DfT architecture for 3D-SICs with multiple towers
[[abstract]]Three-dimensional stacked ICs (3D-SICs) based on Through-Silicon Vias (TSVs) provide attractive benefits such as smaller form factor, higher performance, and lower power. So far, prior work on Design-for-Testability (DfT) only focused on 3D-SICs consisting of a single "tower", i.e., a 3D-SIC in which each stack level contains exactly one die. 3D stacking technology allows to place multiple dies on top of a common base die, resulting in 3D-SICs with multiple "towers". This paper presents a generic DfT architecture for 3D-SICs having any number of "towers", possibly including "sub-towers". We also present efficient test control mechanisms. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture has a negligible area cost for medium-sized and larger industrial designs, and therefore provides a cost-effective test solution for 3D-SICs.[[fileno]]2030108030218[[department]]電機工程學
Optical Propulsion and Manipulation of Micro-particles by Integrated Photonics
[[abstract]]In this paper, we present the design and fabrication of directional couplers and multi-mode interferometers (MMI) for realizing micro-particle optical propulsion and manipulation. The evanescent field of waveguide directional couplers and MMI is able to drive a particle to flow and control the position of particle, according to the optical mode field distributed inside the devices. By launching a TM-polarized laser with a wavelength of 1550μm, the particles can be propelled with velocities as high as 5.3μm/s and 4.5μm/s for directional couplers and MMI, respectively, at the input power level of 50 mW.[[fileno]]2030180030037[[department]]電機工程學

DVD pickup head based optical resolution photoacoustic microscopy
[[abstract]]Optical resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) has been shown as a promising tool for label-free microvascular and single-cell imaging in clinical and bioscientific applications. However, most OR-PAM systems are realized by using a bulky laser for photoacoustic excitation. The large volume and high price of the laser may restrain the popularity of OR-PAM. In this study, we develop a low-cost and compact OR-PAM system based on a commercially available DVD pickup head. We showed that the DVD pickup head have the required laser energy and focusing optics for OR-PAM. The firmware of a DVD burner was modified to enable its laser diode to provide a 13-ns laser pulse with 1.3-nJ energy at 650 nm. Two excitation wavelengths at 650 and 780 nm were available. The laser beam was focused onto the target after passing through a 0.6-mm thick DVD transparent polycarbonate coating, and then aligned to be confocal with a 50-MHz focused ultrasonic transducer in forward mode. To keep the target on focus, a scan involving auto-tracking procedure was performed. The lateral resolution was verified via cross-sectional imaging of a 6-mu m carbon fiber. The measured -6 dB width of the carbon fiber was 6.66 mu m which was in agreement with optical diffraction limit. The proposed OR-PAM has potential as an economically viable and compact blood screening tool available outside of large laboratories due to its low cost and portability. Ultrasonic Nakagami visualization of HIFU-induced thermal lesions
[[abstract]]Using high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to locally perform thermal ablation has shown its potential in auxiliary excision surgery, especially in thermal ablation of tumor. However, it is challenging for clinical physicians to locate the region being under HIFU thermal ablation and determine the applied ablation level only by conventional ultrasound B-mode images, causing dangers in therapy. In this study, we propose an ultrasonic Nakagami imaging technique to monitor HIFU thermal ablation in real time. It has been demonstrated that ultrasonic Nakagami imaging is capable of characterizing tissues with different scatterer concentration and distribution. Because in histological sections with and without HIFU thermal ablation, there are differences in scatterer concentration and distribution, we hypothesize that Nakagami parameters of tissues being HIFU thermal ablated will change, accordingly, thus potentially enabling Nakagami visualization of HIFU-induced thermal lesions. Ex vivo thermal ablation experiments of porcine livers were conducted to demonstrate our idea. Experiment results showed that Nakagami images could reveal the HIFU-induced thermal lesion, which was difficult to be located in conventional B-mode images because of no appearance of bubbles. Moreover, in the cases with apparent bubble formation, both of B-mode images and Nakagami images could locate the position of the thermal ablation area, while Nakagami images owned higher contrast. In summary, we experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of monitoring HIFU thermal ablation by Nakagami imaging. The contrast of the ablated regions between the Nakagam images before and after thermal ablation outperform that of B-mode images. Because the complexity of the Nakagami imaging algorithm is low, it can be easily integrated as part of post processing in current array systems indicating that real-time visualization of HIFU thermal lesion with Nakagami imaging is possible.[[fileno]]2030143030065[[department]]電機工程學
Single-frame-based rain removal via image decomposition
[[abstract]]Rain removal from a video is a challenging problem and has been recently investigated extensively. Nevertheless, the problem of rain removal from a single image has been rarely studied in the literature, where no temporal information among successive images can be exploited, making it more challenging. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we are among the first to propose a single-frame-based rain removal framework via properly formulating rain removal as an image decomposition problem based on morphological component analysis (MCA). Instead of directly applying conventional image decomposition technique, we first decompose an image into the low-frequency and high frequency parts using a bilateral filter. The high-frequency part is then decomposed into "rain component" and "non rain component" via performing dictionary learning and sparse coding. As a result, the rain component can be successfully removed from the image while preserving most original image details. A hybrid sender/receiver-driven error protection scheme for reliable P2P scalable video streaming.
[[abstract]]This paper proposes a hybrid sender/receiver-driven error protection scheme to transmit scalable video packets over packet-lossy peer-to-peer networks. In our scheme, given an estimated system uplink capacity, a joint source-channel coding (JSCC) mechanism based on receiver-driven subscriptions is proposed to minimize the visual distortion received by child-peers by subscribing to appropriate amounts of source and channel coding packets. Because the bandwidth for inter-peer transmissions may fluctuate largely due to peer dynamics, in our method peers estimate the available system uplink capacity based on consensus propagation to avoid the fluctuating allocations of JSCC. To efficiently utilize the uplink bandwidth of peers, parent-peers use sender-driven contribution-guided peer selection to reject the low-contribution subscriptions requested from candidate child-peers.
