Economic Indicators of the College Station-Bryan MSA, September 2024
The Business-Cycle Index increased 0.5% from June 2024 to July 2024. The local unemployment rate remained steady at 3.2% in July 2024 compared to June 2024. Local nonfarm employment increased by 0.5% from June 2024 to July 2024. Inflation-adjusted taxable sales decreased by 0.3% from June 2024 to July 2024. Inflation-adjusted quarterly wages increased by 3.1% from the previous quarter. Poverty rates for college towns are overstated. Our Modified Poverty Measure for College Station Bryan, which excludes college students, was 12.3%, compared to the Official Poverty Measure of 21.6%
Examining the Effect of Measure Length on Cognitive and Non-Cognitive Scores and the Resulting Psychometric Properties in Low-Stakes Settings
The present study examined the effect of measure length on (a) careless responding on a noncognitive measure, (b) performance scores on a cognitive ability measure, and (c) the resulting psychometric properties of each measure. Using a between-subject design, a total of 824 undergraduate students from the subject pool of a large research university in the southwest of the US were randomly assigned to complete one of four measures (i.e., short cognitive ability [n = 204], long cognitive ability [n = 222], short non-cognitive [n = 190], or long non-cognitive [n = 208]). Participants completed the measures in a first session and external correlates in a second session. It was hypothesized that the short non-cognitive measure would have less careless responding, higher reliability, and higher construct-related validity than the longer non-cognitive measure. The examinations of the effect of measure length on cognitive ability test scores, reliability, and construct-related validity were all framed as research questions due to conflicting evidence in the literature. Pertaining to test scores, measure length had no effect on performance on cognitive measures but an inconsistent effect on caress responding on non-cognitive measures. Pertaining to psychometric properties, measure length had no practically meaningful effect on the reliability of both the cognitive and non-cognitive measures. In terms of validity, the effect of measure length depended on the criterion used but on average, this effect was small to negligible. Overall, the results of the present study provide little evidence to support researchers��� concerns about the potential adverse effects associated with using longer cognitive or non-cognitive measures

Impact of Sea-Level Rise and Storm Surges on Florida Key Deer Using Lidar and Multispectral Remote Sensing
Due to the low elevation of the Florida Keys and their flat terrain, the existence of wildlife species residing on the islands in the lower Florida Keys is constantly threatened by strong storms and rising sea levels. Numerous wildlife species, including Florida Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium), call the lower Florida Keys home and are found nowhere else. The unique topographic characteristics of this island chain pose challenges to the wildlife species living there, from flooding due to storm surges to the reduction of available habitat area and freshwater caused by rising seawater. This dissertation���s overall objective was to determine the impact of tropical storms and relative sea-level rise on vegetation and Florida Key deer habitats using lidar and multispectral remote sensing.
First, in creating vegetation maps to characterize Florida Key deer habitats on No Name Key, I used 2 different input data sources. I also employed multiple-input data, 2 classification algorithms, and various classification settings. Additionally, I employed a range of post-classification processing techniques to determine which combination of the input data, classification, and post-classification techniques resulted in the most accurate vegetation map. Second, using the algorithm/input data combinations resulted in a higher classification accuracy, I then created a vegetation map of pre- and post-Hurricane Irma and performed a thematic change detection. Using the area change information obtained from the change detection, I estimated the number of deer supported by the storm-affected habitat. The estimated number of deer using the change detection analysis was within a 95% confidence interval of the post-Hurricane Irma deer population field survey. Third, using a lidar-derived digital-elevation model, I applied NOAA���s 5 sea-level-rise scenarios and determined the area above the water level at each scenario. Finally, I calculated the number of deer supported under each of the scenarios.
Given the increasing frequency of strong storms and accelerated rate of sea-level rise, the use of lidar and optical remote sensing could be used to assess the impact of the storm surges and the future predicted relative sea-level rise on the vegetation and the wildlife habitat, which could lead to more effective and accurate wildlife management
