can’t make it, you can cut me out for it.
Angelica: How about five so all the voting members can be present.
Niko: That sounds fine.
Dylan: I forgot I was a voting member

ENERGY CONSERVATION PROJECT
Niko: Angelica, have we concluded the topic?
Angelica: At this point I thought we were going to do an initiative thing. We wanted to brainstorm how
we are going to do the entire thing and how to get people to be more encouraged  to save energy.
Brad: What happened to the green slips in mailbox?
Niko: I was thinking we can print out the sustainability guides because I have updated them recently.
Ryan: UF has a green guide and it is very organized. You can facebook search UF green guide and get
some ideas from them.
Dyaln: Maybe we can meet over the weekend for this. Niko, Dylan, and Angelica will try to help out.
Ryan:I can try!
THE ENVIROMENTAL STUDIES Symposium
Niko: Skipping until Taylor is here. Has Sam and Forrester have attended previous meeting?
THE GREAT SUNFLOWER PROJECT
Destinee: Pollinator population is rapidly declining. If we plant pollinator friendly flowers, we can record
this data and help this. This will be a good way for students to get  involved!
Ben: If you go the native plant restoration area there are a lot of bees there and you can track them
there. So we can try that.
Angelica: They mentioned that you can use any sort of plant.
Brad mentions something about a loud lady???
Niko: Do you know Audra? Audra is the garden TA and you can talk to her and you can talk to her about
the caples community garden. As far as a project goes I’m down. And I think we can do a native plant
thing and encourage native plant growth.
Aaron: Do you know that place behind the library with the flowers? We can plant places there.
Sam: Pei planters can be good source!
Angelica: Its hard to depend on students to maintain plants and we already do have flowering plants and
you can find out what flowers attract a certain bee.
Destinee: I think if students really care about this issue and join this, we wouldn’t have to worry about
depending on students.
Aaron: This may be a crazy idea but we used to have a water fountain in the pei court and I wonder if the
water timer is there and we can set up a bed of flowers were there.
***Another mention about loud lady and I am confused***
Brad: Create a plan and organize and make sure you have everything in order so we can get this going!
Destinee: I just wanted your feedback and since I have support then we can make this happen. I was
thinking we can maybe intertwine this with Earth Day.
GOAL BRAINSTORM:
Dylan: SMASH THE OIL INDUSTRYYYY
*We really liked this goal*
Ryan: Can we just smash the entire oil industry?? But speaking of which, we should set a goal to reduce
automobile use by students.
Aaron: can we reduce light pollution?
**This got a bunch of snapz and also YESSSSS**
Dan: we should come up with a way to measure if people are driving less
Ryab: One thing I plan is to put out a survey on transportation by student and see how often they drive
and keep an eye on cars that are brought on campus every year. We can reduce the number by spreading
awareness on the  bike program and different alternatives.
Angelica: Car pooling is better. I rather promote car pooling than stop care use completely.
Dylna: So Elaine and Jason has this project where u-HAUL lend some cars based on demand.
Ryan : I have heard of this and they keep them on campus?
Dyaln :Yes.
Ryan: I want to  see this happen I would love to work with this.
Ryan: It depend on rentals. Can we add car share on campus a goal?
Brad: Can we improve food with sodexo?
Angelica: Yes I would like for them to be more sustainable.
Destine: Paint recycle bins. CAN WE TACKLE THIS ALREADY.
**Collective “yeaahhhss” and “ughhhs” **
Angelica: We should add more awareness for recycling and additional information.
Destinee: Where are the compost bins in ham?
Niko: Compost bin is outside ham
Aaron: Recycling bin in letter dorms - who sorts the materials?
Ben: In most places they are working on single stream and sort them elsewhere.
Brad: Marine ecology going with the bay?
Destinee: Talk to Gilchrist, possible bay clean up.
Niko: I want to create a green revolving fund.
Angelica: What about bike shelters?
Ryan: Bike shelters are really expensive but we can use other areas and put them into use.
Niko: There are people who are not showing up so if you see people, (Forrestor lol)  tell them to come
up. If you are an elected or appointed member or else you can be removed from your position. Next
week we can have a full meeting and narrow goals down and get some updates!!

Members present: Niko, Taylor, Aaron, Ethan, David, Angelica, Ryan
UPDATES:
Taylor: We should have our next Green Fee workshop before winter break. I’m pretty sure we’ve
always had two, right?
Niko: Yeah. That would probably mean three, we probably want to have another one before the
deadline. But I’m down to do one before that. Yeah, any brief or not brief updates?
David: I have a small update for the compost. The little tin that covers the composter got bent
out of shape with the rain. We’re using a tarp to cover it for now but I’m thinking of creating a low
cost solution by putting 4x4 post around the compost site and putting screws in to put a tarp
around them, so that we only have to replace the tarp.
Niko: I have a discretionary, which we can use to make something that lasts instead of a
temporary shelter.
David: I’ll find out how much 4x4 wood I need and how much that costs and I’ll bring that next
week probably. I don’t think it’ll be too much.
Niko: There was a bald eagle that was chilling outside B-dorm today. Not important but really
cool. It was being chased by hawks. It was like shrieking. It was so cool. But I’ve also been
preoccupied with the police situation so I haven’t been able to put as much effort into this as I
would like. That’s my updates.
Angelica: Is Green Fee workshop follow up an agenda item or an update? I submitted an
agenda item.  Also, Ham plate update. We have 95 plates out of 120. We have more in boxes in
the back not being used, but we’ve already lost 25 plates.
