    How the Overturning of Chevron Affected Government Agencies

    This thesis looks at how the Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo changed the legal system by ending the Chevron doctrine. This shift gave more power to federal courts and took power away from government agencies when it comes to interpreting unclear laws. Using a dataset of 173 federal court cases decided before and after the ruling, the study finds that agency win rates increased by 8.5% after Loper Bright. This was surprising, since many expected agencies to lose more often. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) was originally the main focus of this project. However after my research I learned it was not strongly affected, since most of the legal cases it faces are based on the Constitution rather than how it interprets laws. The Department of Justice’s Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), had the most cases in the dataset, with 45 in total and saw its win rate increase by 14.6%. These results show that even though courts now have more control, they still agree with agency decisions in many cases. Still, the end of Chevron may lead to less consistent rulings, more variation between judges, and less reliance on expert agencies. This could affect complex areas like immigration, labor, and environmental policy.     Exploration of Sleep Deprivation in Mouse Model Using an Effort-Based Discounting Task

    The necessity of getting adequate and consistent sleep for health is well recognized. However, many individuals fail to achieve this. Studies indicate a growing prevalence of sleep deprivation, causing it to become one of the leading reasons for visiting sleep clinics. While much of the existing literature focuses on cognitive outcomes like attention and memory, there is a notable gap in understanding how sleep deprivation affects motivation, particularly from the perspective of effort expenditure. To address this gap, we investigated the impact of gentle handling sleep deprivation on performance on the Effort Discounting Task (EDT). This is a behavioral test used to assess motivation through effort expenditure. Two experimental groups of 8 male and 8 female C57BL/6 mice each (total n=32) were tested on this task. We hypothesized that sleep- deprived mice would show reduced effort expenditure and hence decreased motivation. Contrary to our hypothesis, mice showed increased motivation after sleep deprivation. Additional experimentation yielded an effect of behavioral testing time on task performance.     Interview of Deborah Stokes-Wayne by McKenna Dunn and Daisy Roberts

    Remote interview.Deborah Stokes-Wayne discusses her time at Ohio State as a student from 1965 to 1969, particularly her membership in the Black Student Union (BSU). This interview was one of 15 conducted by students in English 4567 (Rhetoric and Community Service) to capture as many stories as possible from former Ohio State students associated with the 1968 sit-in at the Administration Building (now Bricker Hall) that led to the arrests of 34 Black students, now known as the “OSU 34.” Stokes-Wayne was not a member of the "OSU 34,” but she discusses some of the outcomes of the incident. In particular, she discusses her role in the changes the university made in meeting the BSU’s demands regarding academic offerings for Black students. She describes her role in the university hiring her father, a professor who taught courses on Black history, to teach the subject at Ohio State. She also discusses her involvement in the development of the Department of Black Studies, now known as African-American and African Studies.     Improving Nutrition for Patients with Severe Burns Utilizing a Nurse-Driven Volume-Based Enteral Feeding Protocol

    Proper nutrition is critical in all phases of healing burn wounds. The importance of nutritional support in severely burned patients is well documented, but the provision of adequate nutrition to this population is frequently suboptimal. Enteral nutrition helps to meet these nutritional goals. A nurse-driven volume-based feeding (VBF) approach focuses on the goal volume a burn patient receives in a 24-hour period. This initiative’s objective is to utilize a nurse-driven protocol to optimize the nutritional intake the severely burned patient receives. The purpose of the quality initiative was to improve successful utilization of VBF for hospitalized burn patients who require EN. Secondary objectives were to evaluate adoption and fidelity to the protocol. To meet these objectives, an electronic VBF protocol was activated within the EMR in a surgical intensive care unit for severely injured burn patients. Nursing staff were educated on the protocol and key components for reaching 80% of target nutritional values. Protocol adoption and fidelity were tracked among eligible patients for 10 weeks. Among the six severely burned patients admitted during the observation period; findings indicate a high utilization of the VBF protocol. This included 100% for ordering, 100% for documentation of required components, and 100% of patients meeting nutritional goals of 80%. Implementation of an electronic VBF protocol increased the number of patients who received target nutritional goals. Use of a standardized protocol, combined with education, auditing, and ongoing evaluation may be an effective method to align current practices with evidence-based recommendations.A three-year embargo was granted for this item

    Transitions Of Care Nurse Effect on No-Show Clinic Rates: A Quality Improvement Project for Stroke Survivors

