Correcting Forward Head Posture and Rounded Shoulders in Collegiate Dancers: Strengthening versus Manual Release
Forward Head Posture (FHP) is described as a misalignment in the cervical spine that moves the head into the anterior space of the body often accompanied with rounded shoulders (RS). As the use of technology and personal devices increase, the rates of FHP are also increasing. This common misalignment can cause damage to the spine and ultimately lead to increased risk of injury. Correct posture is the first defense against injury in dancers. In addition, dancers with FHP and RS are not aesthetically acceptable according to dance technique standards. Therefore, this study will impact dancers who want to improve their posture and decrease injury during high intensity dance routines. There is currently a lack of research and data on FHP in dancers. This study will provide more information on FHP in the dancer population. The main goal is to determine if strengthening or manual release techniques will have the greatest improvement in decreasing the degree of FHP. This study utilized intervention sessions to manipulate change in FHP and RS. Thirty-nine dance students between the ages of 18-24 were recruited and randomly divided into three groups: Strengthening, Manual Release, and Control. All groups participated in the pre-test and post-test including a FHP & RS survey, a postural analysis, and FHP measurements. During the 8-weeks, the intervention groups attended 3 sessions each week. The Strengthening group utilized TheraBands and a Pilates tower to complete Pilates based exercises. The exercises increased in repetitions and resistance over the course of the 8 weeks. The Manual Release group utilized a Pinky Ball and combination of stretches to release the trapezius, pectoralis muscles, and posterior occipitals. At the end of the study all participants in both groups noted improvement in FHP, however, there was not a significant statistical difference between intervention groups. The average of the strength groups improvement was greater (M = 6.64, SD = 4.92) than the manual group (M = 5.33, SD = 2.81) and the control group (M = 4.25, SD = 4). The results of this study showed that the Strengthening Pilates exercises provided the greatest improvement in FHP. However, both techniques had some positive effect on FHP and RS.
Multi-Evidence Natural Language Inference for Clinical Trial Data
With the increasing number of clinical trials being conducted and published as lengthy natural language articles, healthcare practitioners face a challenge in extracting relevant information to assist individualized treatment.
The primary objective of this study is to determine entailment or contradiction between a premise (clinical trial reports) and hypothesis (assumption) and outputting a series of facts that can support reasoning.
To achieve the research objectives, the study utilizes a dataset of Breast Cancer clinical trial reports. The findings of this research can have the potential to greatly enhance healthcare practitioners ability to relate the most current evidence to assist individualized treatment in the medical field
