Computational Modeling of Ion Channel Clustering in Cardiac Cellular Membrane

    Get PDF
Ion channels are found to group into clusters in the plasma membrane of cardiac myocytes. However, the mechanisms behind clustering especially under disease conditions are not known. Studies indicate a strong link between altered ion channel expression and vascular diseases. Clustering behavior was analyzed in a computational model simulating ion channel insertion, removal, and diffusion. Thousands of simulations were ran varying parameters involved in clustering. Simulations were analyzed using averages, variances, histograms analyzing cluster distributions, and through visible clustering behaviors generated from the model. Parameters involved in clustering and the effects on clustering behaviors were compared. The study found that simple channel interactions are the most important for determining cluster properties in a cardiac membrane using a stochastic, self-assembly process. The model has implications for ion channel modeling under disease conditions. Additionally, the model could provide insight into how clustering behavior changes and provide novel techniques for therapies.Undergraduate Research ScholarshipNo embargoAcademic Major: Biomedical Engineerin

Analyzing Maintenance of Heritage Languages in Migration Context: Insights from Cantonese Heritage Language Users in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Despite the global decline of Sinitic varieties other than Mandarin, there is an absence of research on the heritage language maintenance on the user’s level. This study proposes the Heritage Language Attitude model to explore the dynamics of heritage language maintenance by analysing the experiences of 1.5- and second-generation Dutch Cantonese descendants. Through constructivist grounded theory, four dimensions emerged: Necessity, Perception of the World, Cultural Heritage, and Pragmatic Reasoning. These dimensions reveal how individual experiences intersect with broader cultural and societal factors, influencing language attitudes and intergenerational transmission outlook. The findings contribute towards a more inclusive and effective heritage preservation and heritage language policies. The study calls for community-driven research to address the needs of heritage communicative communities, urge rethinking heritage language maintenance in migration contexts, and offers an analytical framework to accomplish this

Auxinic Herbicide Damage Quantification and Mitigation

    No full text
In the U.S., the use of auxinic herbicides like 2,4-D and dicamba for weed control monoculture row crop systems continues to rise. The volatile nature of these chemicals and inappropriate application can lead to off-target drift, causing auxin transport misregulation and damage to broadleaf plants and woody species. Vitis vinifera (grape) is particularly vulnerable, as damage from auxinic herbicide drift can lead to stunted growth, yield loss, and vine death. The project aimed to develop methods to quantify herbicide residues on plant leaves, using novel technology developed by the Blakeslee Laboratory and QQQ LC-MS/MS analysis. Additionally, the project investigated potential pre-protectant substances that could be used to protect vineyards from herbicide drift damage. Experimentation involved growing grape cuttings hydroponically in a growth chamber and subjecting plants to simulated drift events, followed by developing methods to improve the efficiency of herbicide residue analysis using previously developed technology from the Blakeslee Lab.Ohio Grape Industries Committee (OGIC)A five-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Sustainable Plant System

STEP Category: Education AbroadI will be travelling to Ghana with a group of professors and students from the Department of Dance. This research abroad trip will take place for two weeks, from June 9th, 2024 – June 23rd, 2024. The group and I will be studying West African dance forms with the University of Ghana in Accra and go on field trips to nearby cities to explore more history about the region. When not in classes at the university, I will be conducting individual research focused on water quality and sustainability in the surrounding areas. Since this is an immersive abroad project, I will be fully engaged for the two-week trip and conduct preliminary research before the trip to get the best experience possible. This trip is transformational for my education and life because I will be experiencing West African dance in Ghana, which is part of what I’m studying at the Dance Department at OSU. In addition, I will be able to use my knowledge and curiosity for the environment to explore the similarities and differences with regards to sustainability in Ghana vs. the US and bring that with me as I continue my studies in Ecological Engineering. The Ohio State University Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP)The Ohio State University Department of Dance Undergraduate Research FundThe Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences Research GrantAcademic Major: DanceAcademic Major: Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineerin

Sustain-a-Claims: Elevating Sustainable Marketing Strategies for amika

    Get PDF
Course Code: AEDECON 4567amika is a haircare brand committed to enhancing sustainability through clean ingredients, friend to all philosophy and refillable packaging program. In the fall of 2024, amika partnered with EEDS (Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainability) capstone students to enhance amika’s visibility and communication of sustainable efforts to their consumers. This project included three objectives: the development of a peer survey on sustainable marketing claims, an analysis of amika’s existing impact landing page, and an analysis of competitor brands’ social media, sustainability initiatives, and impact page designs. The peer survey provided valuable insight as to how students at The Ohio State University's Columbus campus interpret sustainability marketing claims, including which claims make consumers more likely to pay for a product. This study conducted a thorough review of competitor brands’ social media platforms and existing sustainability communications that revealed amika is an industry leading sustainability brand. Some suggestions were crafted based on other B-Corporation Certified impact pages and the feedback garnered from the peer survey. These insights will help amika restructure their marketing efforts to reach a wider Gen Z audience and ensure their Impact Landing Page effectively communicates sustainability initiatives. To better integrate sustainability into the brand’s marketing, amika should combine product sustainability claims with ingredient and product efficacy information to highlight sustainability alongside the functionality of products. Additionally, creating claim banners on the product website pages to frontload sustainability information to consumers could enhance awareness for consumers. These recommendations will lead amika into the next phase of its marketing strategy, ensuring that “Sustain-a-Claims” becomes a core aspect of the brand's connection to consumers.Academic Major: Environment, Economy, Development, and Sustainabilit
