Evaluating the Accuracy of Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Satellite Measurements for River Water Surface Elevation Anomalies
This study was conducted to test the accuracy and water surface elevation anomalies of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite remote sensing measurements to USGS gauges located across four rivers, the Olentangy, Ohio, Maumee, and Muskingum from August 2023 to August 2024. To compare these anomalies, a Jupyter Lab notebook was created to gather the data from four different SWOT reaches, and USGS gauges to create a table of water surface elevation time series. Before the SWOT data can be plotted together, a filter is needed to distinguish the bad-quality data from the good-quality data the satellite may have collected. Two plots were created for each river, filtered SWOT data with USGS gauge data and unfiltered SWOT data with USGS gauge data. Unfiltered is all the data that the SWOT time series outputs. After filtering the SWOT data, it is plotted with the USGS gauge data (after subtracting their initial values). All data from the Olentangy and Muskingum rivers was filtered out and deemed unsuitable for analysis. The Ohio River had an RMSE (root square mean error) value of 0.27 m and the Maumee River had an RMSE of 1.36 m. The RMSE pertains to the typical differences between the gauge and SWOT data. In conclusion, all river data undergoes filtering, but only a subset meets the necessary quality standards. From the available filtered data, the results exceed the scientific requirements.No embarg
Preliminary Study: Impacts of Meal Frequency on Equus Caballus Night Time Behavior
Given the opportunity, horses would naturally forage for 16-18 hours a day, rarely fasting voluntarily for more than 2-4 hours at a time (Harris, 2005). Today, horses are heavily managed in conditions far removed from their natural environment, which may impact their behavior and welfare (Thorne et al., 2005). The stressful conditions imposed by management routines are the most likely causal factor in the development of equine stereotypies (Sarrafchi and Blokhuis, 2013). The aim of this study is to explore how common management practices, specifically feeding frequency, impacts night time budgets and stereotypic behavior performed by horses. A larger study with twelve horses were split into 2 groups of 6 horses. After a two-week adaptation period, the 2 groups were then randomly allocated their meal frequency order (1x, 2x, or 3x per day) in a cross over design with each treatment lasting 7 days. For this pilot study, a subset of 3 horses that received all three treatments were selected. This study focused on night time-budgets between the hours of 0000 to 0700 and 1900 until 0000. Continuous observation was used to determine duration and frequency of each behavior. The chi-square test revealed a significant difference between the overall total time budgets of horses when fed once, twice or three times a day (p < 0.05). This internship gave me hands-on experience with animal care, showing me what life looks like for a full-time zookeeper. I worked 3 days a week doing tasks such as preparing animal diets, cleaning exhibits, learning how to interact with the public and more! Evaluating Visualizations Used in Communication of Life Cycle Assessment Results
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides insight into the environmental and human health impacts of processes and products like electric vehicles. However, the complexity of LCA results often leads to ineffective communication of key environmental impacts and hinders their interpretation, preventing non-expert audiences from making informed sustainability decisions. My study addresses these communication challenges by evaluating visualizations commonly employed in LCA results.
Using A/B testing through a Qualtrics survey, my study evaluates four common visualizations seen in LCA results: (1) stacked bar charts, (2) unstacked bar charts, (3) pie charts, and (4) Sankey diagrams. My survey collected responses from a total of 172 participants from Ohio State University and local Columbus communities, which I analyzed. My findings offer insights into the effectiveness of the visualizations and identify those that best bridge gaps in understanding between technical experts and general audiences. Based on these insights, I developed a set of recommendations to make complex LCA results more accessible and support informed decision-making.
