    Seeking Zero: Development of a System-wide CLABSI Prevention Policy

    In a 17-hospital Midwest U.S. healthcare system, staff identified a significant increase in CLABSI rates across several facilities. An investigation was initiated to determine a potential root cause. A review of CLABSI-related policies was completed, and no comprehensive system- wide CLABSI prevention policy was found. Therefore, “In high-risk patients (P), how do system-wide best practices/strategies (I) compared to current practice (C) affect CLABSIs (O)?” was used for a systematic review of the literature to determine the best evidence-based practices for the creation of a system-wide CLABSI prevention policy. This initiative began in October 2024 and concluded in March 2025. The DNP Leader created a policy and plan for the incremental rollout and evaluated the rollout response. CLABSI prevention best practices were deployed to one unit within the system to test the implementation efficacy; it will then be deployed to the rest of the system.A one-year embargo was granted for this item

    Undergraduate First Place Poster AwardInfluenza remains a critical global threat, having an estimated 1 billion cases annually alongside up to 650,000 deaths (1). Influenza virus infection causes severe respiratory damage that can lead to acute lung injury, and in more severe cases, death. Ubiquitination is a post-translational modification that plays a crucial role in regulating protein activity, stability, and localization during viral infection. It is often utilized in the host innate immune response to fight off viral infection by destroying vital parts of the virus needed for survival and viral replication. E3 ubiquitin ligases are essential for the ubiquitin process by catalyzing the attachment of ubiquitin on targeted substrates. The MARCH (Membrane Associated Ring-CH) family of E3 ligases has been shown to regulate immune responses and viral replication in various viral infections, one being influenza virus. Our lab previously discovered that overexpression of MARCH10 in lung epithelial cells decreased influenza hemagglutinin (HA) when the cells were infected with influenza virus. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that MARCH10 directly targets influenza HA protein for degradation. To investigate the role of MARCH10 on influenza HA, we transiently co-transfected HEK293T cells with control or MARCH10 plasmid in varying doses with influenza HA. Our results indicated that influenza HA protein decreased with increasing amounts of MARCH10. Similarly, when HEK293T ectopically expressed MARCH10 and infected with PR8, influenza HA was found to have a decreased half-life when treated with the protein synthesis inhibitor, puromycin. Furthermore, when V5-tagged MARCH10, FLAG-tagged influenza HA, and HA-tagged ubiquitin were ectopically expressed in HEK293T cells and infected with PR8, MARCH10 was observed to polyubiquitinate influenza HA using a FLAG pulldown immunoassay blot.     Somatostatin-Expressing Stratum Oriens Interneurons form Biased Circuits with Deep and Superficial Pyramidal Cells in CA1 Hippocampus

    The hippocampus is involved in processing a diverse array of information that is transmitted to the rest of the brain. Recent work suggests that circuits between heterogenous populations of excitatory and inhibitory neurons endows the hippocampus with the ability to process such diverse information. Somatostatin-expressing interneurons are involved in regulating the flow of information through the hippocampus, but it is unknown how they integrate into circuits with diverse populations of CA1 pyramidal cells. Here, we use four transgenic mouse lines to assay the synaptic physiology between deep and superficial pyramidal cells and somatostatin-expressing stratum oriens interneurons. We show that superficial pyramidal cells have a higher connection probability than deep pyramidal cells to somatostatin-expressing and Nkx2.1+ stratum oriens interneurons, but not to 5HT3A+ or Chrna2+ cells. Reciprocally, superficial pyramidal cells are more strongly inhibited by somatostatin-expressing stratum oriens interneurons, but not by Chrna2+ oriens-lacunosum moleculare cells.     ‭Preservation for the People: Using History to Go Beyond Gentrification‬ ‭