Niko: That’s pathetic. I don’t understand what’s happening to them. Maybe we can put
permanent signs on trash cans and the doors so when people are leaving Ham, they can see
the signs.
Angelica: Yeah, Anna is supposed to be using marketing and I think we can work with her for
that.
Niko: Would you like to ask her about that?
Angelica: Yeah. I have a feeling that if we can’t keep these plates in Ham, we might not have
reusable plates. I know Jerry for once is like, guys this keeps happening. This happens faster
every time.
David: I think the only way to keep plates is to really aggressively tackle people.
Niko: For now I might just print out some signs in the mac lab and put them up.
Angelica: I think for the most part people are just taking them back to the room and using them
as plates for the dorm.
Aaron: Other colleges I’ve been to that have reusable plates - it’s less of a problem for them
because they only have one entrance or exit to the cafeteria, whereas in Ham it’s so open.
Angelica: Yeah. There’s a lot of ways you can leave Ham and totally forget that you have a
plate. We can’t fix that though.
Niko: Well I’m gonna print out mad signs. What about the recycling bins, though?
Angelica: I noticed that the bins closer to the boar’s head, you find that the trash doesn’t have
any recycling in it, but if you get towards the silo, sometimes people will drink their drink and just
throw out recyclables. I saw like two or three, which isn’t a lot but over a bunch of days really
adds. Even just one recycling bin over there will help alleviate that problem.
Niko: You can probably just move the recycling bin over there and no one would move it back.
You should just move it.
Angelica: Cause I saw that and was like, this isn’t a big problem but it’s one of those things.
Ryan: Bikes are now in circulation. We have like five of them with locks. The new lights are not
installed yet. I’m either gonna spend an extra couple days during or the week after fall break
getting all the lights + baskets on and have everything up and running and work out any kinks in
the system.
Niko: I’ll be here fall break, I can help you with stuff.
AGENDA
Niko: Following up for green fee workshop. We have a lot of cool projects here but some things
we mentioned don’t cost money. Those things are - there are a lot of things we should think
about now even if they do cost money, like horticulture, so we should definitely stop thinking
about that. Relay rides don’t cost anything. If it’s something we might wanna do we could send
out a survey for it.
Ryan: That’s what I’ll do. I’ll do either a survey or a forum post. If that doesn’t work, I’ll probably
do a survey and try to gauge demand and go back if the forum post doesn’t work. That’s on my
fall break list.
Niko: So there’s that stuff. And I think generally when we’re thinking about recycling bins, it
probably would cost to do a project but I think a lot of the work is figuring out if we wanna redo
the recycling system to figure out...
Angelica: I was looking at the Sarasota website and from what i could discern, it seems like it’s
paper and then all other recyclables, so it’s two-stream. Cardboard and paper. I looked at it and
it said it was the same for everything, so I’m assuming our school would be the same as well.
David: I’m going to physical plant in the next couple days to figure out how much we pay for
waste removal, so why I’m there I’ll try to ask them exactly how our waste is divided and how
recycling is handled as well.
Niko: It seems like this is the fifth time you’ve asked and they’ve never given you a straight
answer. So I also made a list of other things that we talked about that might be substantial
infrastructural improvements and send it to Physical Plant. Solar panels at Ham, AC updates in
Pei, switching outdoor lighting, rainwater collection, more efficient irrigation, recycling bin stuff.
Everything else I don’t think Physical Plant is quite involved in.
Aaron: I’m curious about the rainwater collection, is there more description to that?
Taylor: The girl who wrote it down said she envisioned barrels.
Niko: I think the most sensible way we can use it is at the Caples garden. I think somebody also
mentioned underground rainwater collection, but that’s like a big deal.
David: Mike Williams came in, he had a brochure for groundwater collection systems he was
hoping to put in.
Niko: Do you know anything about the cost of that?
David: I can go back and ask him.
Ethan: That’s something to ask the landscape committee. There’s not a lot of things here that
are irrigated.
Niko: Do you want to also talk to him about acquiring trees?
Ethan: Yeah, that’s on my list.
Niko: So I don’t know if  there are any specific projects people are interested in. I’m personally
interested in solar trash compactors. So I might start looking into those, but i also have on the
list things like maturation bins, we could definitely do that. And then there’s also the uhaul car
program. I emailed them and they haven’t gotten back to me yet. Are there other specific
projects people are interested in.
Aaron: I’m interested in the light pollution project.
Niko: OK, cool. Anybody else?
Ethan: Trees for me.
Taylor: What light pollution?
Niko: It involved changing our outdoor lighting to make it more efficient and directed at the
ground.
Taylor: OK, because I encountered several parents who said they think the campus is too dark.
Niko: Yeah, it just means the light would be directed downwards, not less.
Ethan: I was gonna respond to that - I think the Bayfront campus has had a problem keeping
lights on when they’re supposed to go on, but I think that’s fixed now.
Niko: Ethan, I remember reading in one of the old climate action plans that they looked at the
feasibility of changing lighting but I’m gonna send you that so you can look into it. Any other
stuff?
Angelica: Didn’t Dylan say he originally wanted to do the recycling overhaul? I remember that. I
don’t want to take it, I can work with him if he’s still interested. I don’t wanna put it forth if he
didn’t actually say that though.
David: I think he did.
Taylor: I would peg him as a recycling guy.
Niko: I wanted to mention that we need to do one more round of compost bin distribution over
fall break. Hopefully this will be the last round.