    Background: Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability in the United States (US). In the US, stroke systems of care (coordination of care from pre-hospital assessment to post-acute care for stroke) over the last 15 years have witnessed an increase in stroke treatment rates, resulting in stroke dropping from the third leading cause of death to the fifth in the US. Problem: Despite improvements in acute care treatments, stroke survivors have a higher incidence of hospital readmission, recurrent stroke rates, and an increase in morbidity and mortality when they do not complete post-discharge clinic visits with a neurologist. Intervention/Methods: This evidence-based quality improvement project involves the implementation of the transitions of care nurse (TCN) role in improving clinic appointments scheduled before discharge for stroke patients and decreasing clinic no-show rates. Pre- and post-implementation data were collected, including the percentage of patients discharged to home with a follow-up appointment scheduled before discharge and the missed appointment rate. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize and display the data. Outcomes: This project demonstrated that the TCN role increased the number of appointments scheduled before discharge and decreased clinic no-show rates. Conclusion: Implementing a TCN for stroke allowed the host organization to ensure that many patients' follow-up appointments were made before discharge and decreased clinic no-show rates.No embarg

    An Analysis of Hybrid/Remote Work Eligibility in Academic Librarian Job Advertisements

    This paper seeks to capture changing policies and approaches to hybrid and remote work in academic libraries following the COVID-19 pandemic. For this study, job advertisements were gathered and those hiring managers surveyed. Results show hybrid/remote positions have competitive salaries, many types of academic library positions have hybrid eligibility, and campus and library policies regarding hybrid/remote work and their inclusion in job postings continue to evolve. Despite the potential recruitment benefits of these flexible work arrangements, many who offer them are not including this information in their job advertisements; therefore, job candidates should ask or negotiate for this benefit.Publisher allows immediate open acces

    Mechanism for cardiomyopathy and cardiac arrhythmia associated with a novel human titin variant

    A 62-year-old male presented with ventricular arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy and family history of cardiomyopathy, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Whole exome sequencing of proband and affected and unaffected family members revealed a novel five- nucleotide insertion in exon 193 of the titin (TTN) gene introducing a premature stop codon. TTN is a sarcomeric protein spanning the length of the sarcomere acting as passive tensioner in contraction dynamics. Previous studies have identified TTN variants resulting in expression of truncated titin (TTNtv), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), heart failure (HF), contractile dysfunction, and/or increased risks of ventricular arrythmias [1], [2]. To investigate the pathogenicity of this variant, the same insertion was introduced in the analogous locus in the mouse TTN gene (TTHtv-KI). TTNtv-KI heterozygous crosses yielded no homozygous offspring, suggesting embryonic lethality. Adult (>2mo) TTNtv-KI heterozygous (TTN+/-) and wild type (WT) mice were evaluated at baseline (no interventions) and subjected to a transaortic constriction (TAC) procedure to observe the impact of the heterozygous mutation on the cardiac remodeling response to chronic pressure overload. Animals were for cardiac function in vivo using echocardiograph (ECHO) and surface electrocardiograms (ECG). In vitro isolated ventricular myocytes were immunostained for titin at the C-terminus and N-terminus. Our findings showed compelling evidence that a novel TTN truncating mutation leads to functional cardiac impairment, altered electrophysiological responses, and structural changes in myocytes, contributing to a growing body of literature on the role of TTN in cardiac disease and highlight the importance of early functional assessments in understanding the impact of TTN mutations on heart disease.JB Cardiovascular Undergraduate Fellowship ProgramA three-year embargo was granted for this item.Academic Major: Biomedical Engineerin

    Beyond the B: Examining B Corp Certification's Depth and Breadth

    This research investigates the role of B Corp certification in shaping and supporting sustainability signaling. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks are becoming increasingly central to market self-regulation. Systems like B Corp, covering more than 9,000 firms, offer structured, voluntary methods for evaluating business impact. However, concerns remain about the reliability of scoring systems and the extent to which the information they generate meaningfully reaches consumers and other stakeholders. This research draws from public policy, business ethics, and data analysis to conduct a dual inquiry into the internal consistency of B Corp’s metrics and the external flow of its sustainability messaging by focusing on the cohort of certified firms. Methodologically, the inquiry combines quantitative analysis and exploration of B Lab’s self-published B Impact score data with qualitative content analysis of firm-level communications. The latter employs a micro-meso-macro framework to examine how B Corp information is presented by twenty leading firms across distinct communication levels: product packaging, firm websites and CSR reports, and B Lab’s member directory.
