    The Portrayal of Hispanics' Health in the Media

    This project examined how different health disparities within the Hispanic community are viewed from the perspective of modern-day media. The media has played an integral role in providing information to the nation over the last several decades. Thus, it is vital to understand what true role media plays in presenting public national and international health issues specific to the Hispanic community. This media can be in the form of popular news outlets, social media platforms, television programs, etc. The purpose of this project is to determine how the health of Hispanics is portrayed as a result of this media influence. I actively achieved this through analyzing how different pieces of literature and media sources present information about the health of the Hispanic population in the United States. This can help public health practitioners understand how to address some health concerns in this population of individuals. This can also help influence efforts to pass laws that will help Hispanics obtain better health resources to improve their overall well-being of life for themselves, their families, and future generations. We will also be able to understand which specific barriers impede the communication that is given about Hispanic health. By having a deeper knowledge of these additional problems, we can work towards addressing them at the local, state, and national levels while simultaneously learning how to accurately inform the public on health issues in the Hispanic community

    Behavioral and Mechanistic Characterizatons of Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia: A Focus on the Gut Microbiota

    Opioids, a class of potent analgesics, are a treatment option that helps millions of chronic pain sufferers every day. A side effect of opioids that limits their effectiveness for chronic pain patients is opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH). OIH is a paradoxical condition in which patients taking the drugs for pain relief experience more pain directly due to the drugs. Although animal models of OIH exist, they are not suitable for long-term studies and their clinical relevance is questionable. In this study, a new mouse model of OIH is generated to address these issues. To induce hyperalgesia, animals are treated with morphine daily at a constant moderate dose. To add clinical relevance to the model, morphine treatment is started after the animals sustain a nerve injury to the infraorbital nerve. We show that this model can produce hyperalgesia as measured by mechanical pain behavioral testing for as long as the morphine treatment is continued. We also confirm the model is applicable to another opioid, fentanyl. Using this model, we next set out to determine if the gut microbiota is involved in OIH. First, we test the effect of modulating the gut microbiota by placing animals on the ketogenic diet after they start showing symptoms of OIH. We find that the ketogenic diet can reduce pain in OIH. The role of the gut microbiota is then further confirmed by ablating it and by performing fecal microbiome transplantation. Next, we determine what changes morphine treatment, and the ketogenic diet are having on the microbiota through 16S rRNA sequencing. Through sequencing, short chain fatty acids are identified as potential molecules involved in OIH. Exogenous short chain fatty acid treatment is then used in our model to show that short chain fatty acids can reduce and delay the development of OIH