    This thesis explores the intertwined processes of gentrification and historic preservation. These two forces were used to shape American urban landscapes but are often overlooked by many Americans. Although historic preservation is typically used to save architectural heritage or to help aid in the gentrification process , this work argues that it actually has potential to serve more inclusive purposes. By exploring the history of historic preservation and its relationship to gentrification, this thesis aims to make the case for separating the phenomenons to improve the role that historic preservation so that it can have a more profound impact on social and cultural dynamics of the urban landscape.     Physical Therapy Management of Dysmenorrhea-Associated Pelvic Pain in Adolescent and Young Adult Females: A Scoping Review

    Background: Dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain is common among young females and can negatively impact their quality of life. Objectives: To identify and synthesize interventions, outcomes, and gaps that fall within the physical therapy scope of practice for adolescent females with dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain. Study Design: Scoping Review Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane, Scopus, and PEDro databases were systematically searched through October 20, 2021. Inclusion criteria entailed the following: 1) written in English, 2) published between 2001-2021, 3) peer-reviewed, 4) investigated a physical therapeutic intervention, and 5) mean age of study participants between 13-24 years. Results: The combined search yielded 16,000 articles, of which 58 articles were ultimately included. Physical therapy interventions studied in the identified articles included: cardiovascular-based exercise, dry needling, integrative health approaches, isometric exercises, kinesio-taping, manual therapy/massage, multi-modal intervention programs, strengthening, stretching, thermotherapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Stretching, integrative health approaches, cardiovascular-based exercise, and a combination of modalities were the most studied interventions for dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain. A synthesis of the included studies indicated there were statistically and clinically significant results supporting all the interventions studied. However, there were limited studies directly comparing intervention types to one another. Conclusion: Various physical therapy interventions may be effective in decreasing dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain and improving the quality of life among young females. Additional research on interventions for dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain in young females is warranted to elucidate prioritization and matching of best physical therapy treatment interventions for adolescents and young adults with dysmenorrhea-related pelvic pain.Publisher does not allow open access until after publicatio

    Interview of Charlotte Remenyik by Raimund Goerler

    Interview conducted at The Ohio State University Archives, Columbus, Ohio.Charlotte Remenyik describes her career at the University as the Varsity fencing coach. Remenyik grew up in Hungary and first learned to fence as a child, and she eventually became skilled enough to compete in junior world championship competitions. During the Hungarian uprising in 1956, Remenyik and family members were able to escape, and they settled in Chicago. Rememyik started coaching part-time at Northwestern University for the intramurals department and was so successful that Ohio State recruited her. She started at the University in 1978, coaching just the women. In 1980 the men's coach left Ohio State, so Remenyik began coaching both teams. She continued to coach in this role until she left Ohio State in 1999. Remenyik discusses, among other things, the effect of Title IX on support for Ohio State's women's athletics program, her then-novel recruiting efforts abroad, stand-out players, a race discrimination lawsuit involving the team, her involvement in the NCAA, and her style of coaching and how it changed over time

    Philanthropic Inequality in Public Media

    Economic inequality has been growing in the United States since the early 1970s. Because economic inequality has negative consequences for society, some are eager to take steps to reduce it. One proposed solution is philanthropic giving. However, there is currently little research testing economic inequality's relationship with philanthropy. To examine this relationship, we draw the case of a large nonprofit public media organization. We find that as economic inequality has grown, donations to this organization have become increasingly concentrated within a smaller number of donors. The positive correlation between economic inequality and philanthropy undermines the assertion that philanthropy may reduce economic inequality.     AN INITIAL CAUSAL LOOP DIAGRAM OF TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS FOR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

    This study presents an adoption model of electrified transportation for residents of underserved communities in the Columbus Metropolitan Area (CMA). The diagram, which is based on a casual loop diagram, considers the evolution of stocks of personal vehicles – including internal combustion and electric – and public transportation buses – including compressed natural gas and electric –and includes important financial, social, cultural, equity, and access variables. The model will be parameterized with information from surveys, focus groups, and interviews conducted in fifteen underserved communities in the CMA. With the understanding afforded by this model, a life cycle inventory will be integrated to understand the broader environmental implications of the transition to electric mobility to serve these communities.
