The Impact of Public Housing on Children's Academic Outcomes

    Get PDF
Best intentions notwithstanding, public housing has long been criticized for placing children in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty. Yet, much of the existing evidence focuses on children who exit public housing located in undesirable neighborhoods. We examine children who enter New York City public housing, located across a wide array of neighborhoods, and find positive effects of moving into public housing on test scores. Effects are larger among those moving from lower-income neighborhoods due, perhaps, to increases in neighborhood and school quality

At $445 billion worth of goods and services, Texas was the largest exporter of all the U.S. states in 2023. Exports also made up 23% of Texas GDP the same year. This issue of PERCspectives on Policy compares the dollar value of exports for the top U.S. states, and takes a more comprehensive look at Texas' largest exporting industries

The Effect of Working Memory Load on the Ability to Increase and Sustain Positive Emotion: An Event-Related Potential Study

    Get PDF
Positive emotion upregulation plays an important role in promoting an individuals overall well-being, though it has been understudied to-date, particularly in terms of the factors that may modulate its success. Prior work has shown that participants can use reappraisal and savoring to increase subjective and electrocortical response to pictures in the lab. However, individuals ability to regulate emotions in the real-world is likely less effective than in a controlled laboratory environment. In the real-world, cognitive demands, such working memory load, are higher and may negatively impact emotion regulation ability. Here, we tested whether working memory load would compromise the effect of reappraisal and savoring on the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential that is larger for emotional compared to neutral pictures, and can be used to measure the effects of emotion regulation. Seventy-six participants, (44 females; 31 males; 1 non-binary; M age = 18.86 years; SD = 1.21), performed an emotion regulation task interspersed with high-load (six-letter) and low-load (two-letter) working memory trials. Participants used savoring or reappraisal to upregulate positive emotion experienced in response to positive pictures and at the end of each trial, participants were asked to recall the letters that had been presented at the beginning of the trial. EEG and working memory performance were recorded. Results showed that both savoring and reappraisal increased the LPP elicited by positive pictures. Moreover, we found no evidence that working memory load compromised the effects of savoring or reappraisal on the LPP. Therefore, both reappraisal and savoring increase the electrocortical processing of pictures and are robust to the effects of concurrent working memory load, suggesting that they may translate well to the real-world, where ongoing demands may be more onerous than in controlled lab settings
